Complaints would be ever worse because we wouldn't have the Heil Ricki brigade.

I call Godwin's Law on the above quote.

Erm, yes? We need to take 23 players to the World Cup, and it would be kind of useful to see some of the marginal players get given a run against quality international opposition.

I would have liked Haynes given a run in place of El Bertos as well as Wood be given more time . . . The wee Mac and Fallon combo is looking very good yet again and Smith looks to be much comfortable the backs. It would be great to start them for some of the warm-up matches. The potential and skill is there but we need to see them up against fresh players. . . .

Yeah!....fair point Deloras.

I guess there are two sides to this discussion.

1, Should the Phoenix guys got more of a rest.  The arguement for that depends which camp you sit in.....

2, The stated purpose of these friendlies is to give the team matches so they can get some sort of team work together...no problem with that. The other aim...which Rickie mentioned was to see how fringe players performed in a high pressure atmosphere. The idea being that the WC squad still had 5 or more places up for grabs.
So IMO it should have been Haynes and OLd off the bench....we already know about Fallon, McG, Wood and Barron. We got hammered down the flanks in the Con cup...we got hammered again against Mexico. Do we know anything more about Old and Haynes after this game...NO.

Anyway I am not sweating over this. Ricki was wearing his national coach hat...so he calls it as he sees it.

Not so sure about that.

I just mean we wouldn't be discussing whether Ricki should have let the Jets match influence his decision-making in regard to the All Whites. I don't think he should have and he clearly didn't. Good for him.

If the national coach was anyone else we would just have to accept that all this is part of having international footballers in your team, which is generally a good thing.

I don't have an opinion on any of his decsions solely in the context of the game. I'm not as a good a coach as him.

Like I said, it's common practice for national coaches and club managers to reach a gentleman's agreement in these type of games, precisely because clubs and fans don't exactly simply 'accept' the situation.

But I guess Ricky is in a somewhat unique position, and he was probably gonna be in for it regardless of what he did.

I feel like that most of the time, but you don't see me crying to the Press about it.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Not sure the Press would pay much attention if you did

I've noticed that it isn't a "quote" per see, so News Talk might be just exaggerating what our boy Leo said ya know.

How do you know? I might be the Frankin County News' go-to guy when they need a quote about being tired and stuff.....

They could do "scientific studies" when they ask you about things and then ask if they make you tired.  Then they could form policy on it.

Tell them that alcohol makes you "un-tired", that way they might cut taxes on it a bit aye

Ask him how he feels on Sunday at 4pm, waiting in the players tunnel with 35,000 people in the stands going bananas:

"I feel like I just took a bag load of E's mate. I'm off my f**king tits. I'm high as a kite. I feel ten f**king feet tall. Newcastle Jets? I just played against Mexico! I am a f**king Lord. Let's all have a discoooooooo...."

It's not the 1st time that Leo's complained about being tired. Maybe he should start getting to bed earlier.

"...I've been feeling pretty tired of late"..., from 26th of December.

Too true!! Come 4pm the boys will be buzzing and will step up to the game. Hopefully they can keep that enthusiasm right till the final whistle!!

I am wondering if Ricki didnt have the confidence in those 2 players to put them on in that match.
He is really pleased that it was 2 nil, and I reckon it would have been going through his mind to hang in there with the men on the park who were doing the job ok, and get the team and himself a good result (yes, even though it was a loss). Better for him a 2 nil than a 4 nil in trying a few lads out

Let's remember, he isnt a big sub man, so to make 4 already was out of character

They HAVE to release the players whether they like it or not.

Can't see him playing 90 in any case since Adrian is supposedly back and Daniel prob on the bench.

More worried about Brown as his game is based around his fitness and the amount of k's he racks up in a game. Siggy will be fine, just wave a red rag in front of him before kick off.
Lochhead - who knows? Manny might be required to go back there again if he faulters

For playing Leo, Siggy and Locky for the full 90 minutes and Browny for 80 mins against Mexico. Despite negotiating to use 6 replacements he chose to leave most of the phoenix boys on the park for the whole gig...only used two replacements.

This in a friendly....a game played less than 72 hours before the biggest game in the Nix's history...a finals match in front of a sellout 34,000 home crowd.

Oh do behave, also can we stop threads which start off with someone addressing someone as "Mr"? This is a footy forum we are not writing to the Gas Board.

For some reason I always imagine the poster to be pompous, nerdy or an arse. I'll call Riki "Mr Herbert" so it will show him and others how upset I am. Like Mr Herbert gives a sh*t?

Dunno why, completely irrational, but bugger it irritates me.

Now if you had called him Mr Riki - different see, you've introduced a comedy element and that it acceptable.

The lord's day. Which one?

Well it can't be Paston because he's still out.  it can't be Horus because we're all PAXED out.

It must be Greenacre!  Winning goal or a stunning hattrick?  Either will do.

Great stuff Ricki!! Thanks for all you've done for football in NZ in last few years. You deserve massive thanks and some critics (myself included) can now eat humble pie til the cows come home...

Okay, the Phoenix weren't their most energised ever, but then neither were we (all split up over the stadium, struggling to get a chant going that wasn't "Wellington is wonderful". To any detractors, there's one stat that matters at the end of the day - 3-1!
