the report might take a while.

they have to write it out by hand, then strap it to a leg of a pigeon which then has to fly 20 miles.

i say go to bed, then hopefully in the morning, the pigeon will arrive.

Starting line Up

Paston
Muscat, Durante, McKain, Lochhead
Lia, Brown, Ferrante, Bertos
Greenacre, Costas

Subs: Hearfield, Mulligan, Sigmund, Crowther

First Half we had most of the possession but they had better chances.

Second half was more even, but we had plenty of corners and Brown should have at least got 2 headers on target..

The defence was pretty solid but Lia and Muscat didn't work well together and most of their attacks were down that side.

Ferrante looks like being a squad player again and Brown will be suspended at least once this season. A yellow today, but only 'cos it was a friendly
Costas and Greenacre both work hard but we could do with some height up front (Ifill?)

The most positive thing was hown ineffectual Kwasnik was. Anonymous until the 92nd minute when he had a one-on-one with Paston, which he blew

It's cold here!

Mariners complete undefeated pre-season
Saturday, 25 July 2009
by Glen Lauder

The Central Coast Mariners will go into the opening match of the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season with plenty of confidence, after finishing their pre-season undefeated, with a scoreless draw against Wellington Phoenix at Apex Oval in Dubbo.

Adam Kwasnik had the chance to secure what would have been a deserved victory against his former club with almost the last kick of the game, but regardless, Dubbo was treated to a football spectacle.

Tim Brown had the first chance of the match as the Phoenix went looking for an early goal, but after he headed over, the momentum swung quickly in the Mariners favour.

Brad Porter made a good run down the right wing before seeing his dangerous delivery cleared, while Pedj Bojic had a chance to repeat his free-kick heroics, which have dominated his pre-season.

But, after stepping up 30 yards out, Bojic sent his dead ball effort wide of the far post.

Trialist Michael McGlinchey was the next to create an opening, feeding Dean Heffernan in the left channel, Heffernan taking the ball to the byline, before having his cross cut out.

The Mariners best chance of the opening 45 minutes came just before the half hour mark, Adam Kwasnik playing a great ball through to Dylan Macallister, who showed plenty of strength to turn his marker, but was unlucky to see his volley shave the crossbar.

Porter also went close to giving the yellow and navy a deserved lead, but a low effort was brilliantly saved by a diving Mark Paston.

Porter was causing plenty of headaches for the Phoenix, Paston punching clear under heavy pressure, before the Kanwal junior forced a corner soon after.

And, with the half drawing to a close, Central Coast had one last chance to head into the sheds with the ascendency, Kwasnik again putting Macallister through, Andrew Durante blocking the former Lyn Oslo and SC Brann strikers run to ensure honours remained even.

Macallister was just millimetres from finding the back of the net soon after the restart, but his outstretched boot just couldnt connect with a Kwasnik through ball.

Vince Lia shot straight at Danny Vukovic in a rare Wellington attack, while Andrew Durante headed a Leo Bertos free kick over the bar.

Chris Doig had a goalbound header well saved by Paston down low, and it appeared it was only a matter of time before the Mariners were on the scoresheet.

Tim Brown headed wide after finding himself free on the penalty spot, and twice late on the Mariners were denied in one-on-one situations.

First Michael McGlinchey forced Mark Paston well out of his box, amid calls for handball, while Kwasnik perhaps should have finished the game off deep into inujury time, but Paston was once again brilliant in denying the yellow and navy, a scoreless draw confirmed.

The Mariners Hyundai A-League 2009/10 campaign kicks off on Thursday, 6 August when they take on Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium. Kick-off is at 8pm.

The Mariners first home match of the Hyundai A-League season is against local rival Newcastle Jets on Friday, August 14. Tickets are available online at www.ticketek.com.au or by phoning

Sounds like we had almost a full strength team and we got dominated..worrying sign, honestly, considering CCM didn't have a full strength team either. No Simon.

CCM is the type of team we need to beat (home and away) to have a chance of making the 6. At least we didn't get beat - sounds like Paston is in form which is good.

After watching their ACL campaign...They were shocking. If we don't beat the likes of NQF, Newcastle and CCM consistantly then we are no chance of making the 6. Simple as. I guess a draw away in regular season would be nothing to sneeze at though, depending on other results obviously.

Good to hear Paston went well.
We weren't a full strength team imo. No Diego or Daniel or more importantly - no Rojas. haha
But whats up with the no subs. we definitely were not full strength tonight. Don't kid yourself

we didn't have new signing Ifill, Daniel , or Diego, our most creative players bar bertos playing.

not thinking too much into it as it was just a hit out and Herbert said that it was going to be. I mean we didn't use any subs so shows Herbert wanted to give these players a chance to work together so when they come of the bench they will gel etc...

CCM will have a sh*t season probably willing to put money on it.

In previous years great pre season = peak too early.

very glad to hear of Paston playing well

A draw away to CCM preseason is not a disaster. That official match report was definitely one sided towards CCM. The game was good in that they could see how Lia went in mid plus Costa got  a full game and Greenacre also 90 minutes.

Ricki said they were not going to show their hand in this game...0-0 is OK
Probably missing some Diago/Daniel creativity and we will better with Ifill up front.

Yeah, fair enough. I guess it isn't so bad. Didn't have Disco Troy either, who I thought was our best player against the Chinese team. valeo2009-07-25 23:20:29

If you don't have enough fit players you name someone crook on the bench.  It's not like they have a squad of 23 over there.

Took the kids to a nix team signing session @ Westfield earlier this year.  By all the giggling and fluttering eyelids from the young teenage gels there you'd have to say that the team was plenty 'fit'.

Not worried at all - a few from Sigmund, Troy, Diego, Daniel and Ifill to come in.

Good to hear Paston in form.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)
