We will need to be at our best if we are to compete against Melbourne on Wednesday. If not, then we could get done, as Victory tore Roar apart in the second half.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

I think that 3 CB's could work against a team that showed today they are incapable of playing with width (subbing off their 2 wide players after a shocking first half and then playing everything through the middle)

In the past when we've played well against Melbourne we've had Timmy/Manny/Lia shutting the likes of Hernandez down though

Think that North could do a job at right back as well - has played there for extended periods when at Newcastle and for the Socceroos too.

i think 3 at the back would have beenmore crucial if Thompson and Kruse playing. We always get caught flat by melbourne with those guys running onto Hernandez passes. Not quite as dangerous without Thompson but i reckon playing dura as a quasi sweeper worth a go.

understood and those are reasonable concerns, but i dont think we will will the A-League playing the way we do - and I think our brand of football is very much of the long ball variety, last night was no different.
But that not my reason for shifting to 343 - that is bc we need to do something different away from home (Plus it would be a crime against morality to drop Siggie but play Troy).
I'd rather go to 352, which would tend to play as a 343 but with Pav/BMac up front with Greeny we'd get much more from Greenacre and have more options going forward
ignoring possible injury concerns

Siggy at left back? That's a very, um, leftfield suggestion.

Looks like Muscrat might be out for a month along with Herique who might be out for longer.

that'll help - plus if Nick Ward's temperament is sound he might fire it up and have another big performance

Hopefully Kosta and co can give these guys the runaround today so they are still feeling the effects on Wednesday.

Kosta and the roar didn't get the email about this.

Especially Kosta didn't! subbed in and then subbed off 50 mins later by Ange! stinks!

hmm we dont want too much change each week. Im still dissapointed that Ricki doesn't give someone like Daniel a chance to keep a place in the squad..

Should keep exact same squad but look at North in for hearfield .Then I believe both north and manny could play DM or RB?

But lets hope manny will be alrite after all the travel!

Think Lia will be Gutted his injury has come when it did. Made Ricki's job easy

Muscat, Henrique suffer setbacks
Sunday, 12 September 2010
by Bren O'Brien, Sportal

Kevin Muscat

Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar have suffered major injury setbacks in their match at AAMI Park, with Victory skipper Kevin Muscat out for a month with an ankle injury and Brisbane winger Henrique likely to miss even more with a suspected broken arm.

Melbourne may have won the game 3-0 to finally kick start their season, but they are set to be without Muscat until after the October international break, which includes the historic first all Melbourne derby on October 2.

The 37-year-old landed awkwardly in the 85th minute of the game and immediately fell to the ground clutching his right foot. He departed the field straight away leaving his side with just 10 men late in the game.

Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick said afterwards that while Victory would wait on tests, it appeared that Muscat had torn the lateral ligaments and would miss at least a month.

"The initial diagnosis is that he could have torn his ligaments in his ankle, so it could be at least a month," he said. "He's always a big miss, Kevin because of his presence on the field."

However, Merrick believes that while his experience will be missed, Melbourne have the ability to cover for Muscat positionally, saying Adrian Leijer can fill the breach at the back.

"The good thing about Adrian is that he can play full back or centre back. I don't think it is a problem for us," he said.

It was the second injury blow in as many days for Melbourne with Robbie Kruse unable to play on Sunday because of a calf injury which will also rule him out of Wednesday's home game against Wellington and Saturday's clash with Fury in Townsville.

Meanwhile, Brisbane are looking at being without in-form attacker Henrique for an even longer period after he lasted less than three minutes of Sunday's match. The slightly-built Brazilian cannoned into Muscat and landed awkwardly on his left arm.

He was very distressed and Brisbane wasted no time substituting him as he writhed in pain on the side of the pitch.

He was taken straight to hospital with the diagnosis likely to be either a broken arm or a dislocated elbow. Both scenarios would see him spend a substantial period on the sidelines.

"Ricky has had a fantastic start to the year and has been a big part of what we have been doing," coach Ange Postecoglou said. "It's not ideal to lose a player like him. It looks like it will be a long-term injury and we'll have to work out how we cover for that."

Brisbane otherwise emerged from the match unscathed, but having lost their first game of the season in such emphatic fashion must now back-up against ladder-leading Adelaide at Suncorp Stadium.

"Ive just re-visited this and once again realised that C-Diddy is a genius - a drunk, Newcastle bred disgrace - but a genius." - Hard News, 11:39am 4th June 2009

Henrique was tragic fall, after Musc**t flipped him up into the air.

Musc**t getting injured is pure karma, and well overdue IMO.

Muscat being out isn't good for us. Has been a liability all season. Leijer is a better CB.

Damn, I would have loved to see a siggy vs muscat conflict. About time that prick got injured though, he's dished enough out.

-e- I'd pick Vukovic to be between the sticks. More confident with catching crosses and high balls. Paston parries them too much, and victory have too many players who would fancy themselves with a snapshot just outside the box.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but the Nix currently stand on 99 goals scored in the A-League (not counting the defunct preseason cup).

Daniel got the first (vs Melbourne (h), game 1, season 1),
Greenacre got the 50th (vs Newcastle (a)  game 1, season 3)

Who will be number 100? Hope it comes early vs Victory on Wednesday night - I'll be there!!!

I think we'll be ok. The blogger seems to have missed/omitted that it's clearly a penalty-shootout, not a match situation. No keeper would simply parry a shot then walk away like that in a game.

We're not in danger of a shootout until we get to the playoffs.

Velaphi could have walked away from Dadi's shot, waved to the crowd, had a quick drink and/or a toss, wandered back in time to scoop up the ball.

if muscat is out for a month i seriously question whether he can come back at all. he's been so poor and off the pace this season, as though age has suddenly caught up with him.

Well, I haven't seen the replay so can go by only what I remember from seeing the game in the zone. But, we kept possession well in the first half (to the point when you heard people saying, just get it forward, was really a facepalm moment), threatened down the flanks (minus Hearfield's crossing learned straight from the Ahmad Elrich academy) and had no problems defensively (despite a couple of Vukovic's gaffes), largely in part because Manny played as a defensive screen so the backline wasn't overwhelmed the way it had been in the earlier games. Ward was very good, it's just such a nice shock to see a Phoenix central midfielder who demands and shows for the ball, and is not scared of it when it's at his feet and looks to get it as far away from him as quickly as possible. The added advantage of this formation is that it also allows Browny to make late forward runs without ridiculously exposing us on the counter, because Manny reads the counter-attack situations much better than Lia and is more effective in closing them down. And I feel we need to have Brown in there for his goal-scoring ability from midfield, because I don't think our central forwards will be very prolific.

Sure, it's not perfect - partly because we're not Barca or Chelsea, so we have the players we have, partly also because some of those players aren't even in their best form. But, this style of play worked for us last season, it worked for us last night as well, and I'd hate to see us abandon it until the day it proves to be absolutely disastrous for our results and performances. And the evidence so far has been the exact opposite.

Agree don't think we that far away and performance against Sydney was a big step forward.

Quality of delivery from wide needs to improve (and hard to see how it couldn't improve!) and with playing 4-3-3 would like to see Bertos and Ifill get a bit closer to support Greenacre when the ball is coming down the opposite wing.

Although Hearfields' crosses were a disgrace thought he played a number of quality long range balls in the first half.

If the whole Karma thing really did work I think Musc**t would be a living tied up on a chair in some psycho's basement, being abused day in day out by a bunch of KKK members while a bondage fan is having his way with him!
