A back three is potentially distaster. With most sides playing 4-3-3 this season, the wing-backs (which would include Lochhead, sorry mate) or wide midfielders would spend most of their time tracking the opposition's wide forwards and we'd be chucking long-balls up to D-Mac more that we are already.
It is the very reason why we were never going to win the Paraguay game at the world cup. They had us sussed down the middle and Bertos and Lochhead spent all their time in our half so we never had any width.
Besides, 4-2-3-1 has worked pretty well for us in the Boca, GCU, and CCM games. A big part of it being that Ifill works at his best running at the defence from wide positions (he is a great example of the modern winger).
