Almunia is more rubbish than the local refuse station.

He's a step up from Lehmann, albeit a baby step.

How long is McMaster's contract for? I can't see him getting any gametime now. Oh well, the further Crowther is down the goal-keeping food chain, the better IMO.

Jade North's replacement has now signed! Tromso IL have signed Stevan Bates.

Translated this for you off their official website. Very average translation.

"The stopper will contract out the year

TO was today an agreement with the Serbian defender Stevan Bates about a contract the year (12/31/2010)
Sports Director Morten Krmer was pleased to have a replacement for Jade North ready
- We are pleased to have signed Stevan of the year. The contract we have signed is the year, and only what we have agreed, according to Krmer
Hope to get Stevan ready to fight Haugesund
- We're working to get all the paperwork in place so that Stevan is ready for the away match against Haugesund. With the signing of Stevan we feel that the troops are now well equipped to the end of the Premier League, says Krmer"

Yeah Ricki said he was expecting him for the clash against Perth. So my guess is he arrives late this week and stays in Wellington for the weekend and begins training next week. I assume we are returning to Wellington before heading to Perth?

Na, don't need 6 keepers, just one good one like we had towards the end of last season, and we signed him yesterday.

A back three is potentially distaster. With most sides playing 4-3-3 this season, the wing-backs (which would include Lochhead, sorry mate) or wide midfielders would spend most of their time tracking the opposition's wide forwards and we'd be chucking long-balls up to D-Mac more that we are already.

It is the very reason why we were never going to win the Paraguay game at the world cup. They had us sussed down the middle and Bertos and Lochhead spent all their time in our half so we never had any width.

Besides, 4-2-3-1 has worked pretty well for us in the Boca, GCU, and CCM games. A big part of it being that Ifill works at his best running at the defence from wide positions (he is a great example of the modern winger).

Here is a case study from a couple of weeks back. https://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/08/09/three-man-defence-three-man-attack/

Yeah I know there are arguments either way, and I like the idea of a rock solid back 4, but drop Siggie for North and keep lochhead on the left, that just doesn't sit right with me.

Anyway, wrong thread.

Anyone know any good left backs on the market?

I know it's not exactly realistic, but any word on how Tristran Prattley did in the YF trial?

However good he did, I'm 100% sure he won't be ahead of Lochhead. Ian Hogg would be the next New Zealander to play LB, but even he's still way behind. Lochhead isn't great but I've been impressed with him so far this season, it showed when we didn't have him at one stage last year.

leave 4 at the back and just drop Siggie for North. Done.

I've got no problem with Lochhead, but if he were to be dropped you could do Muscat - Siggy - Dura - North (he's played RB before).

perhaps Timmo and Vinnie (the baby-faced-assassin) do too

given that we haven't dominated in mid (so far) and that Timmo doesn't seem to venture as far forward w/o Manny to cover we might do well with Moosecat back in mid

but he's also a very decent right back imo so .... cloning??

ok just noticed no transfer focus here

so... let's sign a left back to 'keep Lochy honest'

Read somewhere (can't remember source) not very long ago that Herbert was in negotiations with 2 potential attacking players with a view to signing one of them before the end of August when the transfer window closes.

I wonder if that possibility still has a pulse or the budget went on Vukovic ?

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Why? We already have Daniel, Toto, Pavlovic, Hearfield and (cough) Diego not getting any game timevaleo2010-08-24 19:34:16

None are really central attackers. Cornejo could well be, and I do want to see him in a CAM role. So apart from Diego who isn't really anything it seems we don't really have that central attacking midfielder.

Jemal Johnson is still without a club, he has been having trails with MLS teams, DC United and Kansas City atm.https://www.kansascity.com/2010/08/19/2160935/former-man-united-academy-product.htmlWonder if he still is a chance, if no MLS contract is offered.

This. When super Leo signs with Werder Bremen. Jemal looks very quality, but I imagine we have too many wide players, he'd have to be a striker. But I'm happy with Greenie and Big Mac. Our squad is so good!

So apart from a player who was brought in to play CAM we don't have a CAM? Gotcha.

Who would this CAM replace anyway? Ifill, Leo, Greenie or Big Mc?valeo2010-08-24 20:43:58

This intrigues me, because if was brought in to play central attacking why did he come on at left mid ahead of Daniel who is a proven player in that position. Now, the obvious answer is to give him a chance or whatever because we were ahead comfortably. Okay, if that's the case, then take off Greenacre or MacAllister and play him in the middle. That sub did intrigue me a little.

I'm not saying he would be an automatic starter. Could well be an impact player. New signings don't have to displace a regular.

I would like to see this attacking player to be a nippy quick forward. Just someone who can operate up top without neccessarily needing another striker up top. Thats give us true depth and options.

It would mean we could bring on someone nippy and quick for mac if thats not working. and even put cornejo on for greeny to completley change our attack.

Jamal Johnson could be a good pickup as he is quick. But he would have to play striker.
I do think we need another striker. We start with two up top yet have only three real strikers on the books. So a quick central striker would be nice
