Feel free to drop over to the politics thread then. I’d say I’ve been posting about a lot more than simply politics.
And fair challenge about coming home. You got a job going? Local football pundit? We are a diaspora nation. Japan has been a low growth economy, as well as my personal situation, I’m kinda settled here due to not getting on the (Auckland) property ladder a while back. And it being my immediate family’s home country. We’re doing better work wise, with the subsidised childcare here and having no car. That cuts out or reduces 3 daily costs. Japanese workplaces often pay for your train costs, which is another useful thing.
I’m here buying kiwi kiwifruit, pumpkin and manuka honey contributing export dollars. NZ cheese has been priced out of Japanese supermarkets for about two years. There’s still places you can buy expensive 100g of NZ cheddar sometimes. Or Parmesan. But I haven’t seen that brand in 5-6 months. And there used to be home brand pies that were made in NZ briefly.
Long story short, I’m freaked out by all the change and what it might mean to be Kiwi. I think the rate of change is freaking a lot of people worldwide though. But NZ since the beginning has been dominated by primary industries. Tourism is now substantial too, but not as reliable. If Fonterra is pulling up sticks, and giving up what little sway we had on international markets… I got no idea man. If I did I’d be rich in NZ. I’m just scared by what looks like people bailing on the 20th c NZ rapidly. And the new housing without proper support could easily become slums.
As for the socialist tag, I’m probably too thick to be one. A large part of what is good about NZ in terms of the places where we’ve taken care of people and avoided trouble comes from our socialists and the woke colonial office of that era that wanted a treaty. Otherwise we’d be South Africa or a colder, unhappier Hawaii or similar.
But as well, while overseas there’s a fair reputation for Kiwis that we work hard and play hard, we also have a reputation for not being entrepreneurial, for being lazy or being comfortable not pushing the envelope and/or, compared to others being an easy backwater mark, and not standing up for ourselves. We don’t have the drive for a dollar and a deal that some do. We’re not hard nosed Aussie winners, American hustlers or whatever. There that’s on topic. And that might come, at least partially from government dependency.
My feeling is we’re so small we have to band together and get things done that way. The state is the easiest mechanism for it, but not the only one. And if Fonterra is the shot we’ve taken and we can’t do value added product 😳. And our factories all seem to be folding given the difficulties of the electricity market among other things.
But that also means we have to agree on things. Wind farms seem a better bet than desperately searching for unknown fossil fuels we’ve given away the rights to in the exploration contract, for example. But neither is likely a lot of immediate jobs in the next ten years. No hay on a wind farm! But it is a few other economic goods.
Don’t think Trotsky is a quite right. Unless it means you’re sending around pick axes. It doesn’t right? Right?? I’m not smart enough to be Wally Nash. Probably happy as I am. One of Bernard Hickey’s overseas generation. Grand parenting by vid call.
Edit: And don’t play the victim bud. You’re better than that. Truth’s a defense against libel. You don’t have to make it true. Don’t be a Sydney blinger throwing in challenges and complaining when you get some back. Anyway we’re all off topic. And long out of date if we’re framing everything by the Cold War.
Anyway you’re right. All this crap is off topic. Which is where I should take it. Please feel free to school me there. And Merry Christmas and all! May a canceled export order of lamb or better as you wish, find you! Thanks for the check too Buffy.
Anyway this thread is specifically for Auckland Phoenix’s anti-Dome local political agenda in which Domey is responsible for all ills. Here’s the other successful academy based selling club in the league:
