Think this discussion is long overdue.
Mine.... I like him.
He has a strategic / administrative role. We don't see him on the pitch. We can't assess his capabilities or weaknesses. Only the board can do that.
Obviously, we could look at outputs. Some things I will say are:
1. He has overseen a huge expansion of the club's infrastructure. And this continues to evolve.
2. He navigated the club through covid.
3. He was a key part in seeing off Gallop's idiocracy.
There will be more, good and bad. But for me, the above are important things.

Dome was very active last season on socials engaging with all fans and getting hype up. This year not much out of him which is disappointing.
Seems like a good operator but does need to communicate more with us fans on the tough issues eg crowds, financials, stadium & club direction etc.

While the psychological need for a bogeyman is understandable enough as far as coping mechanisms and contending with unknowns are concerned, it'd help the discussion along to have a sense of exactly how it flows that the GM might be held responsible in particular for this season and how any such responsibility does not extend equally to include the relative success of the last one or any other.

Also, how much is McFlynn responsible for AFC’s success?
There’s the excellent Mr Folley and his Bournemouth (and others) connection, as well as his personal wealth and network.
Then there’s Ali Williams and Anna Mowbray who are well connected locally with money and sport.
After that Nick Becker seems to be very well connected within the A league, even if his multi-club perspective is a petro-state one, rather than accountancy wealth from …Texas.
Corica is also well connected within the A league and knows players and agents. And Danny Hay has played internationally, as well as having good connections at youth and NZ top competition level and within NZ football as an ex-All Whites coach.
Then there’s the Nix who very much kept the city bubbling with two games a season and also developed Logan Rogerson, Callum Elliot, Alex Paulsen and others.
Then there’s the good fortune of Sakai H. having friends in Auckland, which has to help.
Then after all that we get down to McFlynn’s influence.
I’m not sure how less famous names that are and have been contracted to Wellington compare.
Certainly the academy is a credit to NZ football. Rob has been active keeping the APL afloat I believe with our support for Newcastle and his work on the board. He may also share responsibility for getting Mr Folley interested in our league.
In the long run the derby should be good for us if we can hold our nerve better and compartmentalise it better as well.
It’s obvious for us a lot of public-facing leadership that’s spread above for AFC falls on our manager. Playing style, imports, squad depth and squad management have been the criticisms. We’ve frequently gone to war without a gun, as it were.
Cola, then Marco and then Chico. One of them could have worked and our conversation would be quite different. These are reasonable plans. The failures were around contracted players who weren’t wanted and the issues this created with depth. And Josh’s nerves against AFC.
How much of that failure is on Dome? Wouldn’t have thought a lot.
Would a complete overhaul of the club staff open up new potential markets for the Nix? Unlikely. Though
I guess I don’t know the age breakdown of attendees and if we can pick younger and newer fans.
So the real test is how the fall out from this season is managed and how many people can be lured back next season. IE how toxic is Chief really and how many people will be happy to give him another shot?
Kosta will be the first and next crucial point, but also if he goes we’ll survive and maybe Supyk and GSR will have breakout seasons, next to an import. Or Nagasawa will get 8-9 goals and Payne will get 5, Piper 4-5 and we’ll get 5th and then win the finals. This bleedin misery and misery ball is what’s been unacceptable.
We are the Phoenix, the Mighty Phoenix we’re not the Kingz or Knights. We’ve survived metrics, Gallop, Terry imploding, a pandemic, ‘she fell over’, and now half a season on visible depression ball…We’re guna survive and be ready to see a Libby or Sarpreet or Paulsen emerge to join the next Greeny, or Bally or Zawada, or we may even have an appreciation for one or either of our Japanese friends too, if they stick around.
(Imo Piper up front just underlined how much better Nagasawa could have linked the swift wingers around him. Piper’s best idea with his feet was good, but also shinned, and didn’t result in a shot on target.)
Anyway. TLDR- don’t blame Domey until week 3-4 next season!

Agreed, Dome's influence on the on-field results are limited even though as GM the buck does stop with him. However, Gill as the Director of Football has to take some accountability for this sharkshow of a season. He oversees and guides the manager, is ultimately responsible for recruitment and transfers, should be ensuring consistency across the academy and 1st teams and ultimately is responsible for results and the footballing environment. Across all these metrices the club has failed dismally this season as if I were Dome I would be putting him on notice. Also does not help that when he does occasionally front he comes across as belligerent and disassociated with the grassroots footballing community.

100% Dome and Gill have to be held responsible for this crap season. There is also the fiasco of the womans team where considerable resources were made available and they failed too. I would also give them 1 out of 10 for communication this season. This club has been meandering along for years with little success. Time for an overhaul IMO.

Comms from the club have been no worse or better than seasons before - I think this year we've wanted more to excplain some of the weird decisions being made on the field.
Dome has lead this organisation very well, the back end runs liek everything on the smell of an oily rag.
The onfield stuff has nothing to do with Dome - barring maybe the half time show. Gill, Griffiths and Italiano are solely responsibe for the players they picked for this season and the tactics they set.

The absence and quality of comms when it has occured has been an absolute disgrace and if we say it’s no better or worse then previous seasons it illustrates how shark it’s been for years under his watch.
It even goes as far as when the team is released on instagram one hour before. That really is basic stuff and should be user friendly to the paying or watching fan.
Names just listed lazily in number order. No flipin idea where or what position 70 per cent of the players will be playing.
That stuff should be basic stuff for a neutral who doesn’t want to spend 10 minutes wondering where the fudge is Piper playing today.
In terms of football, am I mistaken or is David Dome not on the “football committee”? Along with picking the coach I am dam sure that role also is heavily involved in player recruitment as well - while chief may say who is wants doesn’t the football committee have final sign off -management of salary cap, wages, terms etc etc?
Sounds a preety important role in a club - football committee - right?

Sure Dome and co will have the finalk say as far as wages and signings, they are running the club - but they'll all be on the coaches recomendations.
The insta stuff isnt run by Dome, we have a media manager who I'm sure has a few people who do all that stuff. Dome probably has little to no input. Yes, hes the CEO so the buck stops with him. But blaming him for little things like a lineup in insta is unfair

The thing I will criticise David on is he can appear to be quite soft & doesnt inspire ambition, not openly anyway.. A few notable examples, after our defeat to Victory last seasons semi final, he went on the YF podcast & said his biggest disappointment with losing is the “bars and nightlife in Wellington didn’t have a great night as people went out less
“ & how much he wanted to give back to the city, i found that comment odd, he’s not a city councillor, he’s the CEO of the football club, he never openly says our aim is to win trophies, but make top 6… to me, his messaging and the way he promotes the club at times feels defeatist, and then makes fans feel bad by telling them the club will collapse if we don’t get more then 10k fans.. Why would anyone go to a game where finishing mid table is considered a success? I am sure he does great work behind the scenes, but the way he communicates what success looks like, how fans need to interact with the club & the club priorities at times seem off to me.. compare it to Nick Becker in Auckland, https://www.iheart.com/podcast/211-the-mike-hosking- breakfast-24837692/episode/nick-becker-auckland-fc-ceo-ahead- 228386349/ “CEO Nick Becker told Mike Hosking that the team is super ambitious, and while he won’t say straight away that they’ll win, it’s what they’re intending to go out and do” meanwhile https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360643945/wellington-phoenix-make-decision-coaches-futures-very-soon Dome talks about the exciting projects Nix are doing… like managing Fraser Park, and opened up a boarding house… its like we focus on everything but trying to win games of football, that’s the message I get from Dome. I work in a big mult-national company myself, if my CEO comes out & says we plan to be a medium competitor in the market but we know we will never be the best I guarantee you that our shareholders, board directors and even employees will not be happy.. Aim high, what’s the worst that can happen?

So Dome takes a big picture approach to the inluence on the city that the Nix have. Thats the phianthropic approach as opposed to the insular approach that others may have.

"The disappointing thing for us is that it would have been great for that crowd to go away, celebrate a win, and go out to town, put some more money over the bar, in a city that could have deserved it and then we go onto organising a flight to a final in gosford."
As for the top 6/winning thing. Was it Gilly last week that said top 6 is a "minimum" for them. That doesn't mean it's the ultimate goal. It probably reflects roughly where the salary spend is so you want to be doing at least as good as that. Sometimes you'll "overachieve" like we did last year

I have said it before on this forum and I will say it again. I think if there was ever any genuine passion within Welnix for the Phoenix to be a successful club on the field, there is very little left. The ownership took over the Nix primarily because they did not want the city of Wellington to lose the Nix's presence. And once they had taken it over, their main priority has been to make the club break even, and this is 1000x more important to them than winning silverware. There is nobody within the organisation that was the least bit embarassed that we had never won anything prior to this season. That was completely fine.
It comes from the top, and what Domey does is entirely consistent with this (his comment about being gutted we didn't win the semifinal on the night because the bars in the city got much less business is a telling one). And this is why we have never won anything and probably never will. And it is why Domey won't be sacked and replaced by a CEO more passionate and driven to see the club succeed on the field because he is doing exactly what Welnix want, focusing on other things the club do that Welnix hope will get the club closer to profitability. Now, I understand why Welnix feel the way they do, and sure, I guess we should be grateful anyway because without them there is no Nix. But I still find it frustrating.

Bloody hell some of stuff thats said by some of you about the Nix at times just beggars belief.
To be honest i just have to sit back and laugh at some of the assumptions some of you make about those running the Phoenix.
Its so obvious most of you have never spoken to any of the coaching staff or those involved in the running of the club from the Welnix guys or the club management and their staff. Yep like any organisation at times things dont run smoothly and there can be conflict.
Because if any of you had you wouldnt be making some of the accusations you do.
Had they not taken some of the steps they did we would be long gone and nothing but i distant memory.
You bet i wish we had performed better along the way but shark im just friggen glad we have a club to watch. No matter how much some of you want it i doubt we are about to start copying Auckland.
Give me Nix fans any day of the week and speaking to some of the other teams fans they are of the same opinion.
Is the off season over yet

I personally am not interested in stories about the coach losing the dressing room or who is not talking to whom. Its gossip. What bugs me is not once making the grand final in 18 years. For a club which by A League standards has stable finances this is not good enough. You have to hold the people who run the club accountable. The chances are that unless there is a new approach to running the club we could wait another 18 years for success.
If i owned the Nix the first thing i would do is get in some external expertise to review the clubs management to see why we are serial failures.

i think I've said it before but as Ballane has said some of the asssumptions being made about our owners and CEO are way off the mark.
A few years ago in my frustration about this very thing - club direction not wanting to win anything I emailed Mr Dome, and he very promptly emailed back - his passion and frustration and the situation was as clear as mine had been when I made contact.
Lets be clear - Dome is first and foremost a very passionate football fan, he loves the game, second he is the CEO of the NIX, but also a fan.
He like the ownership love our little city and want nothing but success for it.
Enough of the "our owners are happy with mediocirty" bollocks - they are not. They are however trying to make an investment viable while building a football community in the wider refion.
They could have solely focussed on the aleague and winning, buying players whenever they needed to - and sure we may have won a trophy here and there which I'm sure we'd have been happy with, but the current option of developing youth and and academy's takes time and money and patience.
Some clubs have existed for three times as long as the Nix and won nothing!
Here are some who meet that criteria

Mind sharing your email to him on this forum?
You don’t have to share the reply unless you want to do so but I would be very interested to see what has changed since your email was sent some time ago.

here it is:

Hey David,
I’ve been watching the stories fly around about my beloved Nix and nothing saddens me more than feeling that someone is lying to me. Either Rob and the ownership team are or the FFA are. I’ve heard yourself and Rob on the radio say “the club is not for sale” and now the Sydney papers are quoting Gallop and the FFA saying they have declined a sale of $15m.
So what is it? Are the nix gone? Have Rob and the team given up and decided to try and cash out?
We are a month from the seasons end. We haven’t had a manager for nearly 6 weeks and it seems we are no closer to announcing one. Mind you who would come to manage a team that the owners don’t seem to want and the league are trying to get rid of? Besides that half the squad are off contract and those that can get signed elsewhere are looking likely to not be here next season(if it even exists).
So what’s really happening here. Are Rob and the club seriously expecting the fans to buy season passes when they clearly don’t give a toss anymore? This debacle is breaking my heart. I love this team and this game but it hurts so much to see it treated so badly.
I understand the motivation for an independent a-league without FFA and its metrics. But without a manager and team to play next season it won’t matter.
I just don’t know what to believe anymore. Someone has lied to the fans of the nix or at best hidden the full story behind media speak.
I’m hoping beyond all hope that Gallop and the FFA are just being sneaky but in all reality I can’t see why they’d decline a sale that was not real in some manner.
Cheers for listening.

I mean from my point of view, I like Domey. I don’t want us to behave like a mini-Chelsea or whoever. I prefer no dickheads.
I had a long post, but fell asleep.
But essentially the consistently top teams have resources. Other teams ride an era under a variety of top coaches.
Unfortunately Uffie, with Uli and Hemed, he failed to ascend to Arnie, Ange, Popovic, Vidmar, Montgomery et al levels of achievement. He’s not quite a top level manager.
Chief is something different. He’s an oddity. Some of you think it’s all a scam. Some of you think the football is too dull. He’s not a dominating ego in the way imo all those others are. But he’s a football guy. Is a he a genius or fraud? Probably neither, but he has plenty of ideas.
Should we be poaching someone from City to be GM/CEO/KFC or whatever? Maybe.
We’ve decided we blame Dome for posting the squad without a formation.
I dunno. It’s excuses, but for us (and Adelaide imo) Auckland crushed our season and now the fans genuflect to them. (Oh they’re so tough, so great, so we’re not worthy! ). If we handle them better, get our players fitter or sign some fitter players, we’ll see. We need to get them out of our head and play our own ball.
Any given year it’s a very tough ask for us to win anything. We’ve had some good teams. The best we can do is keep working on our conditioning and recruitment. Even then it’s a tough ask.
If Chief can’t do it, we look for the next guy who can give us hope.
I don’t think anything Dome has been doing has prevented us winning. He’s said particular marketing doesn’t improve attendance and is costly. I do think Chief should be on absolute notice after more than half a season of dross.
It’s possible to renew the club root and branch, but that doesn’t guarantee at all that we’ll win anything. Each season any win is against the odds.
