Let's say it. The Kingz and the Knights were lame. A few people liked them. They probably didn't even like themselves.

When the Phoenix v.1 were formed there was euphoria all round the country. Especially the wellingtonians such as myself were buzzing and could scarcely believe we were going to have our team.

We all fell in love with the Phoenix from pre-season. We were all so excited with Daniel, George, Clebo, Costa, Moss, Aloisi..and when Smeltzy started scoring on a regular basis we felt like we were on top of the world. And despite a lack of results, we all thought that season 1 was anything but a failure.

Then season 2 came, and the signings have been made by the club. Boom Boom, Durante, McKain, Gao et cetera. Sure, we could use another striker and an offensive midfielder, but I believe that we have a far better team this year.

However, there seems to be something missing. We aren't chanting as much as we used to, no more: "what the f**king hell was that" et cetera. We said we were going to start chants for individual players but that is not really happening.
Furthermore, the lads are not delivering, with Daniel on the bench and Costa nowhere to be seen, we lack flair. Gao often underperforms and in my view if Shane wasn't here we'd be in serious sh*t.

Now that Smeltz is gone, I wanna see a strong reaction by the club. I wanna see the lads fighting for it, not like last week. The Uni 1st (or 2nd) team would have done a far better job in Perth!
I wanna see Ricky putting his foot down. I wanna see Terry and Tony P. signing some motherf**king good players because we're always behind the club, rain or shine.

And we deserve a good A-League team.

I just hope we don't end up any more "war horses" I cringe when I hear commentators use the term, it brings back memories of the Kingz and Knights.

The young under 17  Football Ferns  were such a delight to watch - they had enthusiasm and a fighting spirit - their attitude could not be faulted and they don't play for money

Compare this to  that rabble called the Phoenix who are overpaid and over rated.

Ricki Herbet has serious problems with the tactics employed by this team , long balls hopefully hoofed to a lone striker are not the answer, some of the players are being outpaced by more skillfull opposition and the midfield has not got any creative players

Daniel has gone into his shell, Mckain is not the answer in the middle and ffs we have not got any striker apart from Smeltz , who will be leaving at the end of season

The lack of shots on goal , the goals scored speaks for itself

You make some fair points sir

I do believe he have a better team than last year.
Last year when the chips where down, the crowds turned up. This year they haven't. I put that down to an 'over promise under deliver' syndrome
Costa hasn't perform because he hasn't played.

AGREE ....... THE COACH IS the major Problem...... playing Vaughan Coveny up front [ should be used as a sub in last 15 minutes at best] and Shane Smeltz in a deeper position is " nuts " to say the least. Against Queensland he started the second half with 10 players on the pitch !!!!!....... Ricky is struggling at this level.......

The best a-league football i have seen from a new zealand team was the knights 2-0 win against Perth in their last ever game (with the possible exception of the nix first game)

He's signed a one year contract extension. After that, probably Europe.

If that was a "season defining game" our season is over.  So let's start building for next year. All we realistically have to play for is seventh or eighth spot. What's gone wrong for me is right throughout the team:
Lochead - half the player he was last year.  Seems disinterested
Durante - came with a big rep "best player in grand final" etc.  Decent enough but no leadership or passion.  Shouldn't be captain
Gao - waste of space.  Word of advice mate, you are here and not Europe because you're crap.  Now roll your sleeves up and get on with it.  Show some passion for the shirt or walk
Bertos - getting better but doesn't seem the player he was last year.  Has the look of a man who has jumped out of the frying pan into the fire
McKain - average
Brown - decent enough guy but limited talent
Coveney - a striker who can't score or last 90 minutes is a luxury we can no longer afford.  Be ruthless Ricki.  He's had a good career and now it's time to hang up the boots
Kwasnik - Huge disappointment.

In short, we have no leader on the pitch, no one who gets in the faces of the opposition and no one who can take a game by the scruff of the neck and make things happen. There's no point us having more strikers if we don't have a midfield that can find them.

On the plus side, we have two good goalkeepers, Sigmund looks good enough and our best player this season has been Dodds.  I'm no Dodds fan, but at least he looks like he cares and gives it his all every week.  He doesn't hide unlike some of his more capable colleagues.

Ricki needs to look at his coaching methods.  If he can't fire them up we're screwed because no one else will want the job.  Why was he praising the team after the game?  We've now lost twice in quick succession to the supposedly worst team in the league.  We have to accept that label now sits firmly with us.  If we finish eight again we may as well knock it on the head and give the franchise up.  Because if we can't do it with the set up we have here NZ will never have a credible team in the A-league.

The weird thing about Leilei Gao was that he was frigging awesome during a short stint at the New Zealand Knights.  He was about the only one who would regularly crack the opponents in half.

But you're right, at the moment his attitude is ordinary.

Something is wrong in the state of Denmark though, I can't believe that this squad can be so bad on field.  On paper, they're not a bad side.  I don't think the Smeltz issue has helped, I sincerely believe he's had his mind elsewhere for the last month while he's tried to cover up and pretend he hasn't signed to go elsewhere, and I don't believe his apathy to the cause has helped out the other lads.

How long is Kwasnik signed for?  He's rank average.  The Phoenix need to invest in probably a South American mid field playmaker (I say that because they genuinely need some flair), a target man, and someone who has that knack of finding the back of the net.  This season IMO is a write off, which is dreadfully bad news IMO for the growth of the profile of New Zealand Soccer in general.

I totally agree with you.

There is no energy about the Phoenix - they are  lacking of ideas, have poor form, no spirit, absolutly got no idea of goal scoring ( only shot once at the goal against Perth)  and are  playing like old men .

They could learn a lot by watching the young  under 17 Football Ferns play - with such enthusiasm & energy

Bastard Melbourne Victory... if they had sent the first team to Perth that scoreline and that day would have seen the Shambles finish 7th.

Someone mentioned spirit and also passion comes up a lot. Those are the keys for me. We know most of the players are capable, but body language is everything. Where are we going wrong? Only a couple of players have the spirit and passion to play for the Nix. The others are going to work each day getting their cheques and going home. Royal2008-11-07 12:51:12
