The truth is, I feel that the substitutions were a bit of a mess.

In my opinion we replaced 4 of the best players in the A-League with 1 reasonabl pro (Fenton) and 2 lads gaining some playing time (Old and Van Hattum), plus a legend but no defender, really just a finisher these days (Hooper).

We were winning 1-0 given that we were removing 4 of the BEST players in the league, we needed to set up a defensive formation fit for purpose. In my humble opinion.

Personally. I would have switched to a flat defence and flat midfield. An old fashioned 4-4-2. I would have had Fenton-Lewis-Rufer-Pennington flat in midfield, I mean as 4 defensive midfielders. Then Old attacking midfield and Hooper as striker.

I would even have preferred to play 4-5-1 but we didn't have the bench to do that.
Subsitutions were definately a bit of a mess but I dont think the problems with the subs was necessarily related to defence, but ball retention and game management. We've made defensive subs many times before in attempt to sit deep and hold out a game, but has it ever worked?

Uffie making reasonably attacking substitutions and not trying to hold a lead is reflective of his coaching, while keeping within his system he does tend to learn lessons and actually try something different. Yesterday it was clear that we needed to replace some tired legs, we were the dominant team so trying to keep the momentum going was the right thing to do. But bringing on two relatively fresh teenagers when we had the experience on the bench to not only keep pushing for a second while also closing out the match was very bizzare.
