So, when it is football it is big news. But when it is the Olympics it is buried in the various news websites: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/aug/01/olympics-nazi-salute-basketball-match-fined
Asked for a personal definition of the world "tolerance", Spalletti answered: "Tolerance for me is most of all the ability to understand and accept differences. Furthermore, being tolerant means that you fight against any kind of stupidity." He also promised that the club would support local initiatives to combat xenophobia and racism.
Same old UEFA always two centuries behind the times.
This same old argument is a load of bollocks. If you are 'white' then being called a white prick is OK but if you are 'black' and called a black b-----d then all hell breaks loose. You should be proud of whatever you are.
What exactly are you trying to say, Leggy? I think I may be interpreting that in a way you're not intending. At least I hope I am.
Leggy You having a laugh mate.
Kicking out racism is something that, imo, will never happen.
It was good to see Kevin-Prince Boateng walk off of the pitch the other day against Pro Patria as this does make some kind of statement. However I do wonder if he would have felt quite the same had it not of been a friendly match and instead a Champions League game, for example.
Only thing that works is to kick people out of the leagues that they love. Take England in the 80's, the English FA actually banned their own teams from playing in Europe/Oversees. This did have the desired effect and violence at UK games is now very much a thing of the past when comparing it to days gone by. Seeing such things at a UK game is now very much frowned upon. Again, I wonder if they would dare do this today with how much money is involved.... especially where the English FA is concerned and not just the football clubs that they represent. (Info about above: http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/may/31/newsid_2481000/2481723.stm)
Fact is no one is concerned so long as people keep buying the shirts, tickets and subscribe to watch the game on TV. It's a shame, as I'd not like to sit next to someone who was being racist at a football match, it's just not the place for it.
But question for me is how far is too far? Do you start walking off of the football pitch because someone said something about your mother, your sexual preference, your colour or where you were born. I'd not like it if those things were happening to me, but again I don't feel I'd walk off of the pitch because of it. Besides, those supporters sure do know how to get a rise from Kevin-Prince Boateng now... so I would imagine the opposition supporters will be aiming all chants at him from now on... especially derby games.

Never said I agree with it, just that a football match should be a place for families. What you do in your own house is up to you..... Same though, out of my entire post that's the only thing people thought to discuss. :(

UEFA - maybe the most effective solution is to kick Lazio out of the competition...
The Guardian is (I think) anti-Israel, but despite that, this article is cause for concern.
Just shows that there are ultra-nationalists all over the world and not enough iron coffins with spikes on the inside for them.
very f*cking disappointed in Inter fans being racist towards Balotelli. The team is called "Internazionale" FFS!

Wasn't Lazio Mussolini's team? Would explain a lot...
this about sums it up really :(
Probably going to take at least 5 generations for the racism to die out

Can someone start a campaign to kick Peter Herbert out of football? He is devaluing efforts to really curb racism.
UK lawyer who has set himself up as the moral high ground for football.
jumped on baddiel's bandwagon and targetted spurs as anti-semites, now equating an old NASA joke as racist.

No surprises that the club appointed Mackay then.
"Whelan later said that if anyone had been offended by his comments “to please accept my sincere apology”. He added: “I would never insult a Jewish person. I have got hundreds and hundreds of Jewish friends.” He told Sky News: “I’ve got loads of Chinese friends and I would never, ever insult the Chinese.”

Richard Barklie - a former Northern Ireland police officer - denied taking part in any racist chanting but admitted to being involved in the incident where a black man was pushed off a Paris metro train.
Have refrained from commenting on this for a few days, but this statement does little clarify things.
Nice retort from some West Ham fans here (and no I am not saying all West Ham fans are saints etc.) I just thought it was a funny dig at Chelsea:

"It's false, completely false. I defy anyone to say that I am a racist with the number of black players I had the chance to work with. (Eric) Abidal, (Alou) Diarra, (Michael) Essien and so many others, you ask them."
This seems to be the oft-trotted out line of defence (see Wheelan comment above). I'm sure people like Leggy would see that as a water-tight argument but do other people really think like that?
Replace the word "racist' with "sexist" and then substitute women's names for the players. Does that sound OK as well?

How would you defend an accusation of being called racist?
Edit: and if you changed racist to sexist I would say its also a very valid comment. He is basically saying speak to others to find out instead of taking 1 persons comments as fact.
So If someone called me sexist and I said, I'm not, ask all of the women I work with and work for me, thats me saying check with more than 1 person before drawing such a strong conclusion.

Nah. The burden of proof is on Anelka to show that Houlier is racist. Saying that you have only once seen a black man turn red faced is not racist. It may have been the first time he saw a black man turn red faced. Given we have 0 context here to those comments, can we draw any conclusion?

Just cause he worked with all those black players does not mean that he is not racist.

I love the forumites and this forum. Just when you think you have a poster sussed and pigeon-holed, they post something that makes you think again.

To be fair he didn't say I'm not racist just because he worked with them, he said to ask them.
I don't think its unreasonable to ask people to ask more than 1 person before drawing a total conclusion about him.
Or he could be a racist, I dunno, I haven't asked them or seen a response from them so I wont draw a conclusion.
