The single most important fact in the equation is this: Qatar paid Fifa for the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

If they can do that then anything and everything is possible for future tournaments imo.

You are partially right. I have fixed it for you

Cheers. Which is why I posted my previous crack about Fonterra "buying" the rights to NZ hosting a future tournament (or part of). Not entirely impossible. Hasn't Coca Cola done something similar, if not in football then some other major sports event?

I wouldnt even want a world cup here - it would be an embarrassment. Imagine Brazil vs. France or some shark in a place like New Plymouth.... lol

You might be embarrassed but 20,000 visiting Brazilians and Frenchmen would turn NP into party central. I'd go just for that.

PS Like I'm driving down from Auckland for Brazil v Hungary U-20 WC on June 4.

This is exactly why we won't ever get it. Some people seem to dramatically overestimate the sentimental value of hosting the world cup in a part of the world where it's never been held. It's probably not helped by the fact that we were awarded the rugby world cup largely due to sentimental reasons. That shark just doesn't fly in football, otherwise Australia would got more than one vote last time. Money talks, and dirty money talks loudest. That's it.

Burgess in the NZ Herald ran through the likely WC venues after Quatar and Russia. Looks like the USA is next then China then Argies/Uruguay to celebrate 100 years for something. Europe will need a turn then. He thought 2050 might be the optimum slot for an OZ/NZ bid.

Christ!!!!...thats in 35 years. I will be dead or in some old folks home dribbling down my chin and pissing my pants by then....hope I can still use the remote by then

2050 NZ will be a vastly different place. Auckland will have more than 2 million people. We have no idea what our infrastructure, transport and stadia will look like by then. Westpac, Eden Park will both be old tired stadia by then....they certainly will need major overhalls...hopefully knocked down and rebuilt as rectangles.

Blatter will be long gone by 2050. Who knows the call might be that Oz finally deserves to host the WC and sharing with NZ will be the only way the Oceania fed gets a chance to get WC hosting action.

Its all very unlikely but 35 years is a long way out and anything is possible.

The nice thing about this debate is its perfect timing with the U20 WC starting next month. The media are talking football now. Well done Martin Snedden

From that point of view, he has hit a home run.

I think Australia will get the World Cup in my life time. I get that their are plenty of big countries like China and India that haven't had it yet. England only got 2 votes for the 2018 Cup and they will probably host another one too. I don't think Australia will host it soon but eventually the fact they haven't had one will become glaring. The problem from there would be a lack of public will on this side of the Tasman and Australia probably wouldn't want us in anyway.

The other issue is that there's a pretty strong possibility that the World Cup will be a 40 team tournament in the future as FIFA just continues to try and squeeze every last cent out of broadcast and sponsorship rights. Platini is a big fan of this idea IIRC. So host nations will probably need even more stadia/infrastructure. I guess that might mean there's a greater chance of co-hosting tournaments. Still can't see us getting anywhere near it though. Unless they go for the idea that UEFA wants for the Euros now - hosted across a whole bunch of countries. Maybe we'd get 2  or 3 games in a south-east Asian World Cup with Aussie and Indonesia and Malaysia or something.

So 8 pools of 5 and the top 2 in each go through to round of 16? 4 games in the round robin section? Thats not an entirely bad idea but I think that more than 32 is pushing it.

Yup, with direct entry for Oceania as well. I don't like the idea personally. I get the desire for more teams but I think it would create too many meaningless games. Platini is favouring it to get votes in his race against Blatter, and Blatter would probably be in favour of it because more games equals more money.

It'll become one of those tournaments where people don't really give a shark until the knockout stages if they do that.

New Zealand are more likely to host the Euros than they are to host the World Cup before most of us in this thread are dead.

Forget a 40 team tournament, Figo is talking up a 48 team tournament!

I don't think we have enough stadia for that - Brazil vs Argentina at the Ring of Dirt?
