One interesting note is how none of the Nelson Falcons or Nelson College are in the NZ U17 team. Both teams proved to be the best in the country. The Falcons I could understand as the majority of the squad were too old, but there were a couple of players that were key in both teams.

A lot of them have been for their medicals, including some who would definitely require FIFA eligibility approval.
You would think that the u-17 World Cup in Chile may be in doubt post-earthquake with some of the host cities badly affected.
The quake was centred off one host city Coquimbo, and also in the earthquake and tsunami zone and badly damaged were host cities La Serena and Vina del Mar. These towns were hit by 15 foot waves with boats now resting on streets in Coquimbo.

There's a state of emergency in place in cities like Coquimbo with the military securing the area and one million people evacuated.

Five of the seven host cities are coastal, three directly in the earthquake and tsunami zone.
Even if the stadia in these cities turn out to remain undamaged, other issues such as accommodation, transport, strain on limited resources, emergency laws, evacuations etc. could make it impossible for games to go ahead.
Similar to Christchurch post February 2011 when most scheduled public events were cancelled.
NZ is playing its games in the southern-most venue of Puerto Montt which, although coastal, is a long way (more than 1000 km) from the earthquake epicentre near Coquimbo.
However, the threat there is from a nearby major volcano which began erupting in April after being quiet for 43 years:

SYRIAN U-17 PLAYER KILLED AND STAR PLAYER FLEES COUNTRY

Lots of material on the Syrian u-17 side that NZ will be facing.
A very tricky situation politically with the national sides being manipulated by the Syrian regime and used for propaganda.
The national football sides basically represent the Assad regime.
Many players in the Syrian league have been killed in the conflict, others languish in jail after being accused of supporting the rebels.
The government have threatened u-17 players with jail or death if they don't play.
One of the u-17 team was killed by bombing of his city on the eve of the AFC qualifiers.
The team's star player, midfielder Jaddou has fled as a refugee on the dangerous sea voyage to Europe and is living and playing in Germany:

His mother and two younger brothers remain in Syria where Jaddou fears the regime will kidnapp and murder them in retaliation for him and his father fleeing.

Interesting they name the squad the week after the ASB youth league sides have been named, Must be hard for the boys who were in the mix and missed out and now have no football for the summer unless they make a ASB first team
Only one South Islander in the squad - McGarry - and he lives in Wellington.
13 Aucklanders (I include the Sunderland youth goalie Woud who moved there from Auckland in August)
Six from Wellington clubs (Western Suburbs and Phoenix)
One or two of South Island origin like Stroud (who now plays in Wellington) were in the mix earlier in the year.
Seems strange that no players living in the South Island are deemed good enough to make a twenty man squad.

I've posted the same on the mpl thread it seems a long time since we've had a lad from Christchurch getting selected for these teams.
I don't think it's visibility I reckon it is we are behind the rest of nz in the men's game in developing good players why are they moving up north to be recognised
As a region we have a lot to think about is our ftc and lack of competition hampering our kids

It appears that no one from the North Island outside of Nix (Wellington) or Hay (Auckland) territory got selected. Surely there must be boys from Hamilton, Napier, Tauranga, Palmerston North etc good enough.

7 of those players selected either from Sacred Heart (Hay) or Saint Kents (Zorocich).
Of those 7, all but 1 were part of Jose's squad, and Mata only moved to Saint Kents in term 3 this year from MAGS. The new one is Imrie from Sacred Heart
could the same question have possibly come up regarding north shore or central players had thr coaches not changed
