ASBP 2015/16 TV games | Thurs 10th Mar | GF: Auckland City v TeeDubs | 7:30pm | SS4
Don't take Ali as indicative of the Service Crew Peter.
What a pleasure to watch a game in a dedicated football ground, where you could see and hear spectators, rather than in the large, apparently empty and echoing stadiums of some of the previous games. NZF and SKY have not done the game any favours by taking games away from the "homes" of the Clubs.
but they have for putting it on TV?
Long, biased, match report....

And WaiBops pumping of Waitakere was at Muir Park, so not all cavernous empty rugby grounds.
Also on the point a lot of NZ club/provincial rugby I've seen recently on TV here in the UK looks empty too. Pity us kiwi's prefer watching sport on the box over actually being at the game (football/rugby/cricket etc).

Next televised home game for WaiBOP is at FMG Stadium v ACFC on Dec 20th. That could look a bit empty too. Even emptier if ACFC progress in the World Club Cup - they're drawn to play Barcelona that day, if they reach the final! Woohoo!
things i have learned from the first half of this game:
- Rugby and League fields in summer are rubbish, Mt Smart marginally better than NHS
- Dylan Fox, massive question marks...
- Sarpreet Singh, two quality involvements but dosn't get involved anywhere close to enough
- Italiano loves the F-Bomb
- Ridenton and Rufer look pretty good at this level, much more poise than most in the Weenix side
- Lovemore had a pretty average first half, dosn't suit out wide as can't really cross
Waitakere have too many of the same type of player.... players who tend to do their own thing and play on instinct (Wylie, Coombes, Lovemore, Bowen, Gwyther etc). Doesn't make them bad players as such, in fact a lot of them are decent and can really bully a game at northern league level, but makes it hard to get meaningful combinations in national league.
They need a couple of lads whose main strength is the accuracy of their passing and who can play for others.
Good players. Bad team.
will be interesting to see if they keep the wee nix in the ASB Prem (has NZF confined?) or if the Well Nix want a youth team in the HAL youth league. You also wonder what will happen to these 16-20 year olds who don't get professional contracts with the nix - probably only 2 max a year will get one. It would be fantastic to see if any can go overseas or even to other HAL clubs.
From todays game you can see the wee nix can all play. Some are very one footed (Stevens) but they are being well coached. Ridenton impressed the more physical he got and that helped the nix get some possession in midfield.
The standard of the pitches is woeful. QBE is going to be an embarrassment this weekend.
How good was Mambo Italiano? Three absolutely fantastic saves at FULL stretch. Awesome performance.

Canterbury United are playing at their regular home ground, ASB Football (English) Park - and I think attracted the largest crowd of the season so far in the league for their opening home game vs. Team Wellie.
But no one is publishing crowd figures- nothing on the NZ Football website or in newspaper reports.
How many were at that Auckland City v Canterbury match at Kiwitea? It didn't look like so many on TV - even the stand looked only two-thirds full, and it's a small stand.
Only the two Auckland clubs and Southern united are playing in very large echoing stadia though aren't they? From TV it looks like all the other clubs are playing in smaller venues.
One problem with the small crowds though is that the microphones pick up a lot of foul language from players.
Lewis Italiano seems to be the most foul-mouthed player in the league judging from TV coverage so far after last nights display in Weenix vs. Waitakere. A constant barrage of "F" words mostly directed at his own team mates.

Not even close. Both Waitakere and Canterbury United have played in Wellington and massively outswore the WeeNix last night.

that's probably true but the perception is that due to the game last night being televised and those previous ones not that he is.

Exactly - as I said, judging solely from TV coverage. The rest of the Weenix being so young, were well-behaved.
Canterbury United were okay in the language stakes for their home game at English Park. I think management asked them to tone it down a bit.

Aussie NYL has been reduced to a point where it is almost irrelevant (8 weeks, 5 teams in 2 regional leagues, then a final i think), so not an option for Welnix.
Likely only 1 or 2 wee nix players will get a contract each year; the vast majority will pursue football elsewhere. One has just left to pursue college soccer in USA (see weenix thread topic). Other HAL clubs not an option as they take up an import spot.
Any highlights?

I don't actually have that much of a problem with the swearing, but I'm from Glasgow and we regularly construct entire sentences out of swear words. I've got no issue with the players being told to tone it down though. As has been suggested elsewhere, SKY should just remove the effects mics. They aren't needed and, in a huge empty stadium they'll pick up and amplify every naughty word that's uttered.
The Kiwitea crowd was dodgified by the kickoff time, at 4:35pm the sun was streaming into the shed on that side and the seats on the same side of the camera were packed with spectators. Lots even moved round during the game.
My estimate? Sub-1000, but +500.

the Canty crowd did look big on Tv

Cannot recall the exact number but I think was well over the 1000 mark, announced over the PA that was the largest crowd at ASB Football Park for over two seasons.

Nice writing JR. Thanks.

What's the point? They will fold next season to be replaced by Hamilton Wanderers

Sure is. And if you can't make it to ASB Football Park, and don't have Sky, you can follow tonight's game here.
We need someone to run some dodgy streams for us
commentary's a bit better than Nix games. Slower and letting game do the talking. The two person Nix coverage might not be the most effective.

That is because it is Jason Pine, he knows his stuff and knows when to be quiet.
Next game is not TW vs SU - Dave Farrington cannot support Sky's broadcasting structures

Thanks, corrected. Was on the list as next game but didn't actually look at Sky TV guide which shows it is the Hawkes Bay v Phoenix game instead.
