I do sense that you don't really have a lot of time for art though... I can understand that as well to be honest. Some art pieces appear to have no meaning - I certainly never appreciated a lot of these things when I lived in Upper Hutt. My viewpoint seems to have changed a lot since moving away, and visiting regularly, seeing it with fresh eyes each time. It's a very attractive place in terms of nature, and there are a lot of hidden gems out there - like some of this artwork that I've only really looked at properly since I left. I think Upper Hutt generally gets a bad rap that isn't deserved.

The woman and children sculpture is at the train station - did it used to be at the entrance to Timberlea? I don't recall that at all - when was it moved?
That's quite interesting.

I note that the buddhist (I think?) temple is still "under construction" on the corner of Hillside Drive and Moeraki Road - that started when I went to the primary school on that street in the 80s!

Where do you live in Upper Hutt LG? What is your history with the city?

Hiya Paul. Me? Lived in Upper Hutt for 50+ Years. The Solo Mum statue got moved in the 80's? or late 70's as the residents up there kicked up a stink for being unfairly labelled. Well, the Solo Mums there did anyway. Not into art? I sure am. I've been to the Louvre, Seen the masters, ditto with the Cistene Chapel. I don't mind sculptures. Not into surreal crap though. It reminds me of an old joke - How many Surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb? The Fish!

Upper Hutt does get a bad rap as you say. But Council after Council seem content to waste money is some areas and not use money to push forward in more important ones. How many closed shops in and around that Mall? Hazelwoods should have been shopping, not a military building. Shops around it are empty or dying.

Currently I live in Trentham but spent 35 years in central. Went to Oxford Crescent Primary School.

lastly, although I alluded to wasted money on some things. I recently was away for 2 weeks and came back to find myself blown away by the Christmas Decorations all over Main Street adding to the spirit of the season. Lights everywhere, in the trees, across the roads....oh hang on, there wasn't any.

sounds like you guys hung out with the nice people of upper hutt, my parents moved us there from west auckland when i was in the 4th form one of the worst decisions of my life. when i first got there i was bullied a bit at school and ended up going off the rails and started drinking at 14 as i was hanging out with older not so nice people as they accepted me quicker than the nicer more respectable people. upper hutt tought me that there are a lot of arsholes out there in the world and you have to stand up to them. this got me into many situations and beaten down on more than one occasion. the local bike gang somehow thought i was in the mongrel mob and the mongrel mob thought i was in with the bike  club so i spent many a night being either attacked or running very quickly to save my self.i am now not a fan of upper hutt because of this and do not go there any more as my parents moved up the kapiti coast about 3 years ago.

Sinn Fein haven't existed for about 10 years. They were over in Lane Street for a lot of years and in King Street up until the mid 80's.

You could argue holeinone all your parents did was move you from the fire to the frying pan. West Auckland could be a pretty dangerous place as well if you strayed into the wrong area.

did not really notice any of that in west auckland in the seventies it was all good, but i spent most of my time at brains park in kelston playing football and training or just kicking a ball round with mates.

Can't get all this Hutt loving,  It's a bleak place.  Turning a corner in Rome and seeing Trajan's Column for the first time that is attractive. The Hutt river is usually just a trickle with rocks and the surrounding hills make the Hutt a strange and oppressive series of dwellings..

Really grim I remember seeing the name and thinking "well that sound nice". Jeez and I have to work in Porirua!!!

Andy though is a fine chap and all my in laws come from Upper Hutt too.

Bloody hell you must have been in the good part of the west as i lived out that way in the early to mid seventies and it wasnt called the wild west for nothing.

I will have you know that Upper Hutt has one of the biggest growth industries going - Shop Closures! We're trying to catch up to Wainui with exhorbitant rates!

And that "New" shop in the mall building their new internal solid wall has probably just about killed off Maidstone Sports whom have been around since the mid 70's at least. I really feel for Trevor because he's only just moved into what was an excellent location.

Went up to staglands today with the wife and kids, on the way back we stopped at a blueberry place and spent half an hour picking blueberries. They were yummy. $20 for a kilo might sound a lot but for something different to do, it was fun. 2 for the container and 2 for me...?

www.bluebank.co.nz they have a website.

Don't get me wrong, I've associated with many a bad apple out in the hutt as well.

Just saying it gets a bad rap for what is definitely not a bad place.

As for someone saying the river and hills look like crap, well, what can you say to that. Ridiculous really.

Arf!

The old man told me when he was young and his parents ran a dairy, the fizzy bottles would have a line on the side that the fizzy had to at least come up to, to make sure you got your money's worth.

These were the days before proper seals prevented tampering, so if they were thirsty, him and his brother would open bottles, sip them down to the line, then put them back in the fridge.........

Couldnt find a joke thread so thought I'd chuck er in here.  got a good chuckle from this today.

While stitching a cut on the hand of a 75 year old farmer, whose hand was caught in the squeeze gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.

Eventually the topic got around to politicians and their role as our leaders.

The old farmer said, "Well, as I see it, most politicians are 'Post Tortoises'.''

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post tortoise' was.

The old farmer said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on top, that’s a post tortoise."

The old farmer saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain.

"You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he's elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dumb arse put him up there to begin with."

Excellent explanation of a politician!

Another wasted chance gone missing. That was so frustrating. Football is quite simp,e, get the ball up to the rightend and kick it into the net. Not at the Nix. We pass it from this side of the field to that side of the field at least five times before getting into a good spot, then we pass it across the pitch again 5 times instead of fudgeing taking a fudgeing shot!
