Is that the one about Izzy Whitley, or Andy Boyens? Also Adam Mitchell can't get a gig in Auckland so is playing for Waibop

He was pretty tidy at left back for FHM this year and is still developing. Boyens and Mulligan must see something in him

you'd be looking a long time to find a player that trains harder than him. Extras as well.

He was good enough to play for Waitakere United in the O-League, and is naturally left-footed.

He's got everything that most teams are lacking.

And if pace is your only criticism - that's probably why he doesn't play up front?

Ok if he trains hard he must be good then!

Waitakere are hardly a powerhouse are they..

Sorry but he's bang average and in my opinion will get found out big time

Are the rumours about cough "Wanderers" cough, true?  I'd find it very hard to follow them as I've never had the impression they they care about anyone besides themselves.

Given how parochial Waikato clubs are I think regional representation is much better then any one particular club representing us.  Might work in Auckland for Central, can't see it working for us.

Hi Marto,

It is in the nature of belonging to a club that you primarily serve the interests of that club.

However you may be being a bit harsh on Wanderers Sports Club. They've had a good record of support for national league when it was based at Ngaruawahia, at Porritt Stadium, and indeed, when Melville ran it from 1996-98. Far better than my own club's record in that regard.

I also would favour the federation model, and think it is really bold of Wanderers to put their hand up to run solo, given the long-term prescription for mandatory men's women's youth and futsal teams.

But credit to them for having a crack. They deserve support.

Thanks for the info Bruce.  I remember watching Melville United at Poritt but thought that had more to do with HCC then the Wanderers.  I was not aware of the input they had while Waikato played at my home town club (Narras) so that's good to hear.

I thought Wanderers chairman Brendon Coker, in particular, played a very positive role as Waikato FC looked to rebuild during the Ngaruawahia years.

When Melville were in the national league several Wanderers people served on their summer working committee.

at the game yesterday. City deserved the win, but not a bad performance from Waibop.

That stadium is easily the best football venue in NZ, good stands, amazing pitch. just wicked. its a shame its wasted on rugby. the nix need to come to town

Was at the game today, Waikato were wasteful but what a game coming back from 2 goals down to win with the second to last kick of the match.

Game aside, this was the first NZFC/ASBP game I've seen since '06 when I left NZ and sadly I'd have to say the Waikato team then was better then the Waikato team out there today.

Well done again WaiBop. A well coached team with a clear plan and there to play for each other. As for Waitak, just embarrassing.  Mind you, the money men of Eastern Suburbs may now have realised that what buys you the has been league of the NRFL is not enough for the next step. Just because you have an accent doesn't make you a good footballer. And neither does getting paid

Readers can make up their own minds on the symbolism of it all, but WaiBop United has had to "default" on its "Final Match".

An end of season and "end of existence" function, titled "The Final Match - A Celebration of WaiBop United" which was due to have been held at the Ebbett Volkswagen showrooms in Hamilton on Saturday night has been cancelled.

Chief executive Mark Christie this week advised invitees that many of the players were unavailable.

"We simply do not have enough able to attend. On top of that everyone seems to be busy and we have had low general RSVPs. I would like to thank all of those who were intending to come and I apologise for the inconvenience."

The summer-winter changeover time of season has always been tricky to negotiate, biut it's sad it had to end this way.

Still, if anyone wants to reminisce on how equally untidily it ended for Waikato United 20 years earlier (April 1996) - eating crappy hamburgers in a Taupo parking lot with a can of lager - .read my account at the bottom of this webpage....

Hi Vim, shouldn't really distract from the thread topic, but what the hell, here is another Waikato Chronicles excerpt, from the second summer league in early 1997 (Melville v Napier)....

Summer Sideshow

I have invented a new game for New Zealand fans called Summer Soccer Sideshow. It is simple to play. All you do is try and beat your mates to score 500 points over the rest of the season using the following scoring options.

Before the match:

Score five points if you have trouble getting a car park within 300m of the ground.

Score 2 points for every misspelt name in the programme. A bonus 5 points if you can read the programme cover-to-cover in under five minutes.

Score 10 if you hear/read Mark Paston being tipped as the next All White keeper. Score 1 if you hear/read of more players wanting to leave Mt Maunganui.

Score 5 if Brian Chisholm is listed as “toughest opponent” in the programme’s player profile.

Score 10 points if the weather is actually very summery.

Score 30 points if you can identify an away fan from any of the following clubs: Woolston, Wellington, Nelson, Mt Maunganui.

Score 20 points if there is pre-match entertainment. Take 10 points off if it is a fat lady singing.

During the match:

Score 10 points if the ref kicks the match off two minutes early while fans are still coming in the gate.

Score 20 points everytime you hear someone ask: “Which one is Justin Fashanu?”

Score 40 points if you hear a chant or a song from the terraces.

Score 10 points if the ref awards a goalkick after the keeper has brilliantly tipped a shot over the bar.

Score 15 if the PA announcer gets the name of the goalscorer wrong. Take a bonus 5 if the mistake is repeated in the next day’s newspaper.

Score 5 points if the referee chickens out and gives a freekick a foot outside the box for what was a blatant penalty.

Score 5 points every time a current All Whites squad member is substituted. Score 10 if they start on the bench. Score 20 points if the All Whites players look international class.

Score 5 points if the referee decides not to enforce any of the following rules: Handball, 10 yards from free kicks, swearing, kicking the ball away at free kicks.

After the match:

Score 10 if the home team won (unless it is Mt Maunganui, in which case score 100).

Score 80 points if Noel Barkley has correctly predicted the winner in the Sunday News. On second thoughts, make it 180.

Score 50 points if you thought the playing standard was as good as in 1992.

Score 20 if the home club can’t be stuffed having aftermatch speeches. Score a further 50 if they do and you can understand what Eddie Edge is on about.

Score 5 points if you hear players boasting that they have made a killing on the match at the TAB. A bonus 10 points if the TAB was actually running a book on the game.

Score 2 sympathy points for every pint consumed where a beer costs more than $2.50 at an away venue. Take a bonus 10 points if the very rich home club charges $60 for an aftermatch tray of cans for your team’s players.

Score 15 points everytime the official match attendance is announced as being twice the number (or more) of your head count.

Score 10 points if a player gets a mention in the Herald match report who wasn’t actually playing.
