Disappointing in the way we played.

Oh Why was Hope Solo getting booed during the match??

Half time 1-0 to the US.  we're getting into their box more then they are in ours but our strikers look clueless again, just like they did in Canada last year.  The Ferns really need a Chris Wood or Shane Smeltz type to progress long term I think.

we played like a team of brockies.

She actually posted pictures with insect repellents and nets over her face being safe against the Zika virus. People found that insulting. Then she found out and backpaddling that is not as bad as the US media making it.

Fans did a "Boooooooh!" and when she shot "Ziiika!!!" I thought that was pretty funny.

We have a good chance of beating Columbia. I only hope we can keep France to 2-3 goals.

Fingers crossed but we really need to show some teeth up front.  Only one decent shot at goal, the others looked more like kiddy shots against the US.

Can't see us scoring against France but if we can keep the score down like today and beat Colombia we should qualify.

Solos also got a few DUIs and a domestic assault charge I recall.

Decent first half have played most of the game in Columbias half. Nicely taken goal. The US beat France which hurts us a bit. Would have been better to have France relaxed about having qualified. I think they will hurt us.

Fingers crossed we can score a couple more against Columbia.  Wish we would get the ball to the feet of our strikers more, Ambers goal shows that our tall players can use the ball with their feet.

Yes need more goals if we are to progress as one of the best third placed teams as will be a big ask to yet points off France. Will Rosie White get on the park?

That was a horrendous red card.  Erceg in front of the Colombian and gets her heels clipped and fouled, Colombian takes a dive and Erceg goes somehow for DOGSO.

Edit:  Sorry, no heel clip, a possible push in the back, but definitely no foul by Erceg, let alone a red.

Is there a way to appeal the red card after the game? Or is that not in the 'Olympic Spirit'

A lot to be proud of with that performance. Most impressive was how the Ferns absorbed the pressure in the first 10-15 of the second half then got their counter attacking going - especially down the left. Thought Rosie White added some spark up front and Bowen also. Good tactics and subs by Reading. Arceg is a Ryan Nelson type figure and I think will be greatly missed against France.

Anyway a great performance. I really hope lots of young girls see the Ferns and decide to take up football.

Usually you can only appeal for mistaken identity or wrong on a point of law, not for calamitous incompetence, so I doubt it.

If the ref gave this for DOGSO on the shirt pull, then it's wrong on point of law.

The tough bit is we need Sweden to beat China by a few goals and for us to keep France to as low a score as possible or a win/draw for us. The most likely scenario is that we lose to France. Australia should easily beat Zimbabwe so we are battling China for that 2nd 3rd place spot. Right now we are the underdogs for that.

100% No fairplay award for Colombia. She fell very dramatic, clear dive behaviour and other players called for a card. I hate this shark. To bad because it was a pretty fair game put to that moment.

She must have given it for DOGSO, but it clearly wasn't a DOGSO situation. So there are grounds for appeal.

That had to be the softest red card in history although in fairness the Columbian chick went down faster than a $2 hooker or Christiano C Ronaldo for that matter.

the Columbian keeper was diving all over the place too and got two free kicks when no kiwis even touched her, including one situation where we would have scored had it not been for the simulation.

I thought the ref did a good job in the 1st half but almost seemed liked she'd been given a stuffed brown paper bag at half time, based on her second half performance.

Not a fan of Hannah Wilkinson either, never plays well for NZ, is the Ferns Plodder (Christie).

She has scored 23 goals in 73 games. Which isnt so bad. Includes an equaliser against Mexico in the 2010 World Cup.

I've always thought she was one of our better players.

While not fully aware of her stats, when I was in Canada for the WC last year she seemed out of her depth and has appeared the same in Rio.  How many of her goals have come against top class opposition?

Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand - surely whether or not it was a DOGSO situation is a matter of interpretation of the referee?

Edit: I'm sure you are right, and I certainly hope so - as Erceg is hugely important to us.

Incident 54 sec

Is the below rule change still in effect?

Players who get sent off will be forced to serve an immediate one-match ban with no right of appeal, Fifa have announced.

The hard-line ruling, confirmed by Fifa president Sepp Blatter today, will be enforced in every league in world.

Red-carded players will miss the next match of the competition they were sent off in, and only be allowed to appeal against suspensions of more than one game or to claim a case of mistaken identity.

The move will cause major changes in disciplinary procedures in British football, where until now dismissed players have had 14 days before they have to serve a suspension, and where professionals have in the past escaped bans by using video evidence.

"From now on any player sent off will face an automatic suspension for one match. Their are no exceptions unless the referee has made a mistake," Blatter confirmed. "We must protect the position of the referee and the fundamental laws of the game."

Fifa have acted following a match between Grasshoppers and Basle in the Swiss league last month in which Grasshoppers' Fabrice Borer was sent off.

The decision was subsequently annulled by the sole disciplinary commissioner of the Swiss league.

Fifa will be contacting all 204 national associations over the next few days to inform them of the decision - and the new ruling is expected to come into force next month.

EDit add 2016/17 changes:

Law 12 – Fouls and Misconduct

• Foul with contact is a direct FK

• Advantage for a RC – indirect FK if offender then gets involved in play

• Change of wording for handball so that not every handball is a YC

• Some DOGSO offences in the penalty area are punished with a YC

• Attempted violent conduct is a RC, even if no contact

• Striking on head/face when not challenging an opponent is a RC (unless negligible)

• Offence against substitutes, team officials, match officials etc. is now a direct FK

• Foul off the field penalised with a direct FK on boundary line (penalty in own penalty area)

Except when referee has made a mistake which will be what the Kiwis will be fighting the ruling on.

All good mate - yes, there is a degree of interpretation, but it has to be within the reasonable application of the law. Under the current Laws of the Game, when considering whether a situation is DOGSO, referees have to take into account the following:

• distance between the offence and the goal

• general direction of the play

• likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball

• location and number of defenders

On most of those fronts, the incident in question fails to meet the DOGSO criteria, so that raises the issue of wrong application of the law, and forms the grounds for appeal.
