Have Nikon D90 and it's very good starting point! Would also consider Canon 50D if funds can stretch that far.
that could be me lol
I have had some experience with SLR's before but it has been a while. Thanks for the advice I will look into both of those!
Go in to a shop and try them out, see what works for you best. I was in at Photo Warehouse on Victora St and overheard some guy talking about his back pack and it did all the things you're after just can't remember the name of it, something kinda cool anyways.
I ended up getting a Canon 60d, after some advice from a friend and the fact they dont make the 50d's anymore i think. Doesn't sound there's too many in the country if any one was thinking of getting one, having trouble getting stuff out of Japan understandably.
The little bag i got for it has its own rain jacket! i was well impressed :)
Have spent hours trawling the internet only to bamboozle myself with information.
Needing some advice on a good camera bag.
You want a Kata. I don't know the model of mine, but it fits my camera, three lenses, a laptop, general crap and a tripod. My mate works in a camera store and says they are the best too - and much cheaper than others. Cost between $150-200 by memory. You may find even cheaper on trademe.

Why can't it be July already? I wanna go shopping for camera stuff!!!
Tax return? Divorce finalisation? Charitable giving rebate?

Anyone got a Canon 10-22mm they want to get rid of?
Sorry. Just got one myself just before Xmas. Won't bore you with how great it is or how little I paid for it at Turners in a "damaged insurance goods auction".
Pretty much just hating on you right now.... How much you pay for it?
I'm constantly trolling Trademe for a cheapie. I'm sure something will show up eventually
Talk about a score!
I've been eyeing those up for a wee while. But as of yet I don't think I'm enough of a camera geek to get one...
Would need to sell Nikon 18-55mm VR II Kit lens first though which I can't imagine will fetch much.
Have my peepers on a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 on eBay for AUD$339 (approx $425 NZ Pesos).

I guess this is related:
I'm looking at getting some photos up on my website of the fever tees (or the flag) I've done in action. Does anyone have decent photos which I can use for this purpose only. Can include a photo credit and a link to your own site or whatever you like in return. Christo2011-02-16 22:35:59

Trademe is great. Just bought a Canon Speedlite 540EZ flash for just $170! such a steal. In fact, it's like $600 cheaper than brand new and it's in great nick.
Gave up and bought one new for $199!
Great lens too!!!
What would you guys recommend as a decent-ish camera to get. I probably don't need anything too too flash, but probably a DSLR instead of a point and click.

Any lower spec camera's are generally just glorified point and shoots with useless features designed to make non-serious photographers believe they can be world class photographers with their product!
Also recommend doing a short course on how to use the camera. Very usefull indeed if you haven't dabbled in the world of SLR before!!!

Any suggestions anyone?
Thinking backpack with tripod carrying capabilities and large enough to carry DSLR body + 3 lenses (potentially more in the future)

We don't have fancy Camera stores here in Napier!

Cheers for the heads up on Kata. Had seen their gear but not really taken much notice until now. Will do me some research!!!
you'll prob pick it up super cheap in Sydney too!
Scrapped the backpack idea for the moment in favour of the Lowepro Stealth Reporter 300AW Shoulder Bag.
Had a think about it and its the most practical bag for me at the moment.
Mind you, will probably change my mind again when I hit the shops in Sydney...

Lowepro Stealth Reporter 300AW FTW!!!

And we want you out of the country. Win win really.
For anyone in the low spec DSLR market, Pancakes' www.firstin.co.nz had Canon Rebels (American EOSs) on the other day for about $750 brand new, which is cheep cheep.
He reckons they'll be going around again soon.
And we want you out of the country. Win win really.
Was gone for 3 weeks. What more do you want?

Back to Sydney again after Easter!
WOOT WOOT!

You really don't want to know but as I've had a really crap few days at work, it looks like I'm due for a few more and it's 50/50 as to whether I will get to the game or not, I'll cheer myself up by gloating...
$350... which was a bit of a punt as I wasn't allowed to try it on a camera and it was just a visual inspection.
Unfortunately the good news doesn't stop with there being nothing wrong with the lens, it came with "accessories" which turned our to be a 550D body that they weren't allowed to list as an item they didn't know if it worked or not due to "no battery". This too works fine and just small dent where it has been dropped.
Sorry, but all in all, it made my Xmas and after taking a few trial shots, I now fully understand why, when you look at houses on opentoview, they seem smaller when you go to see them.
Also got some great shots of the night sky (taken in the middle of nowhere) after leaving the shutter open for 30 minutes at a time.
I'll keep an eye out for you...
Talk about a score!

Keep an eye of Turners Auctions as well. The prices at the "specifc" auctions can go high because you get dealers going (by this I mean if it's mainly camera stuff on sale then the prices will be higher) but in the general goods ones (Air NZ lost and found, Insurance/Liquidation Company Sell Off, even Police Lost and Found I'm led to believe) you can pick up a bargain. I just wouldn't buy a car from there..
In the meantime.. why not console yourself with one of these ???
I need a Nikon Speedlight SB400 or higher.
Taking snaps at the Brother In Laws wedding on Waitangi weekend.
Anyone have one I can borrow? Happy to pay for courier

Need a Canon 70-200mm, preferably f2.8, for Thursday. Anyone able to help me out?
Scouring TradeMe for an elusive bargain to satisfy my lens fetish!
Wondering if it's nearly time to also upgrade to Full Frame goodness like the Nikon D700 or Canon 7D.
One can dream...
