Readings has used basically the same players for his entire tenure. Has never even given fringe players within the squad a chance. He is the opposite of Anfony.

Ferns highlight entire problem of NZF players and development

We can't develop a playmaker to save ourselves. Each random one that turns up every 5-7 years never gets a fair run because we don't know how to  play them in .

Overall our attacking third options are dire.

Anyway China 3-1 and upwards and onwards.

if you read football nzs article then we dominated the first 30 min . If you believe fifa report of the game it was even for 30 mins then France dominated . That would suggest to me that its looking good for Reading if he wants to stay.

Readings has to move on not saying the team has gone backwards but they haven't improved. Also some bold statements came from the management team how they were aiming for gold and after the loss to the USA how they would win the group.Time for Readings and his group to go.In a word FUNDING

So we finished the worst of the third placed teams with only Zimbabwe, South Africa and Colombia worse than us in the tournament.

In other words after the group stage we finished ninth of the twelve competing teams.

And only Zimbabwe and Colombia had a worse goal difference than us:

Zimbabwe:  -12

Colombia: -5

NZ: -4

Only South Africa scored fewer goals than us (zero compared to our one)

Even Zimbabwe scored three goals.

Not impressive stats.

This tournament proved once again that there's a big gap in women's football between say the top ten teams in the FIFA rankings (of which we faced two in our group and were well off the pace) and the next ten including us.

There's also a gap between approx. places 11 - 14 and 15 - 26 or so (we're at #17)

We're always going to be handicapped by our small population, lack of resources and isolation in a weak confederation.

I can't see any way around that really.

I doubt if we'll ever crack the top ten in women's football or move up much from where we always hover at 16 - 17.

If other countries improve, we'll fall down the rankings. And I think a lot of the European countries will improve (as Iceland have recently in leaping above us in the rankings).

Yep, as more semi and fully professional woman's leagues are set up around the world we're going to fall backwards. The Phoenix were talking about entering a team in the W League at one point, I wonder if that's still in the plan? At least we won't be competing with West Asia money.

I think you are right about the difference between the top 10, the next 10 and the rest, I would put us in the next 10

Looking at Tony Reddings record since he took over in 2011 he has won 22, drawn 20 and lost 27

The confederation we have won most against is unsurprisingly Oceania, but we have only played 6 games in 5 years and won them all (I didn't count when PNG failed to turn up)

After Oceania, UEFA is where we have had most wins (7) and most draws (8) (23 games in total, 8 losses)

Where we have faltered the most is Asia & CONCACAF which are the main powerhouses of the women's game

We tend to be aiming for competitions that are European based like the Cyprus Cup and the Algarve Cup, which are great but the opposition is usually European rather than the Asian or CONCACAF powerhouses of Women's football

This is where I think the women's game suffers from male coaching. In the men's game the powerhouse federations are UEFA & COMMEBOL. The Women's powerhouse confederations are Asia and CONCACAF.

Men come into the women's game with great ideas, but they originate from their traditional men's outlook. In Women's football it doesn't work! 3 of the last 4 Women's world cups winning coaches have been Women!

NZ needs a new approach to the Women's game - while coming up against the world champions (USA) and the 3rd ranked team (France) in the group stage wasn't great, the ending result will be a cut in funding from SportNZ and Tony Reddings telling us the team has improved - for a team that had 1330 caps between them before the Olympics he still comments like they are new debutantes.

Pete we can be top 10 but the exact same thing which hurts the male game is what we need to overcome in the female game. We need to produce more players with outstanding ball control. The main difference between us and France and the USA was ball control. We arent a massive jump behind but when the ball starts to get pushed around faster and when we were under pressure in tight spaces our control couldnt cope and lead to spilled ball or poor passes.  All of this comes down to our national ethos regarding how we play and how we are coached, we have too much of an anglo/saxon mentality where heart and graft are valued more than flair and individual ability.

We had the toughest group by far, the #1 and #3 side, I never thought we could qualify and this result relative to our group was the most probable one.

We can crack the top 10 but we do need to produce more players like Annalie Longo ( as well as make more use of her in games). We arent that far off being top 10, at least we are a hell of a lot closer to top 10 than our mens side is to top 50.

I suppose my disappointment with things is that this is very similar to how things panned out in the world cup. and apart from giving an already experienced team even more experience in the meantime, Readings has not changed much in the meantime. He has seemingly not looked outside of a very tight core group of players. This has built a great team spirit undoubtedly but  team spirit will only get so many results.

It would be interesting to analayse the results and the players used in the say year before and since the last world cup.

We can not do the same thing over and over and expect different resluts

I find it funny that he is calling for more funding when his program is the most funded of all the NZ sides!!!!

If he is getting the most funbing (and I thing High Performance chips in a lot), its a bit hilarious to ask for more..... At the expense of whom would that be? We have a national comp that does not even fund itself and has no sponsor.

Perhaps he is asking back handedly for Andy Martin to do his fudgeing job?

Have we joined the point where the funding needs to be reorganised. I think this team and players can stay in the top 20 but have also almost reached their peak and that the best thing long term is to provide a way to make the next girls/women coming through are as technically proficient as possible. Divert some of the funding for the womens team towards that purpose?

Surely by cutting funding every time the Football Ferns do badly they'll just get progressively worse. They did better than the men at the Olympics, that's for sure.

Now in a contract dispute as Sky Blue's saying she isn't officially been released, though she thought she was (and had been reported as such) but if she is still contracted to them will stuff up her signing with Olympique Lyon in France

Indeed it did. Briar Palmer maybe a tad unlucky to be included among the forwards there. Rest are existing Ferns/U20s/U17s and hard to argue with (unless you're one of the whining parents on the Northern League Forum)

Shame to see that Sarah Gregorius has retired from the Football Ferns aged only 29.

Has over 80 caps already.

One of their most energetic and skillful attacking players.

Certainly weakens the team somewhat.

In her last three games for NZ, at the Rio Olympics though, she started only one game and came on as a sub for the last 30 minutes in two others.

Most of the new options like Pereira don't impress me much to be honest.

Pereira strikes me as physically strong but not very skillful. I've seen her in the women's national league and she wasn't as good as anyone on the Canterbury Pride side.

No doubt someone like Paige Satchell is a promising talent but not ready to start for the senior side yet.

Hearn and White look like our only reliable goal-scoring options.

Two very classy goals in that first international in Auckland on Saturday:

Probably better goals technically than any of those scored later in the evening in the Phoenix vs Western Sydney match.
