With some many preliminary games I don't see why they don't just call it Round One. Some fringe teams might be more interested in entering if they get to play in the main draw, rather than paying money just to get a shot via a preliminary round.
Fudge me, NZF are amateur hour sometimes.
Games for preliminary round ground and times confirmed
Surprised that NZF haven't highlighted the Marist v Seatoun game as they both are past winners of the cup, but then when it comes to the Chatham Cup NZF seem to forget anything exists south of the Bombay hills
Marist have won it twice
1932 5-0 v Millerton All Blacks (Buller)
1946 2-0 v Christchurch Technical
And were runners up once
1945 3-4 v Western (Christchurch)
Seatoun have won it twice
1957 3-1 v Christchurch Technical
1958 7-1 v Christchurch City (a record win in a final, shared by Christchurch United who beat Rotorua City 7-1 in 1989)
All a fair while ago but still should be celebrated
Maybe they didn't want to highlight the fact that both clubs now play in Capital 2
when it comes to anything NZF seem to forget anything exists south of the Bombay hills
FTFY
such a piss poor job of promoting what is their widest ranging and most accesible event.

Good luck to HNK Auckland Croatia today in their Chatham Cup debut at West Hamilton! Some recognisable faces there - Nick Farac, Zoran Kacic-Bartulovic and Leo Shin to name a few.

debut?
this is the 3rd time they have entered - although I can see why they might like to forget the previous 2 occasions
in 2004 they lost 7-1 at Gisborne Thistle and 2006 they lost 9-2 at home to......Gisborne Thistle
3rd time lucky?
Re: Debut
Even the chairman told me it was our debut soooo..anyway, its a rare thing, put it that way
2-0 Napier Marist over Gisborne Thistle
Great game, great day for the club. Huge credit to Matt Hastings and the Gizzie lads
4-0 Seatoun over Marist. First foul of game after 4 mins saw Seatoun player dismissed.

and the match report from Anendra with the revised history of the club in the Cup. Error was on the part of the part-time club historians/admins. anyway the Thistle Cup Hex is broken
Central/Capital Games - Home Teams first
Napier v Havelock North
Red Sox v Napier Marist
Wanganui v New Plymouth
BNU v North Wellington
Upper Hutt v Kapiti
Island Bay v Waterside Karori
Vic Uni v Stop Out
Petone v Lower Hutt
Naenae v Seatoun
Wainuiomata v Western Suburbs
Stokes Valley v Tawa
BYES: Miramar Rangers, Wellington United, Olympic, Wairarapa United and PN Marist.
Weird having byes when they had a prelim round....surely could've just bought those teams straight into round 1, and had less teams with byes..
But then you have 2 extra teams later in comp when you need it to be 16,32,64 etc
Mainland Draw - hopefully no changes this time
FC Nelson vs. Nelson Suburbs
Central Pirates vs. Richmond AFC
Cashmere Technical vs. Western
FC Twenty11 vs. Coastal Spirit
Ferrymead Bays vs. Selwyn
Nomads vs. ChCh United
Parklands vs. Halswell
Waimak vs. Universities

Yes byes should only occur in the Preminary Round, usless not enough teams have entered which does not seem to be the case here.

30 teams in central/capital, 8 in central, 22 in capital.
Need to get that down from 30 to 2 by the quarterfinal stage, 4 by the round of 16, 8 by the round of 32, 16 by the round of 64, 32 by the round of 128 (Round 1).
If we ignore keeping central/capital split, right away we have issues, as you can't go 30-15-7.5. So you could go, 2 byes, 28-14(+2)-8-4-2. Not sure why they didn't do that, to be honest (this is quick math, so maybe I've missed something)

Napier v Havelock will be a big game locally in HB Havelock seem to be doing ok under Chris while Napier seem to be struggling a bit. Napier Marist will be happy with that draw as well would have to back themselve away at Red Sox
And if you do have to use byes - make them random? They've chosen 6 Central League teams to have byes, when it really should just be whoever is left in the pot once all the games are drawn.

You could still do it so the same number of teams progress I'd have thought.

I think seeded byes are the best - magic of the cup and all that, but trying to provide close matchups early on, and having weaker teams meet their match before anything really embarrassing happens is sound thinking, won't stop genuine upstarts from going on a run. Someone like Seatoun is entering for some decent hitouts, not to advance through on a bye.

When there are more teams than slots, the default is that teams in premier leagues get the byes first.
if there are still more teams than slots once only premier league teams are considered, it is then on the basis of a random draw (which is an issue).
if they had just picked out 14 capital names from a hat containing 19, a scenario where all 10 central league teams played and the 5 byes went to the likes of naenae and wainui is possible, and that's definitely worse that what we have as it sits, where it's not quite the five 'best' teams having byes, but at least it's five of the top nine.

When there are more teams than slots, the default is that teams in premier leagues get the byes first - and then all the way down - the teams involved in the prelim round were all the lowest entrants, though gisborne thistle and a couple of aff/nff conference teams got unlucky, and navy get given a boost due to cup's naval origins.

they have not seeded the teams on a team by team basis, which would be ideal, yes. but they have seeded them on a league by league basis, which is better than a completely random mess.
and which is what sthn.jeff is referring to - the fa cup etc all seed by league, but just have so many teams that they never have the stupid situation NZF has run into (well done NZF!)
Capital Football have released the game times for the 13th May http://websites.sportstg.com/comp_info.cgi?a=ROUND...
