Joe Bell. Young enough to play again the the next U20 World Cup cycle. At college in states; wonder why he's not on a Nix contract?

Pretty sure he is quite academic, so he thought he'd get uni out of the way first. BTW think he's at a quite a prestigious college in the states

Runner up of group E (NZ most likely) will play against winner of group F which at the moment is USA.

Bell was great last night ended up with 2 assists, much better than Cameron and McGarry played really well as a wingback. Next game we must play Rogerson uptop with Bevan, maybe swap Ingham for JHS. Surley we play Lewis, Singh and Bell in the mid?

Man if that was an improvement from the first game we must have been shark in that first game. Surely there are some defenders in the country that are more comfortable on the ball, Woud looks more comfortable on the ball then the back 3.

Yes but those that are more comfortable on the ball aren't over 6 ft and playing in Auckland.

Hunter isn't in Auckland.

I'm not sure we can complain too much about defence, 1 goal against in 2 games due to an error is not bad.

Whilst they may not be able to play out from the back brilliant, do they have a better understanding of their game, positional play etc... and to be fair Hunter makes for a good target.

Good to see us getting such a comfortable win.  Man the Honduran keeper was honking though!

Ask Declan Edge if he has some coming through at Ole/Wests. Ole You Tube Channel has recent Central league, Chatham cup and Cap Prem matches.

I think you might have missed News's point which is that ball playing defenders are out there but they aren't in Auckland and aren't 6ft+ so don't get selected.

Liam Wood v. unlucky imho. But he's a ball-playing centre half who is only about 5'10 so doesn't fit the key criteria.

I think if you are looking ahead to the All Whites it is very unlikely that a 5'10 defender will ever make it.  Not easy for him, but I think that is the reality of the position

Cannavaro also had a freakishly good jump as well, not many guys his height would be able to leap as high as him I would guess.

Besides he was pants, got turned by a teenage Chris Wood in 2010. Pfffft ;)

We are going to make the second round... not matter what happens it will be painted as a success and a sign of our growth as a nation. Our win in NZ was simply down to hosting etc etc, but because we are growing.

Happy with Lewis leaving as it means I'm more likely to see Singh play.

Would expect that, USA only beat Honduras on penalties in the final.

I just had a look at the groups and the upcoming games and there is a real chance that in 5 of the groups the team finishing third will have 4 points the same as us.

If results fell against us, the worst goal diff for a team on 4 points would likely be Germany who have -1. So potentially, anything more than a 3 goal loss could see us drop out of the second round.

Obviously a lot of water to go under the bridge, but I thought we were all but certainties... but now i'm a tad nervous. Hopefully by game time Sunday we will be assured of a place.

Based on what I've seen of Honduras and what I've seen of Vietnam - I'd back Honduras to get the win.

But yeah, it's going to be tight. An Argentina win or a draw tonight will give us one third-placed team lower than 4, then only need 1 of the other 3 to break our way, if we need it at all. Will be one hell of a perfect storm.

Watching both of Vietnam's games, yeah they are quick and they have a lot of fight and passion, but I think they have too much fight.

Against France, they were just plain dirty. Against us, they were also very dirty, 28 fouls is quite a lot in a game.

I reckon France destroyed their confidence and I am backing Honduras to win on Sunday, which also happens to be the results NZ need to progress!

If Zambia beat Costa Rica, NZ advance

If Zambia and Costa Rica draw, NZ advance

If Costa Rica win, NZ must wait.

THEN

If Japan-Italy is won and lost, NZ advance

If Japan-Italy is drawn, NZ must wait

THEN NZ PLAY.

If NZ remains on 4, but gets dropped to third, because Vietnam wins with a decent GD swing

THEN

They could already have a good enough GD (unlikely) and advance

Or … they need the US to beat Saudi Arabia.

Or … they will need a combo of results that leaves them as one of the four best third placed teams.

No promises that any of that is true, it is 1.30am, after all.

The changes made by bringing in McGarry( who has played that position before) and Bell( who has played there before) were good decisions. Why we started game 1 with who we did was beyond me. but lets hope that Bazeley will stick with them now there.

Great win inspired by that magnificent strike by Bevan which rocked the opposition, but there were still long hoof ball tactics far too much for my liking, although they did mix it up far more than the previous match.

You ruined it chime. It was a win at the WC and all goals are worth the same amount and all avenues to goal are legitimate strategies. Get over your Barsa passing thru the thirds bullshark.

Did you read my post? Great win... etc? Having seen our last 17s play and progress, I remain disappointed at the current tactics, and that's my prerogative, as I am not a cheerleader but an interested observer.

While generally true that most of the best central defenders are 6 foot or more, there have been and continue to be, many world class central defenders who are well below six foot, such as Javier Mascherano 1.74 m (5 ft 81⁄2 in), Héctor Chumpitaz 1.68 m (5 ft 6 in), Daniel Passarella, Iván Córdoba 1.73 m (5 ft 8 in), Franco Baresi 1.76 m (5 ft 91⁄2 in), Gaetano Scirea, Carles Puyol, Roberto Ayala 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in) and José Santamaría 1.79 m (5 ft 101⁄2 in).

The captain of the great Peru team of the seventies, Chumpitaz was only 5ft 6 in but is considered one of the best South American defenders of all time.

Of NZ centre-backs, Ben Sigmund was only 5 ft 11 in

NZ will need to be fully up for the game against France. This France side is full of talented players, many of whom have already played at Ligue1 level. If we surrender 60/70% possession then France will score plenty of goals. It would be a shame for NZ to screw up their tournament with a heavy defeat against France.

I read the French press about the match. The French coach said they have studied the  NZ side and respect them as a team. They were impressed by NZ's organisation on defense and their athleticism. He said NZ had some good players and could score against France. They did say that NZ were not strong technically but France could not take this match for granted.

I hope Blazeley starts Rogerson. I don't see what Billingsley brings to the team. He does not really have the technical skills to be a target man and his lack of mobility is a liability...especially against quick sides. The NZ attack has looked much more fluid when Rogerson has come on.....he has quick feet and is technically far superior to Billingsley.

If NZ can keep the score close then they should progress. We are no longer the easy beats in these tournaments. Its a good sign of the development of NZ football at youth level
