Abuse of power: football’s culturally accepted contempt for its own referees

This is UK focused but I wonder on how much of it holds true here. What say you?

Wait. Just been told that there was a bit if an examination of this issue on here relatively recently. Hope this ain't doubling up.

I'm sure it is very similar in NZ. I have criticized refs from the sideline in the past  but have not abused them. Seems to be more prevalent in juniors.

Swearing etc is shocking and should be stamped out.

A friend who's not really a football fan watched part of the 'Nix game and saw Gameiro mouthing off and said 'That's not at the ref, is it?'

I thought Shaun Evans had a good control on the game yesterday, but also some more senior players from some teams have been able to get away with swearing at the refs.

In all the years of playing football I never once swore at a ref. The refs today are just wimps allowing players to swear at them - should be an automatic red.

I've questioned a few ref's decision's, sometimes probably a bit more than I should on the basis that we know they will never change their mind, however, I've never sworn at one.

As you say it needs to be stamped out

Speaking of contempt for referees, here we have a United fan tweeting his disgust to the FA simply because his team lost a game of football.

A genuinely pathetic fan base ladies and gentlemen.

Not sure what that has got to do with the original comment.

There are dick head fans in all clubs, including Woolwich.

Pretty poor effort mocking the fan base.

The reality is most players, coaches and spectators actual knowledge of the laws is poor - (my personal belief is that it is more often that not because of the rubbish they hear from tv commentators.)

At least, that's what i tell myself if i am running a line. I am lucky that my mental attitude is such that the rubbish that is said from behind me is water off my back; i know that many other refs struggle with this.

In the middle, it's easy to manage the game/players via a quiet word and then stepped approach, and i mentally block out the spectators tbh.

The people that get to me piss me off is the parents in youth games. (and one player, actually, who used the "C" word* against me  last season). That tends to make me angry, and stop enjoying what i am doing primarily for fun (& fitness).

Parents, Your kids may or may not be football gods in 10 years, but right now they need to know that their success will come from hard work, and trying to blame the ref for their mistakes, will not help their development. Also, stop trying to live your dreams through your children. No one will ask them if they won a particular game or not when they were 13; it's not relevant to their future success.
