That lady at the Olympics was a scarey as thing to see. I hope she recovers fully.

As a car driver, be careful out there you cyclists, I noted today as I was dropping my boy off to primary school that the village idiots in other cars were stepping up to the plate with some of the more inane driving I have seen for a long time. Not the sort of weather to bring the worst out in drivers, but it is. Be careful.

Can't see this sort of thing catching on here where motorists try their hardest to be a close as possible to cyclists when passing. It's like it's a competition or something.

"Undercover bike cops launch 'best ever' cycle safety scheme in Birmingham

Campaigners hope the operation, that sees plain clothes police on bikes pull over drivers that pass too close, will be taken up across the country"

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/bike-blog/...

Can you imagine the rage in NZ if they tried to introduce that scheme here?

You'd have riots and people in lyrca getting lynched.

I was in Mirimar the other day and saw a small truck right up the arse of a cyclist, flashing his lights, and laying on his horn. If the cyclist had an issue or panicked because of the pressure she would have been right under the trucks tires. She was as far left as she could get with the parked cars and the road was about to open up to two lanes in a couple of hundred metres, so at most the delay cost the truck driver seconds.

I really don't understand how or why people behave the way they do to cyclists, they wouldn't go around threatening people or trying to kill them outside of their vehicles but somehow it's acceptable in?

I filled in the complaint form on the police website but doubt they will do anything.

it really is mob mentality, because other people behave that way and its widely publicised others think that it's okay. But if they stopped to rationalise the risks they are taking I'm sure their behavior would change. They aren't just risking other peoples lives but jail time for themselves if it came to a manslaughter charge. All for a few seconds saved.

It's like those old anti piracy ad's, you wouldn't shop lift, etc. But in this case it's you wouldn't threaten to stab someone on the sidewalk if they didn't get out of your way

This is fantastic.

This should be done here.

It could cause some uproar as you predict, but so what, we need this, badly.

It's pretty obvious that a decent amount of drivers actually have no idea about these laws - some people seem to think that a cyclist is supposed to pull over or something, they just have no idea that the cyclist has the same rights as the motorist.

As someone said in a post afterward about the guy in the truck flashing his lights etc. Obviously that guy is completely uneducated on the road rules regarding cyclists, and for some messed up reason he thinks the cyclist is breaking rules and causing him grief unnecessarily. That is just staggering, such a lack of knowledge of the rules, and shows exactly why we need a seriously big campaign to try and sort this out.

Personally I am not a cyclist, and I do get very annoyed at bad cyclist behaviour, but I get more annoyed at bad motorist behaviour. I pride myself on my treatment of cyclists, I give them a tonne of space, and I am very cautious with my overtaking - I will wait and wait and wait until I know I've picked a safe time and place to do it. But other motorists will get angry at me for that! They might start to queue up behind me, getting sh*tty that I'm not overtaking, they will toot their horn or flash their lights, that just f*cks me off.

It does seem to be a normal thing for motorists to overtake cyclists on skinny roads, with vehicles coming the other way, which means you cannot possibly give the cyclist the necessary amount of room - that behaviour needs to be scrubbed out. A huge campaign would help big time. And as silly as it sounds, undercover cops on bikes is actually a pretty brilliant idea.

And one more thing, I must say there's not many things more satisfying than a thank you wave for good behaviour. Absolutely love cyclists who feed my ego like that.

They don't prevent the big injuries but I'm pretty sure my helmet has saved me from smaller ones, glass I've for one.

Yeah I slipped over once walking down the street and banged my head, I really wish there had been a law that made pedestrians wear helmets.

Also people who are in car crashes they could probably wear foam and plastic helmets too as I reckon they might help in a car crash.

Don't get me started on torsion injuries caused by helmets.

This is what the research is saying that helmets don't actually make any difference in preventing injury. What helmet laws do is piss people off so they don't ride bikes and that increases health risks.

Because I walk as fast as I cycle and other pedestrians are made out of metal and can smash into me at 50+ kmph.

Do you think before you post?

I'll tell you one thing, I've only had a couple small falls off my bike that my helmet saved me, probably saved me from a split scalp and the equivalent of a heavy nights drinking in dead braincells but I'm pretty sure my helmet saved me some serious trouble on the snowboard so I for one am glad that I wear it.

It might be that helmets prevent the small injuries, but the big injuries - like being hit by a truck on the open road are just too big for a helmet to be effective.

Car's have plenty of safety devices such as seat belts and air bags. If bikes had similar convenient safety features then you wouldn't need a helmet. But that, of course, is not possible.

I've read the studies that helmets cause more injuries, they say that because the helmet is bigger than your head that creates a bigger target to hit the road with - as if with the force of an impact big enough to cause an injury your head would magically travel a few centimetres less, or that drivers treat cyclists with helmets differently than cyclists without, which is just moronic. How on earth do you study that?

why are you hitting your head so much? I've done lots of MTBing (I'm not very good have scars none on my head),  road cycling, commuting, cycle-training, and I've never hit my head. I'm still I reckon approved to do cycle skills training. Even on black ice/piles of wet leaves it's hard to hit your head.

What are you doing?

Serious question as it's bloody hard to hit your head when falling off your bike. Really hard.

Piece on Stuff today discussing bike helmets.

Nice post mate!

I was trying to cross the road with wall to wall traffic and was standing there with my bike. This bloke slowed down so I could cross the road! I sort of went a bit mental and waved, gave thumbs up and almost broke into a "hey nonny nonny" type dance I was so touched by his kindness.

I nearly wiped out a cyclist last night. The fact it was on a road with very little lighting and he was wearing black on a bike with no lights and he wasn't wearing a helmut. I saw him only at the very last second. Phew, missed him. For every good intelligent cyclist, there has to be an idiot.

decided to purchase a second hand bike and start commuting from Lower Hutt. Took all of 15 minutes of my first ride for a driver to beep his horn as he had to wait as he passed in the narrow part of the road. Cod.

Why don't more drivers understand this?

I don't cycle, but I get other drivers beeping at me, because of how long I am waiting for a safe place to pass a cyclist!

F*cking does my head in.

Yes it's inconvenient sometimes, but just like speed limits, it's the rules, we have to share, I don't understand why people can't just deal with it. They may as well shake their fist at a 50km sign as it's equally as inconvenient.

It was especially weird because it was peak hour traffic so he has only fallen back about 100m and could easily catch up.

Yeah, I used to cycle but had to many problems so stopped. You get people passing you on a very dangerous position only to overtake them again ten seconds later.

wanganui is a great place to cycle but even here you get idiots that just have to come in close when they pass or give you a few verbals out the window, but over all they are in the minority. there are some dickhead drivers but there are also some dickhead cyclists.
