Ryan De Vries (Sligo Rovers | Éire)
Good move, the pace of the game should suit him. I look forward to seeing how he progresses.
will look forward to watching him while he is here
Correct me if I'm wrong, but thats a fantastic signing for NZ football
Just to clarify, they are a second division side.
I think it's good for DeVries himself as yes, it is the 2nd division in Japan, but it is miles away from the likes of the Handy Prem.
Not sure it benefits NZF much as DeVries isn't eligible as far as I know.
apparently played in 2015 according to stuff? Pleased for him
Yeah just read that. I must say I can't remember too well but feel like he wasn't called back up after the whole Olympics eligibility saga.

He's eligible - he's lived in NZ for 5 years after his 18th birthday. In fact his case was mentioned specifically as a reason NZF should have known Wynne wasn't eligible
Fantastic move. May be their second tier, but is a quality league where many of our A league kiwis would struggle.

De Vries played v South Korea; says SAFA never approached him to play for Bafana Bafana
Auckland City's Japanese defender Takuya Iwata went to middle and high school in Gifu and was on the books of FC Gifu, mainly playing for the B team 2006 - 2010, so it could well be that he had something to do with de Vries' move.
Iwata's details on Wikipedia:

FC Gifu finished 18th in the 22 team J-2 league last season but have finished 20th or 21st five of the last seven seasons.
The 21st and 22nd placed teams enter the promotion-relegation play-offs.
Star player is former Spain u-21, Valladolid, Osasuna winger Sisi (89 appearances in la Liga, 228 in the Segunda Division):

Manager Takeshi Oki, new for the 2017 season, had only previously managed top flight J-League clubs and was assistant to the Japan national team 2007-10. Best sequence at Kyoto Sanga 2011, 2012, 2013 seasons P:122 W:60 D:22 L:40

That is the talk over here. Likely to make his debut tomorrow
made his debut. Played 10 minutes of the bench and by reports ive heard of the game he played well. Just looked short on match fitness
Started latest game and subbed after 69 mins. Gifu were down 2-3 at that point and lost 3-4.
Started and 61 mins before being subbed, in a 0-0 draw against Toyota Verdy last week.
To date 6 appearances (4 starts, 2 as a sub) - no goals as yet.
a few comments from him

Unused sub in a 2-1 win. Hasn’t played in a few weeks now.
Started in a 2-0 win over Matsumoto Yamaga last weekend. Subbed after 60 mins, when score was 0-0.
His replacement scored Gifu's 2nd goal.
De Vries still yet to break his goal scoring duck.
To date 9 games with 6 starts.
Gifu are 16th out of 22 teams in the J2 league.
Started and 56 mins before being subbed in a 1-2 loss to Oita Trinita.
Score 1-1 when subbed off.
Played the full game today in a 2-0 win.
Got a wonderful back heel assist for the first goal.
Is he now eligible for AWs?
Playing at much higher level than say Myer Bevan. If admittedly not scoring goals that he was in Handy Prem.
90 mins in a 2-1 win.
Still searching for that first goal, but plenty of playing time.
Is he eligible for AWs?
Not at this stage from what I understand - he was one caught up in eligibilty issues when they looked back post Olympics - not sure what needs to happen for him to be deemed ok
This article suggests that he is indeed eligible.
Got 80 mins in a 4-0 win but still that first goal proves elusive.
Gifu knocked out of the Emperors Cup by fellow J2 side Montedio Yamagata on penalties.
Still no goals for de Vries.
Gifu had a 1-2 home loss on weekend to lie 11th on J2 table.
De Vries hasn't featured in a match day squad since 2nd June. Presume injured?
He hadn't been scoring goals, but been a match day regular up to that point.
can comfirm he is injured should be back soon
Returns from injury, and played 63 mins before being subbed as Gifu (11th) beat Ventforet Kofu (12th) 3-1 away.
Still yet to score for Gifu. Score was 1-1 when subbed, and guy who replaced him was one of Gifu's scorers.
Subbed at HT as Gifu lost 3-0 to Yokohama.
Score was 2-0 at HT.
Sorry. Wrong thread
Scores his first goal for Gifu in a 2-3 home loss.
Plays first half in a 1-0 loss. First J2 appearance for awhile.
Gifu are 6 pts above relegation zone with 11 games to go.
Played 90 mins last week in a 4-1 loss.
Was his first J2 game in over a month.
Gifu one place above the relegation zone with 6 rounds remaining.
