So he wants half a million in a month via $2 contributions. Does he know that if he does not hit the goal, it does not go live?? Seems like a lot of money...

I know Milts reasonably well and he knows that.

As he says in his preview he has biffed everything he has behind this but the final amount is too big for a man with a young family and a job that won't earn him millions.

It seems a viable way of trying to drum up support and a profile for a project he is incredibly passionate about.

Not denying that but as Patrick said, when you know the target is out of reach and wont get funded, people will not fund it. Thus all it really is, is a PR campaign. He'll never get the cash because it wont get funded.

There needs to be smarter execution I think.

HI there, would love to hear which tactic I could use instead?

Three TV networks turned me down because they're not interested in football.  Film Commission won't give me money because I haven't had a film released before.  All mainstream funding options are closed doors, so I've instead turned to the football community and the wider public for some support and help.

I'm under no illusions how fickle people can be with things like this - and maybe I am on a hiding to nothing.  But I'm passionate about this project, I want to see it on screens so people can share in it, and when key broadcasters euphemistically tell me the sport I love is not worth their time, I get extra motivated.

Totally cool if you don't want to contribute - but it'd be awesome if you could forward my links on to everyone you know as some of them may want to chip in.  And as I said, would love to hear any other options you can suggest for raising money.

Cheers

Milts.

Why not take the more optimistic view, that, should somehow it reach the goal, then there will be an amazing outcome, and one can be part of helping it happen?

If it doesn't reach its goal, then one hasn't made any payment and isn't any worse off.  As a bonus, one has given an indication of the level of support there is for the project, which could be used for perhaps leveraging other ways of making this documentary available to the public.

I can't see what anyone has to lose by making a modest pledge to this project.

It does seem unless some wealthy people with money to spare come forward, then it's unlikely to reach it's target just from the odd dollar from the likes of us on this forum.

Perhaps a tiered approach would work better such as three or four staggered Kickstarter campaigns to fund different stages of the project e.g. $100,000 each stage.

Does Kickstarter allow that?

Financing film projects has usually proved difficult in NZ (except if it's a Hollywood production):

I recently very much enjoyed the insightful extras on the DVD release of Roger Donaldson's classic NZ film "Sleeping Dogs" which was made on the smell of an oily rag and reluctantly funded as a tax right-off by a couple of prominent NZ businessmen:

"The director of Sleeping dogs, Roger Donaldson, had learned his craft making television commercials. Funding a feature proved so demanding that Donaldson once gave the entire cast and crew an unexpected two-day break in the middle of shooting. He then went and made a television advertisement to ensure that everyone got paid that week."

...First assistant Tom Binns turns to director of photography Mike Seresin. "Could I borrow your hat?" he asks, indicating the floppy American forage cap Mike is wearing.

"Sure, what do you want it for?"

Tom points to a small group of locals standing some distance away, enjoying the scene. "I thought I might pass it round to help the ailing budget."

(NZ Listener, 1976)

Large hats are essential:

Sure

Let me clear, I am not knocking your project at all, just maybe your method of getting funding. I don't think Kickstarter is the way because the generalisation of the demographic that use Kickstarter is younger. Your captive audience is going to be more than likely older because some young folk associate more with the class of '10 and that world cup so they don't give a fuck about '82 other than they charged our young guys $2k to play for NZ age group teams. For the older folk, they worry about that kind of 'on-line thing' - I can tell you cause some of my mates are like that and don't get simple on-line buying let alone crowd sourced funding. You are also looking at a compressed time period for raising that kind of cash with a niche topic for the wider Kickstarter community and then asking those not on there, to tune into it.

You seem like a smart guy and passionate about this. I admit though that going down this avenue is smart, just wondered if you could have set a lower target to get a better chance of buy in. It seems like you are getting a few stonewalls in your face which is understandable, but unfortunate. I do hope you get success in this and as much as it looks like I have poo pooed it, can I suggest the following avenues which may help you - you may or may not have tried them.

1: Email every ASBP club (or do this in winter and hit as many winter clubs as you can). Get inches in their programme. As you said, you are looking to the wider football community. I don't think you would get knocked back if you asked to put a piece in their programmes about this. This target the fans that are tuned in now and not on this message board

2: It seems the networks are not interested. Have you gone to the people in media that are football friendly and have a voice? Gordon Glen-Watson, Martin Devlin, Miles Davis, both Holloways, Niall and Ian Anderson, Tony Smith. Can these people help you with exposure to the public via their channels in the press (and I guess you can throw in Jason Pine, Andrew Gourdie and the 'In the Zone' podcast folk) These people are football positive and it will give them a fluff piece midweek to fill inches or airwaves when the football news is dry. For you, it created momentum and exposure. Ricki van Steeden is a producer/director at Sky. Can he help?

3: If Kickstarter falls over then you don't get the cash. People will still want to donate however. Some people have an unbearable need to see where their money is going and how it tracks regardless how little that donation is. What's your avenue for keeping people informed if the Kickstarter campaign does not work? Have you asked for a webpage you can update with how the project is tracking both from a financial point of view and also a progress point of view. How can they see a 'target cash pile' (like those funding thermometers)? How can they see the progress and what their donation is buying? Can the YF guys donate a page to you to set up? Some people will not donate if they don't hear anything for 2-3 years for this project to come live (again I have no idea what time frame you are looking at). The Ronald McDonald thing on this forum works cause people can see the results every week so they have relevant and 'now' buy in. Some people need that.

Hope those suggestions are helpful.

One last thing that just came to me. Go the Wyntons, FVH, FDJ, BTs and ask them with their connections if they know people that will donate/sponsor/support. Its all about them and I am sure they would love to see it come to life. FVH is a high roller at BP. He would know some mofos that may help with coin or what ever.

Would the 82 Team that played Scotland beat the current Team? Would the 82 beat the 2010 Team? If you can answer ill donate a Tenner..!

sorry for late reply - in my humble opinion, 82 team could probably beat current side, but not 2010 side... both teams had excellent players, but I think the professionals in the 2010 team would sway it their way... but of course, impossible to compare generations like that!!  that said, a number of the 82 side would slot into the 2010 side seamlessly...

What about contacting OFC and/or FIFA?... surely they have funds available for promoting the game - which this programme would, particularly in a "developing" market where football isn't the number one sport.

My very best wishes to Steve Sumner who has been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of prostate cancer:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/football-soccer/news/article.cfm?c_id=86&objectid=11518501&ref=rss

Hope he recovers okay.

Good advice from him there about getting a regular check-up for prostate problems if over 40.

I'll be doing that. Never had it done before.

Steve's a top bloke.

I'll never forget the time he stopped to chat with me and my mate at a Football Kingz NSL game at Lancaster Park in Christchurch in about 2001- 2002 season.

He arranged for us to attend the after-match with the players and staff. Just two ordinary supporters.

One of my best-ever football experiences to meet the All Whites in the Kingz team etc.

"All Whites 82" by John Matheson & Sam Malcomson (with foreword by Zico)

mint paperback review copy

Contains unique insights, e.g. these two by Adrian Elrick v Brazil:  "There was a bit of injury time because I'd agreed to pretend injury so Doug Edwards could get on the field. It was worth $10,000 to him because he had signage on the side of his medical bag and if it got on TV he'd receive a payment. So I lay down and he comes on."   ... and "I had Zico's shirt. I was offered $30,000 for it after the game."

I just noticed that two of FIFA's "Top 100 Brazil Goals" of all time are from their match vs. the All Whites at the 1982 finals.

Both by Zico:

No. 14: the famous bicycle kick:

No. 88 wasn't bad either:

An application was lodged recently with the NZ Sports Hall of Fame to induct the 1982 All Whites in 2017 (35th anniversary of their appearance in Spain).  But the panel of 9 annoucned yesterday that they have deemed it not worthy of induction...

Irrespective of what you think of the team or certain individuals who were part of it, this is sad.

Have a look at who has already been inducted, some great names there. I noticed that no World Cup winning rugby teams are in there and the medal winning men's hockey team from 76 is. I'm imagining that whoever oversees this Hall of Fame doesn't think qualifying for a world cup is a sufficiently big enough achievement.

Initially, I thought that if there are only a small number of very select inductees, then fair enough - but on checking, they have 182 inductees, many of them very obscure to the general public (unless you follow a particular sport like wrestling or wood chopping), so there's no excuse for not including the '82 All Whites in my opinion. It is called the "Hall of Fame" and the '82 All Whites, although being a 34 year old team are still famous in NZ (and even amongst football followers in Australia).

The '87 World Cup-winning All Blacks are actually in there near the top of the list of 182:

http://www.nzhalloffame.co.nz/Inductees.aspx

Two footballers are in the Hall of Fame - Wynton of course  - and the rather obscure Marilyn Marshall (who I'd never heard of until reading her name there). An athlete must be retired for at least five years before inclusion, so one day Ryan Nelsen and Winston Reid should be in there.

The '82 All Whites should definitely be in there ahead of Marilyn Marshall (and there are Football Ferns of the last decade who should eventually be in there ahead of Marshall). Marshall captained NZ at both women's football and softball but played in no FIFA finals and her best in softball was third at the world championship.

Induction of footballers is always going to be hard, depending on an induction panel who probably have little knowledge of or interest in football: "Inductions are decided by a panel of nine comprising three inductees, three representatives of sports and three members of the news media."

Worth it for people to keep nominating the 1982 All Whites though I feel until you strike a more informed induction panel.

Morning all - I know I've been here before, but I'm having one last shot at getting my documentary project crowd funded so I can release it... I've set up a Boosted page, so if you feel like chipping in a couple of dollars that'd be awesome - here's the link if you want to check it out:

https://www.boosted.org.nz/projects/82-and-all-tha... (I've chosen Boosted as donators are entitled to tax rebates, and donations are returned with no charges if target isn't reached - so win-win :) )

If you've got any questions, don't hesitate to ask.  If you want to forward this info to others, please do!  If you want to criticise, deride or dismiss, feel free :)

This film will only see light with the support of the football community - so if you could spare the cost of a coffee before February 6th, that'd be great!
