For the 2026 cycle how many competitive matches will NZ have to play?. No competitive Matches until 2024 ofc nations cup?.

If we have an OFC Nations’ Cup it’ll be: 3 group, semi, final (5); and then, assuming the keep the same format as 2018, 4 second round (h/a in three team group based on placing in Nations’ Cup group stage), top in each group will play each other h/a and winner qualifies. That’d make 11, but on the high chance NZ doesn’t do the Nations’ Cup, 6.

They could also change the format, unlikely, but you never know. Could give all teams, even the 4 weakest teams who typically play-off for one spot, passage past the NC, so they don’t lie dormant for four years after having only 3 games. That would give 5 and 6 team groups, so 8/10 games plus h/a final. Or just go all in CONMEBOL style, 20 matches h/a in league style, top goes to the WC, would be fun.

So lowest would be 6, likely to be 11, small chance it’s as many as 17.

Who you have a free 60 mins, this is a really interesting behind the scenes doco on the Socceroos and their win over Uruguay in 2005 playoffs, to get to 2006 Germany WC, their first World Cup in 32 years.

Poppa had one of the Uruguayans by the throat in the tunnel, about to run on the pitch!!  No time for playing nice. This is after many of the same Aussie players had been spat at, and man handled by some Uruguay 'fans' arriving Montevideo Airport in 2001 Playoff series. Some of the Socceroos speaking about the heartbreak of losing that '01 series - something the AWs will be feeling now.

Maybe a NZ broadcaster will do doco on the 2009 All Whites one day.

I remember being very pleased for them when they qualified in 06. There were so many good Australian players around that time that missed out in 98 and 02, they were completely deserving of going through in 06.

Yes is an excellently made doco, captures the despair of all their failed campaigns previous, and euphoria of that night perfectly. Have a good Aussie mate married to a Kiwi (lives in Plimmerton and plays Masters for Wests) - who says it's still the best moment of his life being at Homebush that night. Their Bahrain game.

Such a pity these huge games are basically over with. Though of course they suck when you lose.

Couple of tidbits with 2nd viewing. Australia booking all the LATAM business class flights that left day the Uruguayans flew from Montevideo to Sydney - forcing them to have to book economy seats!! Even though the Socceroos themselves had a private chartered Qantas jet. Oh to have Frank Lowry's cash!

Near the end of ET, Hiddink was preparing to sub on Zalac for Schwarzer, for the pen shootout. But then Emerton cramped up, had to come off and Aussies had no subs left. Graham Arnold was Hiddink's assistant. What happens in a Playoff shootout 17 years later?!

The presence of master coach 'Aussie Gus' who had been there done that with Sth Korea amongst other teams, gave Socceroos a massive confidence boost that this was their time at last after 32 years of pain. He almost portrayed a laid back arrogance that Australia were destined to win. I guess AWs on the other hand have relied on their hugely experienced EPL stars Nelsen and Reid/Wood, to give them the confidence that they belong on that stage.

Oh and nice to see Michael Cockerill a few times in the doco. Quality journo, lovely guy and good friend of NZ football. RIP

Another cool tidbit in the doco, is a yarn from ex Matildas' head coach Alen Stajcic. He's sitting down next to a guy who is very quiet through the game. So quiet Stajcic thinks he must be a Uruguayan fan, amongst the loud Aussie throng.

Then Mark Bresciano scores to make the 2 legged tie 1-1. The 'Uruguayan fan' grabs Stajcic's leg, and just says 'that's my son'. Pretty cool little yarn about a Aus-Italian immigrant proud of his boy. Brecciano's dad & 2 brothers were all tilers in Melbourne.

Socceroos go on to win of course in the pen shootout.

Kevin Falloon on the other hand wouldn't have been able to be incognito at the ROF in 2009.

It's just do defeating.  A loss is a loss but we got fudgeed here.

Our red was a red but they elbowed our player in the head s few seconds later.  Nothing.  Studs up tackle late in the game from Costa Rica.  Nothing.

Costa Rica blatant time wasting, fouling and diving all game.  Ref only starts yellowing too late in the game.

Our goal was a fudgeing goal.  Chalked off foul a foul that was instigated by Costa Rica and then their player blatantly dives.

Bull shark of the highest order.

We scored as many legit goals in this game as they did but lost because of bad officiating.

These fouls were obvious to us in the stadium watching on from behind the other goal.  How the officials missed them beggars belief or else implies corruption.

Today hurts. It stings. I'm really grumpy.

But a reality check of what being robbed in a WC playoff is really like. 'Hand of Frog'. FYI - Ireland haven't been at a WC since 2002 (been there 3 times in total)

Snap! Hadn’t read your comment.
Hope the Flying Kiwis who made it to the game are partying it up and getting a whole lot of catharsis.

We went to the Intercontinental to party up but given the bad calls and £10 pints, was a bit of a downer night.

Beginning to think the reason I was so philosophical was because I was half asleep. Not always the beautiful game huh.
Look, that was a huge performance. We were dominant, we attacked, we gave it our all. While I’ve watched All White teams with better results, that was maybe the best performance overall from an All White team I’ve seen. Imagine if we played more consequential games at a decent level.
Lots of respect for Navas. He really calmed his team with wave after wave of attack. Revved them up or came for the ball and punched late on to take the sting out of the ball bobbling around the box.
The highlights are a tough watch. A lot of things that could have fallen for us didn’t.

Come bring myself to watch highlights yet. But Navas seemed a master of manipulating the inexperienced ref. Him and the other Ticos surround the ref post Wood’s ‘goal.’  Navas the cod gives Libby a huge back shove. I’m sure him and his mates were yelling VAR.

Then earlier when Tuiloma is similarly fouled in the lead up to their goal, AWs just wander back to half way shell shocked. You create scene and VAR is far more likely to have a look. Sorry but that’s when Winnie, Tuiloma and others should have been all around the ref, saying check VAR not when Kosta got his red.

As the Aussie Guardian writer said we were too nice. Need to get smarter with that unsavoury stuff in big games, but again just highlights our lack of experience and nous with that stuff being stuck in OFC. Nice guys come 2nd in these cut throat, incredibly tight internationals. Bring the sharkhousery aka Redmayne

Yes they were. Navas is a cod.

I have to agree with the 'too nice' sentiment and having a do-or-die mentality in these matches.

Canada has gotten better talent, but I think one of the biggest factors that has helped us qualify is that the team has great unity and we are an absolute gang. There were post-match altercations in (I think) six matches in the last two years. That's dangerous with CONCACAF officiating, but we will absolutely not take any shark from anyone any more. We will play the "game within the game" as well as anyone.

Prime example of all of this is this piece of sharkhousery from Doneil Henry against Panama. I think he is probably technically off the grass. But he's clearly in the wrong. He's clearly messing with the corner kick taker and he's clearly not moving until one of the officials tells him to. Doneil's a central defender and he is top of the list of Canadian players I wouldn't pick a fight with. He's not being subbed in unless there's an injury and this is in the middle of the first half. There's probably no reason for him to even be there... One of the first players on scene is Alphonso Davies. Speaks to his mentality to. And once Phonzie is in there, everyone else gets in to make sure he doesn't pick up a needless caution.

https://twitter.com/KristianJack/status/1509290606891347979

I know this is all a bit childish, but we were down 1-0 when this happened and won 4-1. As the tweet says we won 7 out of the next 8 after this. I think these moments and the way we all back each other has truly been a big factor for us.

Even just seeing the anthems in the playoff... it told a story right?

Which isn't to diminish an excellent and unlucky All Whites performance. My condolences on how things worked out.

Thanks Juneof86. Really enjoyed your input, and yeah bring on the sharkhousery. Though it's always a bit easy to do antics like the above in front of your home fans.

Not that it will needed as we cakewalk through a H&A OFC qualifying series 2025-26 to make the bloated 48 team WC. But we were a bit too timid against the Ticos, which just shows a mostly young team with almost no experience of big WC qualifying games. We let them too easily boss the ref.

Actually I read that Gallese's water bottle that Redmayne threw away, had the Peruvian keeper's notes on the Socceroos pen takers taped to it!!  Very smart sharkhousery from the Aussies intended or not!

Good luck Canada in Qatar. I'll be cheering for them.

I heard somewhere that Michael Jordan and Shaq would invent a beef or a slight by some opposition players to get them fired up and motivated for their games. Determined not lose to x because of y.

Probably doesn’t help being away from home and not having the 40 thousand cheering for you.

The 2019 ODI Cricket World Cup final is a good analogy. Stayed up through the night to watch that. Both results sucked!

Good on Nick Robinson for watching the playoff again in depth. I couldn't. Definition of masochism right there.

https://theniche-cache.com/football/2022/7/6/reliving-the-trauma-of-the-all-whites-loss-to-costa-rica

Aotearoa had five starters aged 23 or younger and only two older than 30. Costa Rica had two under 23 and five over 30. There was more than three years between the average ages of the two starting line-ups. But it’s nothing compared to the chasm between the cap totals of the respective starters.

The age gap was stark. The cap gap is jaw-dropping...

All Whites starting XI by caps:
4, 32, 9, 34, 10, 68, 6, 10, 21, 10, 8
Total caps = 212

Costa Rica starting XI by caps:
107, 28, 151, 68, 7, 72, 6, 117, 12, 74, 72
Total caps = 714

Little moments across the course of a football game, not enough went the way of the All Whites. Some of that was beyond their control but enough of it wasn’t and you can’t help but feel that this game perhaps came a year too soon for this group. They still
could have won. They maybe still should have won. But give them a year or two’s further development and they would have won.
