Sanga (9th in the J League) win 1-0, at fellow J League team Shimizu S-Pulse (16th) in the Emperor's Cup 3rd round.

Woud in goal
https://us.soccerway.com/matches/2022/06/22/japan/emperor-cup/shimizu-s-pulse/kyoto-sanga/3792072/

The Emperor's Cup seems to be the most prestigious cup comp in Japan, with the winner qualifying for the AFC Champions League. So a good sign that Woud was in goal for the game.

Sanga will travel to J2 team Tochigi in the next round (Round of 16) in July.

Love a bit of Emperor’s Cup footy. This competition has been Michael Woud’s time to shine, playing in each of the last three rounds including the latest match-up, midway through last week, away to Togichi.

Hell of a game too. Kyoto Sanga scored in the sixth minute via Yuta Toyokawa as he bounced through one tackle and then squeezed his shot beyond the goalie. Woud then made a great close-out save twenty mins later however the equaliser did come on 36’ as Ko Miyazaki headed down a cross from out wide. 1-1 and despite being drawn against a J2-League club this one was balanced on a pinpoint with a place in the quarters on the line.

Woud made another good stop parrying away a hard effort aimed at the roof of his net early second half. Keeping his team in the match to where they were able to pounce right at the end. Third minute of stoppage time. More than once keeping the play alive through their hustle and finally drilling a low cross along the six yard box where Origbaajo Ismaila was there to touch it home. Big drama right at the end. Get in there. Michael Woud still hasn’t appeared in a J-League match (with 12 unused subs apps) but he’ll have an Emperor’s Cup quarter-final on the cards in a few more weeks.

Up Next: Forget about the J-League, the next Emperor’s Cup tie is a quarter-final against either Tokyo Verdy or Jubilo Iwata at 10pm on Weds 7 August (NZT)

"We would like to inform you that today's 2022 Meiji Yasuda J1 League Round 25 Kawasaki Frontale vs Kyoto Sanga FC (Kick off at 19:00 at Todoroki Athletics Stadium) has been canceled due to Typhoon No.
We will inform you about the alternative date as soon as it is decided."

Typhoon says No football today...

From the weekend.

Kyoto Sanga (14th) hosted Cerezo Osaka (4th). With 2 games left Kyoto re only 1 pt above the drop zone. Maybe Woud becomes the no 1 keeper if they got relegated and current first choice GK moved on.

https://us.soccerway.com/matches/2022/10/29/japan/j1-league/kyoto-sanga/cerezo-osaka/3736152/

Edit - a 0-0 draw for Kyoto. No Woud in match day squad.
Adam Taggart with 20 mins off the bench for Osaka.

Kyoto drop into the relegation playoff spot (16th), 1 point behind Gamba Osaka (15th & 36 pts), and 2 pts ahead of Shimizu S-Pulse (17th & 33 pts).

So it all comes down to the last round next week.
Kyoto (35 pts) are away to last placed Júbilo Iwata (18th), who are already relegated.

So Kyoto Sanga (16th) draw 0-0 at Júbilo Iwata final round of J1 season.
No Woud in match day squad.

Result leaves Kyoto Sanga in the relegation playoff spot.

Is a promotion playoff tomorrow between J2 sides Roasso Kumamoto & Montedio Yamagata. Kyoto to play the winner of that game in a one off pro/rel playoff.

Kyoto Sanga have their playoff opponent confirmed as J2 side Roasso Kumamoto.

Elsewhere, unfortunately that king cod Kevin Muscat salvages his coaching reputation (after getting sacked at Libby's Belgian club S-T), as Yokohama F. Marinos win the J League title.

Same club that Ange Pot won the title with a few years back.

Finished 1-1.

No ET played, so assume that result was enough for Kyoto to retain their J1 status, ie Kumamoto needed to win to get promoted?

Woud not in match day squad.

From Flying Kiwis.

Woud didn’t play because Kyoto Sanga have about four senior first team goalies and he seems to be either the second or third choice. But it’s still very relevant to point out that KS were able to hang in there for a 1-1 draw against Roasso Kumamoto in their Relegation Playoff. A draw was enough to keep them in the top flight for another season. Relegation avoided... eventually.

Sanga scored first through Yuta Toyokawa in the 39th minute and they began the second half looking like they were about to bag another. But they didn’t, and then Osamu Henry Iyoha equalised in the 68th heading in off the post from a corner kick. Luckily Sanga saw it out from there. Didn’t have a lot of possession but for the next twenty minutes they restricted their opponents from anything notable.

There was still injury time on top of those twenty minutes though, during which Roasso Kumamoto sent everyone forward and it took a block to the face of a KS defender to prevent one shot before the next smashed off the post. That effort right there was the difference between relegation/promotion for these two teams. Such fine margins. But Kyoto Sanga came out on top so they’ll be back in the J-League in 2023.

Michael Woud never played a league game this year despite sitting on the bench 17 times. The 23 year old did make seven appearances across the various cup competitions with a run all the way to the Emperor’s Cup semi-finals gave him plenty of room to manoeuvre. Naoto Kamifukumoto played the majority of games. Tomoya Wakahara also made seven appearances (four in the league, three in the cups). As with most of the squad, Kamifukumoto and Wakahara’s contracts expire in January whereas Woud’s runs through until the end of 2024. Chances are there were a lot of club/player options involved which depended on whether or not they avoided relegation. Now that’s been sorted, we should start to see some player retaining movement.

Woud not in match day squad as Kyoto Sanga start the J League season by hosting Kashima Antlers. So looks like Woud is no 3 keeper at best to start the season. Loan deal to a J2 team?

See that Kyoto have signed a new 30 yr old Dutch/Surinam keeper (Warner
Hahn), who is on the bench for this game. Hahn was with Ryan Thomas at Zwolle back in 2014/15. Anyway all the more reason for Woud to seek a loan deal I reckon. Though now he has someone to practice his Dutch with

Kyoto Sanga travel to Nagoya Grampus Eight. KO 8pm NZ time

https://us.soccerway.com/matches/2023/02/25/japan/j1-league/nagoya-grampus-eight/kyoto-sanga/4025371/

Looks a bit grim for Woud at Kyoto if they sign a 30 yr Dutch keeper with a much better CV (7 seasons & 131 games in the Everdivisie), than 24 yr old Woud. They can't see much of a future for Woud at the club, if they have used a visa spot on another keeper??

23 yr old Japanese GK Wakahara started their first game last weekend, so unless Woud is injured he looks down the list. Wakahara and Woud shared the no 2 GK spot last season. Woud 17 times on the bench in J1, Wakahara 13 times on the pine in J1. The no 1 keeper last season Kamifukumoto has moved to Kawasaki Frontale.
