Great opportunity for Henry Gray here as he gets loaned out to Chelmsford City in the National League South (6th tier).

Likely to see some good first team minutes due to a serious injury to their regular #1 - Although nothing's ever a given in football, so he'll still have to keep working hard.

But from following his progress since he's been over there it sounds like he is absolutely smashing his time in the UK.

Good luck to the kid. 👏👏

Good to see another Kiwi keeper coming through in the UK.
We've certainly never had so many Kiwi keepers playing professionally over there before.
Mark Paston played three seasons in the UK 2003 - 2006 with Bradford, Walsall and St Johnstone and I can't think of any Kiwi keepers playing threre professionally before him, nor any after him until more recent years.

Flying Kiwis and some more stuff on Henry Gray. Must be in contention to be one of the 3 keepers for Paris next year.

These are fantastic times to be involved with Ipswich Town as the Tractor Boys continue to charge onwards in the English Championship, currently sitting top of the pops after another win midweek. It’s looking very much like they’ll be playing Premier League next season. Yup, NZ U20s goalie and former Wellington Phoenix/Waterside Karori prospect Henry Gray has found himself in a pretty sweet spot there.

But football clubs run deep and while Gray has been staying busy with the Ipswich U21s since joining the club earlier in the year you don’t go turning down a chance to play first team football at 18 years of age. So for the next wee while he’s going to be a Chelmsford City player, joining the National League South club (sixth tier) on an emergency loan after a long-term injury to their regular starter left them short on numbers.
WELCOME HENRY!

We are delighted to announce the loan signing of Henry Gray, from Ipswich Town!

The 18-year-old joins and is available for tomorrow's game against Oxford!

Hear Robbie Simpson's thoughts on the signing, over on our website 👇#WelcomeHenry #ClaretsTogether— Chelmsford City FC (@OfficialClarets)
Chelmsford City manager Robbie Simpson: “Obviously with the unfortunate injury to Josh Oluwayemi, in which it seems that he will be out for some time, we wanted to act pretty quickly ahead of the festive period and wanted to have 2 keepers in. Jacob has stepped in and done ever so well but we have had Henry training with us a couple of times now and we really like him as a person, obviously knowing Finley Barbrook very well, and he looks to have all the attributes to be a top, top keeper. He is highly regarded at Ipswich and Carl Pentney, who we know very, very well, said that he is ready for this next stage in his development and playing men’s football. Carl thinks that he will be more than capable at being a very good keeper at this level. We are very happy to get Henry added to the side and look forward to seeing him between the sticks!”

Love that. Particularly the “highly regarded at Ipswich” line. For the record, Finley Barbrook is the captain of the Ipswich U21s and has been on load at CC for a month already. Carl Pentney is the Ipswich Academy goalkeeping coach and he had multiple spells at Chelmsford City during his career.

It sounds like Gray had already been with the squad for a few sessions before the loan was confirmed – Chelmsford is less than an hour’s drive from Ipswich – and in fact he’s already made his debut since this move happened. Got the start in an Essex Senior Cup fourth round fixture against Redbridge, a game in which they drew 2-2 after regular time with Redbridge converting a penalty equaliser deep into stoppage time. Then Redbridge won 4-3 in the shootout to advance. Gray did save one of the kicks in the shootout but his teammates couldn't capitalise.

This was an alternative non-league cup so we’ll see if this is a hint that he’ll be playing league games as well or whether he’s being seen more as a backup. Be aware that they did make ten changes for this match. Chelmsford City are eighth out of 24 teams in the National League South so a promotion playoff is absolutely within their realms.

Chelmsford go 2 from 2 with Henry in goal.

2 clean sheets, 6 points.

A decent festive period for Chelmsford, who now face the same rival at home in the new year.

A bit of a random one, but having a look through some teams and websites from those in the National League and it seems centre-back Noa Prestel (formerly of Christchurch United & FC Twenty 11) is with Weymouth FC in the National League South - The same division as the aforementioned Henry Gray.

Don't know if its an ongoing thing or not, or if he's been around the first team since he's been there, but he has managed several appearances with their U23 side who play in the Hampshire Combination & Development Football League.

Still pretty good travelling for Henry Gray at Chelmsford City, who are still to concede a goal in the league since his arrival.

Another 3-0 win over local rivals Braintree town helps see his side up to 6th (playoff positions) in the National League South - 12 points off Yeovil Town who do have a game in hand.

All in all, good signs for the lad and invaluable experience too as he looks toward building a solid career in the UK. He couldn't have asked for better start to be fair.

All chugging along very nicely for Henry Gray in his loan move at Chelmsford City.

10th when he joined the club before their latest ascent up the table. They're now sitting in 3rd.

Yeovil Town still 15 points ahead in 1st though, so probably a bridge too far to catch them, even with 20 games left in the season.

Yes only 1st get automatically promoted to the National League (5th tier), and that looks odds on being Yeovil Town. Chelmsford City though looking good for the promotion playoffs (spots 2nd-7th).

4 teams get relegated from the National League. Up go winners National League North & National League South - plus 2 more teams via the playoffs.

Shaping as a tight battle between Gray, Scott Morris & Kees Sims to back up Alex Paulsen at the Paris Olympics. 3rd keeper to go maybe as a travelling reserve.

Lawton Green has been trialling with Scottish League One side Queen of South.

Has no idea on the contract situation over there as it stands, but I have been told there is potentially a move abroad in the offing.

Will keep ya's posted.

As his old man says, that's now 7 clean sheets in 10 league outings for young Henry Gray after their 3-0 win this morning.

Turning in to a really good loan move for the young lad.

Wonder if Chelmsford win promotion if they'd look to get him in again next season? Long way to go of course. Yeovil still clear at the top so if they are to win promotion it's looking likely that it will have to be via the playoffs anyway.

Chelmsford City beat top of the table Yeovil Town to close that lead at the top to 12. 🤏

But more importantly, that's 8 clean sheets in 12 for young Henry Gray since joining on loan from Ipswich Town. Great loan move for the kid. Definitely helps he's playing for the form team of the league too, but those are some seriously good numbers.

12 games left in the season, plus the likely promotion playoff matches to come too.

I'd be surprised if he stays at Ipswich after this season.

Based on those numbers there will be more than a few clubs thinking he's worth a spot as a starter in goal in the lower leagues - if not one or two bigger teams, who potentially take him on as a top prospect.

8 clean sheets out of 12 is crazy!

If Chelmsford win promotion to the National League (which is a pretty good shout based on form) I reckon Ipswich will send him back on loan for next season.

Steps up a tier. Dogfight of a league, so he'll learn some pretty decent lessons along the way, and he'll only be turning 20 towards the backend of next campaign too. I'd think Ipswich would be more than happy with such an arrangement.

After a few calls for Auckland FC to take a look at him and some decent appearances for the NZ U23s, it seems Campbell Strong is on the way to English 8th tier side Stalybridge Celtic. Can't lie and say it's not a bit underwhelming

He's back here in NZ playing with Eastern Suburbs for the next little while. Not long back from UK & Ireland.

Word is he's still hoping to get a look in with Auckland FC.

Not exactly "young", but he's younger than me!

Ex-Doncaster centre forward Will Longbottom at Bradford Park Avenue in the National League North.

His favoured position is 'missionary' according to Wikipedia?!
