Bays take the 1-0 win at Ferrymead Park, not a phenomenal showing by them though. UC looked like a team playing their SL debut, think they’ll be a squad that get better as the season goes on, lack of experience definitely came into play out there
Yes, due to Easter Weekend. Scanning the draw not as many Friday night games this season - just two more, compared to the previous two season. NZKnowledge
How come games are now being played Thursday Night? Is this a regular thing or just because it's good friday tommorow?
Round 2 Fixtures: Saturday 2pm Nomads vs. DC Royals - Tulett Park 2:45pm Cashmere Technical vs. FC Twenty 11 - Garrick Memorial Park Ferrymead Bays vs. Christchurch United - Ferrymead Park Universities of Canterbury vs. Selwyn - English Park Sunday 12:30pm Nelson Suburbs vs. Coastal Spirit - Saxton Fields
A couple of stats from the opening round, Suburbs 9 - 0 over FC was the highest ever win in the Southern League by the Nelson side as well as the most goals conceded by FC and similar for the 7 - 0 by Coastal over Selwyn, Coastal's highest win in the league and the most Selwyn have conceded.

Coastal player Alejandro Steinwascher scored Coastal's second hattrick in the league since Treye Butler against Mosgiel, 5 - 0 win. Whilst also being the first Coastal player to score 4 goal in a game.
This was also the first time 3 players have score a hattrick in one round. And the first time two players from Nelson scored hattricks in the same game.
Not sure many would have picked Nelson and Coastal to lead the way after the first round! Will be interesting to see if they can keep momentum up through the season. Good to see a number of imports outside the 'big two' especially Alex Steinwascher scoring four for Coastal!

Considering they had FC Twenty and Selwyn it wasn't that unlikely
A bit disappointing this weekend that all four scheduled matches in Christchurch have a direct clash with the Football Ferns match.
I know Saturday afternoon seems to be the holy grail of football kick-off times, but I wish there was a bit more practicality around this.
It is frustrating, because all the other senior footy in Chch has been shifted earlier to accomodate for that. Reserves grade plays at 10am (normally 12:30) and CPL + senior social all starts at 12pm (normally 2:30) before the Ferns kick off at 3pm.

Given Green Island withdrawal, other clubs not wanting to come up, bottom two looking badly undercooked last two seasons and FC2011 off to such a poor start this year, there's certainly an argument Southern League could benefit from returning to an 8 team league (I know it's not what NZF wants).
Apparently Christchurch United are still looking for two or three reinforcements. They are working on getting a defender from Africa and one from the United States.
Yes, both Football South - now Southern Football and Mainland only wanted 8 teams initially when the regional leagues started up again, but looking to move to 10 teams after several seasons but NZF insisted on 10 team straight away. lthomas20

Looks like Daniel Brum who had signed for Coastal has returned back to Wanaka, his former club and scored the only goal of the game when they defeated Otago University on the opening round of the Southern Premier League last Saturday.
