Interesting transfer to China for Burrows. Hopefully a few of the Aussie ALW Kiwis get released by their clubs for Ferns OFC tourney in Samoa, even if just for the semis onwards

REBECCA BURROWS - NEWCASTLE JETS
Burrows, a former NZ U20s representative, signed with Canberra United last year but never got to play after suffering a long-term injury at the end of her NPL season (where she’d been excellent for Heidelberg United – awarded Players’ Player of the Year in 2021). That sucked... but fortunately there was another opportunity around the bend for the now-29yo. Newcastle Jets scooped her up and here we are. RB made an ALW debut off the bench in a 1-0 win against Central Coast in week one and then started the next two matches. But she scored an own goal in a 4-0 defeat against Melbourne Victory the following week - blocking a cross from wide that looped up and over her keeper – and that was also the last time that Rebecca Burrows played for the Jets.

Don’t fret, there’ve been no injury dramas this time. Nope, instead it’s an overseas opportunity that’s summoned her away. Burrows has left the A-League to sign with Hainan Qiongzhong in the Chinese Super League. The first ever foreign signing for the club after their promotion to the top division – although RB’s Jets teammate Emily Roach also seems to have joined her so first-equal perhaps. Not a country where we get very many kiwi players popping up so it’ll be funky to see how she tracks.
IIRC she is Grace Jale's partner? Wonder if Jale will head to China as well?
Could be.
But they went their seperate ways after both being at Canberra (Jale to Perth Burows to Newcastle).
According to this article from July 2022 Burrows is Jale's partner:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/300637914/blow-for-wellington-phoenix-as-topscorer-grace-jale-signs-for-canberra-united
I always wondered about Jale's heritage. I thought Jale was probably a Pasifika name. Seems she is of mixed Fijian and Pakeha parentage:
https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/articles/fiji-origin-grace-jale-lights-up-the-pitch-at-2023-fifa-womens-world-cup

In the Ferns verus Solomons final this week, every time Jale scored there was lots of high pitching screaming, oiut of shot on the sideline. She made the love heart guesture in that direction one time. The commentator said it was the Fijian womens team watching on. Closest they get I guess to watching one of their own, who gets to play at the big world events.

Can't see Clegg getting much game time for a while in the NWSL. In a physical league where an 18 year old is a rarity, it will take her a while to get up to condition for the demands of NWSL soccer. But I'm sure it will be a great environment to be part of and to grow in.
Quite a few fringe NWSL players (particularly goalkeepers) that don't get many playing minutes end up on loan spells to ALW clubs. That might be a serious option for Milly next ALW season. So hope the Nix are keeping the communication channels open with her.
I just hope that her Louisville team mate, the miserable Abby Erceg doesn't poison Clegg's mind about playing for the Football Ferns.
Louisville would be the worst possible overseas club for a young Football Ferns player from that point of view.
Erceg was on TV One 6pm news a month ago having a good old moan about how terrible women's football is in NZ and how irredeemably terrible the Football Ferns are.
To me that kind of extreme negativity and continuing to run down the team and the players from outside mostly just has a detrimental effect on the women's game and the public's perception and interest.

Saw a pre WWC US football show last year, that had Erceg on. She named Erin Nayler as one of the Ferns to watch!! The others she named were all age 30+ that she played with. Surprised she didn't name Rosie White.

I think that says enough, that she is out of touch with the current environment, and the pretty good, if yes not perfect support they now get from NZF. So yeah hopefully you are right and Clegg doesn't get her ear chewed off, with negative shark from 5-10 years ago.

Still I wonder if Erceg could see herself as a marquee/first captain for the Auckland ALW team when it launches in season 2025/26. She may not be NWSL standard in 18 months, and Foley's ALW team may pay more than most in the ALW.

Jackson's 2nd goal of the ALW. Ruby Nathan, who is still to score the ALW, with the assist. Canberra (11th) bottom of the table.

Hannah Blake at Adelaide (10th, 2nd last) has 3 goals, Jale at Perth (8th) 3 goals & Wilkinson at Melb City (2nd) 6 goals. Speckmaier the best at the Nix with 7.

*was Jale's partner. Judging from recent instagrams in the past 6months, Jale and Mackenzie Barry seem to be spending a lot of their time off together..

Perhaps Moore should do a Jamie Hanwell and convert herself into a striker. Semi serious! I remember one of those infamous oggies against the USWNT, was a quality strike.

Yes I see Dominicovich has a goal already also.
Northern Tigers have a bit of history signing NZers who then go onto bigger things. Having had Bunge, Steinmetz and Lake on there books previously.

On a more positive note for kiwi women in Aus. In amoungst the goals this weekend.
NPL NSW.
Charlotte Lancaster with a goal and an assist for APIA Liechhardt. Olympico direct from the corner. Then sets up fellow kiwi Mona Walker 5 min later with a cross into the box from the sideline.
Amy Hisplop with a brace for Northern Tigers. Including a chip over the keeper from well outside the box.
Ava Pritchard also with a brace for Sydney Uni.

Also see
Charlotte Wilford Carroll is playing for Blacktown Spartans and scored a goal on the weekend.

There is usually an influx of A league players once ALW season is finished, so likely to see more kiwi's in that competition over the next month or so.

Big weekend for Kiwi women keepers.
Leat likely to be Aston Villa's starting keeper for rest of WSL season. Their Dutch no 1 keeper injured.

One to watch. 19 yr old midfielder. May not be far off a Ferns squad callup.
Perhaps post the Olympics if a few of the older brigade retire. Plus Hassett is now pregnant.

Feyenoord are 8th in the Eredivisie Women.

Is a U20 WC later this year in Colombia, so be interesting to see how she goes in that. She was a squaddie in the last one (2022)

Unfortunately Spurs won it 2-1 in ET.
So sadly no big day out at Wembley for Bott.

Healthy 18,000 crowd at Spurs home ground for this womens semi final.

Bit of an instinctive reaction I'm guessing, but not the smartest thing to do. Especially now given that she is the no 1 keeper until the WSL seasons ends, with the regular no 1 injured.

Jacqui Hands Lewes now confirmed relegated out of the second tier FA Womens Championship. So I guess Jacqui is the first Football Fern that will be looking for a new club this off season in the UK. She only signed on in Jan with a contract to end of season I believe. Be surprised if she stays at Lewes as next tier down is regional football in UK.
Still a long time between now and the Olympics. Not sure how someone like Jacqui will stay sharp without a club. I guess NZF will have some kind of program back her in NZ with other off contract A league player etc.

Hannah Wilkinson scored in Citys 3-0 win over Newcastle Jets.  City play Sydney in the final next week.
