Mexico vs New Zealand
Its quite simple really.
We just have to beat Mexico 1 -0 and hope Gambia lose to
Portugal or if Gambia win; they beat Portugal 4-0.
Then we still have a chance to go through in the best 4, 3rd
places.
Mexico might go onto win the tournement but I am sure they
don't mind losing to us to let us through. They can think of it as
charity for a 3rd world football nation.
The word from inside enemy lines is that the Mexicans are
going to rest six of their first choice players, including Dos
Santos, for his yellow card.
You heard it first here.

Keats out - good
the two fullbacks out - good
Draper up front. - good
Mexico not starting with their stars. - good
Now lets say our prayers for the next 24hours and it should be
an easy victory
I will be at the game, so I'll drive home as fast as I can from
Edmonton to give you guys a little analysis. It will take me about
3 hours from the end of the match though.
Hey lets hope for a more fluid performance from the lads in the
passing department. We have needlessly given away too much ball,
and at this level against the better teams you will be
punished! And lets take advantage of those scoring chances!
No missing open goals!!!! GO lads go!
Live webcast here folks:
You may have to download the SOPCAST software before you can
view the game. Servers 1, 3 and 5 (in the list below the video
player) are the ones to click on. See instructinos top of
webpage.
We are only down 1-0. Mexico have had a few chances.
I think we are playing better than against portugal.
We should have been awarded a penalty and Boxall fluffed a
sitter.
Anything can happen. Lets hope luck is on our side in the
second half.
Thanks for the update LondonChris, I'm sitting here in the office
on The Terrace in Wellington. No access to streaming internet
because of our firewall!
Hoping, praying, guessing, willing the lads on to glory! A Draper
hatrick will do the trick! Hey Boxall has something in common
with Brockie now then! Fingers crossed for goals galore in
our favour!
I will give you some more details then. as 5 mins away from second
half to start.
Jenkins is playing well.
Peverly made the run that should have been awarded a penalty.
He has played well first half.
Clapham hasn't given the ball away as much as Keats in the
previous games.
The commentators hate Jack Pelter. He elbowed a mexican and
got away with it. I think he just playing typical CB nz style. He
has been pretty solid for me. Commentator said Leeds Utd might be
interested in him.
Spoonly made some good saves.
The new left and right fullbacks are doing ok. Still lack pace
against these mexican forwards though.
I am watching it on the FIFA site. they have a match cast as
well. But I think it isnt working if you are located in NZ,
right?
Game about to start.
Good luck boys

New Zealand scores at the World Cup!
Full Time
2-1 Mexico
Thank god we got a goal.
WE had a better second half. not much possesion, but we pushed
up well,,
Right...I'm off to bed.
Tense stuff, a goal at the world cup, excellent. All our
shots on target in the second half.
And Gambia beat Portugal too, 2-1.
Doing a
sterling job there LondonChris!!!! Ta muchly!!
Good effort from the lads. Three things that pleased me today
1. We wore all white finally!!
2. We didn't get thrashed on the scoreboard.
3. WE SCORED!!!!
Oh, and we are getting the Semi's live now too which is
good.
Still think ball retention is a big problem, we were not only
misplacing passes but getting pushed off the ball by the smaller
Mexicans at times. Guess we should be relative though, a lot
of the Mexican Under 20 players appear regularly for
the big teams in the First Division.
It's difficult to compare Chivas Guadalajara with
Canterbury United.
Other than that, good result really. Spoonley had a
solid tournament, Boxall and Jenkins did well I thought. Plus
we scored!
Also, I think this is really funny... after Pelter elbowed
that Mexican guy in the challenge in the first half, the Mexican
comentators simply referred to him as "Capitan Dolor", or "Captain
Pain" and frequently mentioned how crude and rough our centrebacks
were.
Good. Show the world we aint a bunch of pooftas down under.
pretty much a mexico b team there best players wernt playing but
good 2 see a goal and sam jenkins beat someone with a step over
class haha
Yeah, finally a goal. Could quite easily have had 4 or 5
during the tourny & I don't feel I'm being over generous there,
we need to put chances away. Also we need to keep possession as we
give the ball away far too easily.
On the plus side was the experience the players will have had, the fact we weren't embarrassed in any of the games and I thought Spooney was a class act throughout & wouldn't be at all surprised if he were snapped up by a bigger club.

I love that dispassionate FIFA matchcast text commentary...
84' A shot is blocked by the goalkeeper of Mexico.
Completely generic and they couldn't even be bothered looking
up his name. Class.
So now that we have seen the 20s in action - who should the Phoenix
sign (remembering a few of them are off to US colleges etc)?
haha ye u shoulda jst watched the game on sky. It was alrite.
Portugal nz games was the best outa the three in terms of watching
good football from portugal however this game was nz's best. Still
disspointing to have seen Roddy Brown as a keeper and not being
able to play outfield because of new zealands stupidity of only
choosing 2 gks rather then 3. Owell.
My break-down:
Overall: Lacking quality technically. Tactics were fine, short passes followed by a long ball to strikers. Problem was long balls were not accurate, and strikers seemed like they had never heard the phrase 'go to the ball'. Were quite happy to let Mexico have it. Both CB's had the right idea, impose the physcality and get stuck in. Thats the only way underdogs will win games if they wear their heart on their sleeve and contest every ball, we never did that. On the rarity the strikers managed to retain the ball, they received insufficent support and looked cluesless what to do next. We looked dangerous down the wings, taking the ball to the line, crossing for headers. Most headers were generally well executed, needed a bit more luck to score from one. Playmaker Chris James was missed.
Indvidually:
Jacob Spoonley- Excellent again, hardly dropped anything, needed some help from defence.
Tim Schaeffers - Not impressive, did enough to save himself from embarassment
Jack Pelter - Good performance overall
Michael Boxall - Very imposing + scary, how a CB should be.
Kieran Purcell - Efficent performance, looked good going forward, nice croses.
Sam Jenkins - Looked like the only one that had any creativity at all.
Cole Peverley - Not much to note
Aaron Clapham - Poor
Nick Roydhouse - Tries hard, no end product.
Jeremy Brockie - Has quality, needs to try harder and needs more experience to know what positions to get into. Fustrating.
Mark Draper - Still 18, and talented. Needs to learn how to hold up the ball and get onto the end of long balls.
2 subs - No time to impose themselves.
MOM: Spoonley
Player of Tournament: Spoonley

Mark Draper? It's Greg Draper, and i thought he showed some excellent skills in the air, and keep in mind (as you mentioned), he is only young, still plenty of time to develop, but i thought he showed a strikers instinct at this level (CONSIDERABLY higher than Canty Utd and for the Cashmere High School First XI on Wed afternoon comp!)
TV One had no coverage on their sports news - just a passing
mention that we were knocked out out the tournie at the end.
I was gonna ring up and yell at them but is a toll call - so I
need a plan B. Shocker
