The article says he was born in Germany to a US Dad and a British Mum.
If he spent the age sof 8 to 18 on the Gold Coast, how may years did he spend in NZ?
One thing I'll pay NZ and a lot of people behind the game is the enthusiasm for the build up.

0-1 Germany
1-6 NZ
6-8 Cairns, Brisbane
8-18 Gold Coast
His parents were foreign born but both grew up in NZ if that counts for anything.

That makes sense.
yep one of the top clubs in that league
Any idea of which club?
Brugge - good enough
Pffft... any club that employs Andy Vlahos - Fail.
Just like the Kingz, eh?
ETA: Oh, it's actually Club Brugge - source.
Bad translation for the above:
The blue-blacks are looking for a new striker after the departure of Wesley Sonck (end of contract). Club Brugge sent a scout to the friendly international match Serbia-New Zealand to see Shane Smeltz at work.
World Cup-goer Serbia suffered a painful 0-1 defeat. Smeltz managed only one goal. He was twice top scorer in the Australian top league at Gold Coast United.
I love that film.
Colin Farrell at his best
Tegal is right. He doesn't even play for the Phoenix [anymore]. Can the comments be moved there?

Shane Smeltz (Perth Glory)
Everybody else seemed to have a thread, but not smeltzy ...
Doesnt seem he is going to go on loan anywhere pre world cup. Getting too late possibly now. Presumably that means he'll come back here and train with the NZ based contingent.
Finally he refused from a korean team because he wants to focus on the WC:
Here's a major international football players' statistical site which lists most well-known current All Whites and has detailed ratings of players' skills and strengths: The PES Stats Database.
It carries forum postings beneath each player listing which anybody can contribute to (if you take a couple of minutes to register) which makes it fun to debate the player's skill ratings, contribute your own info and opinions, correct errant foreigners etc.
A handfull of Kiwis already contribute (e.g. the guy handling the All Whites page is a foreign national but "has Maori blood").
Always needs updating and more Kiwi contributions and is very international with people from all over the show inquiring or commenting on NZ players.
Here is Shane Smeltz's page (great action photo too!). His ratings (they are percentages) for most skills are in the late 70s into the 80s, which is really good: http://pesstatsdatabase.com/viewtopic.php?f=630&t=16453&view=previous
As an example of how the postings can be interesting, someone living in the States has commented his dribbling skills etc should be lower after seeing the recent Mexico game.
Here is the NZ team page, which enables you to find all All Whites which have stats listings by clicking on the player's name in the squad line-up. Listings for: Smeltz, Killen, Wood, Fallon, Bertos, Elliott, Oughton, Nelsen, Old, Boyens, Lochead, Moss, Paston
Notice there's no Vicelich, Smith, Sigmund, Reid, McGlinchey or Brown (someone could add these).
Will NZ be in the next edition of PES?????
PES is almost as good as Pax.
kinda off topic

The player stats site is largely independent from the Pro Evolution Soccer game and so includes a lot of information even on All Whites players, none of whom feature in the game itself. It's more of a general site useful for info, detailed analysis and debate on players.
It's one of the only international football player statistics sites to include detailed analysis of All Whites players- and so is of interest for those wanting to debate the strengths and weaknesses of players like Shane Smeltz. The skill ratings are quite detailed...
Very interesting: AWs wanting tobe top shape for the WC:
We won't' be daunted - Shane Smeltz i/v
Who needs Torres when you have that guy with the funny hair from the Gold Coast

I have heard from good source in Europe Smeltz is in talks with a Belgian club.
Yes, have heard similar rumours.
Hope it's a good Juliper League club. Smeltzy deserves better than Cold Ghost.

This guy's trolling us, there are two Brugge clubs. Apparently it's Belgium's answer to ManU-Man City.

Thanks EG, your work!
I hope Smeltzy does get a massive offer from Europe after the world cup. Esp if he gets a few goals for us. Im sure he'll be working his little butt off.

No, Smeltzy, no...
Wong team of boxheads, it's the wrong team of boxheads...
He'll never win anything there.
Further to this, my sources say that this seems to be nothing more than speculation on the part of the journos, very common for this time of year.
