Asia Vs Oceania - NZ path to World Cup

just read something interesting:

Asia has retained four automatic berths for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with a potential fifth on offer via a playoff with Oceania's top side over two legs.

this means your qualification for the world cup becomes easier. playing the 5th best asian team is much easier than the 5th best south american team...
potentially setting up an Australia Vs New Zealend play off for a place in the World Cup!

all you need to do is beat the solomon islands to get there!

You'd have to be the 5th best team in asia and based on the latest competition there is no chance.

I would rather play any other team than Australia for the 5th place play-off. The whole big brother thing.

But realisticly we have more chance of beating Australia than a Korea or Japan.

We are more suited to defending against Australia style football than the top asian teams style.

Well said Gings lol. And I think Tim Brown could stop Archie with ease - as could Nelsen.

you guys are missing the point... you will more than likely be playing a saudi arabia or iran team (5th best asian team) instead of a uruguay (5th best South American) which will make it so much easier for nz to qualify for the world cup.. :)

we will need all of NZ's top players if we are to have any chance of beating Japan, Ausi, Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq etc etc, even then it would be immensly difficult.

Imagine if NZ made the 2010 world cup! it would be amazing, the whole country would go crazy just like Ausi did.

why would you not have all of nz top players?? these qualification matches are on fifa dates so your best players can come back from overseas etc.. we had all our top players when we beat uruguay if that gives you any indication... you proboably wont play most of those teams you mentioned above, japan, aus, south korea are 3 teams which i dont see coming 5th in asia..

I cant.

Say if you guys did end up playing someone like Iran on your day you could give them a real run for their money. Would love to see ya in the world cup next to us. Just get past Oceania this time!

Far out mate, NZ could rip the nasal hairs out of almost all of those teams, so we would be placed well over the halfway line. I think, with our top team, we could beat Bahrain, Uzbekistan, and Kuwait.

I think realistically at the moment we are about 10th. But with a sold out North Harbour stadium cheering the boys on, we will beat the 5th best team.

Iraq are better than 13th say what you like about their Asian Cup win but they won it so they deserve to be at least top 5 maybe not 1st yet though. Yeah i'd say about 10th although Afghanistan is on the rise we would have to watch out for them!!

North Harbour? are you havin a laff? Why the f**k should football bother with Auckland after
the pathetic efforts put in by Kingz/Knights etc?

Not a personal attack HH just think the AW vs 5th Best Asian Mob would set WELLINGTON off!

it will be interesting to see what crowds they do get in auckland now that the qualifiers are all that they have.  if the crowds are too low, i'm looking forward to christchurch and wellington becoming the new homes of the national side.

in addition to this, during the a-league franchise bidding process, graeme seatter went out of his way to stress the importance of the franchise holder being close to the national body; therefore, if the all whites end up playing in wellington, which is also home to the phoenix, can we assume that the national body will also move to the new home of football?

As mentioned earlier by someone. Lets get our full team together and get past the Island teams comfortably first. Then we can talk about who and where the 5th place game will be played.

Just for a dose of reality...we played Malaysia here last year in two friendlies, after they had not played at all in two years, and barely beat them in both games. They're ranked 31st in Asia, and were laughable at the Asian Cup. I can't really see us posing any kind of a serious challenge to the 5th placed Asian team, whoever that may be.

Below was the starting line-up for the first game against Malaysia last year. A lot of these players have developed in the last 18 months. Add in Chris James, Killen, Elliot, Nelsen, Vicelich, Mulligan, Lochead etc. It is a different ball game now. Our full squad should be able to compete against the 5th place Asian team. We wouldn't be favourites but we should be in the postiton to cause an upset.  If we send a team like below, then we would get our ass kicked.

Glen Moss (debut)

Jeremy Christie
Danny Hay
Steven Old
Noah Hickey

Leo Bertos
Tim Brown
Andy Barron (debut)
Adrian Webster

Brent Fisher
Vaughan Coveny

Subs from:
Ross Nicholson, James Pritchett, Andy Boyens, Cole Tinkler, Craig
Wylie, Jeff Fleming, Shane Smeltz, Jarrod Smith, Campbell Banks

Well, I admire your optimism. I think that Nelsen is the only international-class player we have, and that the only way for us to improve our international performance is to follow Australia's path and join the Asian confederation. It'll probably take us a few years or so to become fully competetive, but I see it as the only way forward.

Looking at that lot I can't see Fleming or Nicholson ever playing for us again, Cov's ,Hay and Noah have retired and Banks, Wylie, Webster and Fisher have some work to do to be in the frame if we're a close to full strength.
