AUCKLAND - Andy Barron will captain a New Zealand Invitation XI including four other All Whites in the first of two Football for Life charity matches against Fiji in Suva on Friday night.
The Canterbury United playmaker will be surrounded in the midfield by All Whites team-mates Jeremy Brockie and Jeff Campbell and New Zealand U-20 representative Craig Henderson for the match at Fiji Post Stadium (Sky Sport 3, 7.30pm).
New Wellington Phoenix signing Jacob Spoonley will start in goal ahead of a back four including All Whites James Pritchett and Steven Old while the Invitation XIs two-man strikeforce includes Hawkes Bay United marksman Sam Messam, the brother of Waikato rugby representative Liam Messam.
The Invitation XI will only have the benefit of two short training sessions ahead of the match which is to be followed by a second leg at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Sunday (3pm NZT).
But coach Jonathan Gould insists the limited preparation has not dampened his sides ambitions for the matches - a joint initiative by Oceania and FIFA to raise funds for the victims of Aprils deadly tsunami in the Solomon Islands.
A lot of the players know each other so I dont think itll be a problem and weve got a number of experienced guys like Andy [Barron] and Jeff [Campbell] who Id expect to bring the team together , Gould said.
Despite the determination to play well, Gould said the matches had to be put into context.
Carlos [Fiji coach Carlos Buzzetti] is using this as preparation for Fijis [South Pacific Games opener against] Samoa and all our players have something to prove. But we shouldnt lose sight of the fact were playing for the needy in the Solomon Islands, the former Scotland and Glasgow Celtic goalkeeper said.
In my mind if youve got people paying for a charity match they must be entertained whether thats with a competitive match or goalsthats what weve got to try and do.
