Ok, I thought it was just a one-off then, a two-off, then maybe a three, but why do the All Whites continue to wear the All Blue?  Looks and sounds a bit silly if you ask me.  Is it a deal with having to wear away colours or is there some other reason.  Silliest thing was tonights match making Brazil change their blue shorts cos it clashed with ours!

Its the official away strip.  I happen like it quite a bit. Its much better than boring black.

The reason for the strips is as follows. The colours were arranged by FIFA a couple of weeks ago. Brazil were the "home" team so got to wear their first choice yellow shirt. For television, spectator and media purposes one team has to be in predominatly dark colours and the other one in light, hence the Brazilians in the white shorts. Nothing to do with NZ.

My oversight, yes the all whites play well in blue, as long as they don't bring back the red shorts as these were the colours when the mighty vanawatu defeated us, correct me if i am wrong

Erm, which one of those was considered dark? The yellow or the light blue?

The reason the away strip is now blue is because its the same blue as on our National flag. This decision was made a few years ago when we switched to Nike as the national strip maker.

But the blue in the kit looked a lot lighter than the blue on the flag... maybe I need to turn down the brightness on my telly

Generally speaking, white, yellow and grey are considered light, everything else is considered dark, but I think the rule mentioned above only applies to shirts. As far as shorts and socks go, the opposing teams can't wear the same piece of clothing in the same colour. For example, if we had worn white shorts and Brazil blue, that would have been fine too. Not sure how they reached the decision ultimately, but probably by mutual arrangement.

I had to photograph Ryan Nelsen and Mia Jackman a couple of years ago for SNZ and Nike for the SMall Whites coaching manual and posters. I was told by Hamish Miller that was the reason for the change to Blue for the away strip. I think from memory the last time we used the black away strip was when we played France in the confeds cup. After that we had the red shorts and blue top. The red is also in the flag. Im not sure if the Blue is supposed to match sorry.

We're the All Whites. Shouldn't we be in White? England played in red FFS. We should have asked England to change socks and shorts.

NZ were the "home" team for the purposes of kit choice. (For the North Korea game, NZ are the "away" team as they were with Brazil.)

So I guess the England kit choice comes down to the regulation that states:

If, in the opinion of the referee or match commissioner, the two teams colours might cause confusion or prove unsuitable for television broadcast, the host team will wear its official kit while the visiting team will wear either its reserve kit or a combination of both.

Except of course, NZ should have worn white under that rule too..... you don't suppose that the NZ Association entered the colours in the wrong boxes in the registration form....
