Hard to believe, but the 2007/2008 Champions League season starts on Weddnesday morning our time, with the matches in the first qualifying round kicking off. I was just wondering how many guys (other than me!) have teams that they support playing in these games, and whether anyone actually cares about the first two qualifying rounds...

Results from 17 July:

FK Zeta (Montenegro) 3-1 FBK Kaunas (Lithuania)

Zeta are dreaming of a tie with Rangers FC after a resounding victory against their ten-man Lithuanian visitors, who did manage a late away goal. Kaunas were always up against it once Ianko Valkanov was dismissed midway through the first half. Zeta took the lead soon afterwards through arko Korać's penalty after Slaven Stjepanović was upended. Barely two minutes later, Janko Tumbaević doubled the advantage with a header and Stjepanović added a third before the hour. Yet Kaunas pulled one back through Givi Kvaratskhelia and they still have a chance in Tuesday's second leg.

S.S. Murata (San Marino) 1-2 Tampere United (Finland)

A late goal from Jari Niemi, his second of the night, swung the tie firmly in the Finnish visitors' favour and raised hopes of a meeting with PFC Levski Sofia. Murata, the first team to represent San Marino in the competition, boasted FIFA World Cup-winner Aldair, now 41, in their starting lineup and his quality helped them take the lead just before half-time with Cristian Protti's right-foot shot. Murata, who had seen Roberto Teodorani hit the post earlier, were to concede twice in the second half though with Niemi's precise finishing leaving Murata with it all to do a week tomorrow.

The New Saints FC (Wales) 3-2 FK Ventspils (Latvia)

The Welsh champions secured an historic first European victory when Barry Hogan scored deep into added time. TNS thought they had been denied when Vits Rimkus notched a late equaliser. That was the second time the striker had cancelled out the home side's advantage: Michael Wilde's smart header opened the scoring early on for TNS but the lead only lasted ten minutes before Rimkus struck. The Latvian visitors, making their UEFA Champions League debut, proved spirited opposition and after defender Phil Baker had restored TNS's advantage in the second half they responded again. However, there was no time remaining for a third equaliser following Hogan's fierce strike and TNS will feel hopeful of winning through to meet FC Salzburg after next Wednesday's return.

FK Khazar Lenkoran (Azerbaijan) 1-1 NK Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia)

With a tie against NK Domale or KF Tirana awaiting the winners after the second leg in Croatia next Tuesday, the Azerbaijani club began with purpose. Zaur Ramazanov was particularly lively and his good work led to a chance for Brazilian attacker Junior, only for the Brazilian attacker to miss. For Dinamo, Luka Modrić proved particularly effective. The hosts took the lead soon after the interval and it was no surprise that it came from Ramazanov following a fine run but parity was quickly restored by Etto. Lenkoran then had to hang on at the end after a red card for captain Emin Guliyev.

APOEL FC (Cyprus) 2-0 FC BATE Borisov (Belarus)

APOEL will have the upper hand in the second leg next Tuesday after a fine display on a humid evening in Cyprus. It was the visitors from Belarus that began brighter, Igor Stasevich missing from long range but from then on it was all APOEL. Veteran striker Nikos Machlas spurned three good chances before Chrysostomos Michail finally beat Aleksandr Fedorovich with a well-placed shot from just outside the area. Machlas doubled the lead with a powerful header just after the hour and BATE's misery was complete when defender Anton Sakharov was sent off. The winners will meet either FH Hafnarfjrdur or HB Trshavn.

FC Olimpi Rustavi (Georgia) 0-0 FC Astana (Kazakhstan)

Olimpi were unable to find the net on their competition debut but the Georgian title-holders will still hope to progress to a tie against Rosenborg BK after the return in Kazakhstan next Tuesday. It was the first match in charge for new Olimpi coach Varlam Kilasonia, and he began in attacking vein with two strikers Vladimer Dvalishvili and Jaba Dvali. Astana were resolute though and had goalkeeper Sergei Boichenko in fine form. Gabon striker Baudry Massouanga joined the home attack in the second half but still the visitors held firm, and they nearly snatched a vital away goal through Arsen Tlekhugov late on.

Linfield FC (Northern Ireland) 0-0 IF Elfsborg (Sweden)

Debreceni VSC of Hungary are no closer to learning their opponents in the next round after this close contest in Northern Ireland. Home goalkeeper Alan Mannus made several good saves but was relieved when Fredrik Berglund missed for the Swedish visitors from inside the penalty area. Linfield's best chances fell to midfielder Jamie Mulgrew, with one well-taken header particularly standing out, although his fellow midfielder Paul McAreavey was perhaps the most dynamic on view. The sides meet again on Wednesday week.

Marsaxlokk FC (Malta) 0-6 FK Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina)

Sarajevo look certain to play KRC Genk in the second qualifying round after an emphatic victory in Malta. The result appeared beyond doubt after only 20 minutes as a pair of goals from Admir Racic and another from Emir Obuća put Sarajevo firmly in control. Marko Maksimović added a fourth on 41 minutes and the Maltese champions would have been thankful for small mercies when a floodlight failure shortly before half-time briefly brought the game to a halt. With the lights back on Sarajevo resumed command. Obuća added his second of the game on 65 minutes before Malcolm Licari's own goal mercifully brought the curtain down on Marsaxlokk's harrowing competition debut.

FC Sheriff (Moldova) 2-0 FC Rngers (Andorra)

Goals from Evgheni Gorodetchil and Aleksei Kuchuk put Sheriff within sight of a prize tie against Beşiktaş JK after a hard-fought win against nine-man Rnger's. Goalkeeper Gregorio Rodriguez was the first to go after handling outside his area on 15 minutes and worse was to follow when Kuchuk fired Sheriff in front at the end of the first half. Gorodetchil made sure of victory with a long-range strike with eleven minutes to play before Teba was dismissed late on.

FH Hafnarfjrdur (Iceland) 4-1 HB Trshavn (Faroe Islands)

Hafnarfjrdur made home advantage count with two goals in each half. The Icelandic side got off to the perfect start when Freyr Bjarnason put them ahead on ten minutes and they doubled their lead three minutes later when Matthas Vilhjlmsson pounced on a rebound from Sigurvin lafssons header. Hafnarfjrdurs northern neighbours were given hope when Tommy Nielson scored an own goal on 45 minutes but further strikes from lafsson and Vilhjlmsson after the break put Hafnarfjrdur on course for a second qualifying round meeting against either APOEL FC or FC BATE Borisov.

NK Domale (Slovenia) 1-0 KF Tirana (Albania)

Sinia Janković's superb long-range strike ensured the Slovenian side's first foray into the UEFA Champions League ended in triumph. Janković fired in from 25 metres on the stroke of half-time to reward the home side for some enterprising play during the opening period. Tirana had been happy to play on the counterattack but had done little to test home goalkeeper Dejan Nemec. Domale continued to press after the interval but substitute Slavia Dvorančič missed two great chances to leave a second qualifying round tie against either FK Khazar Lenkoran or NK Dinamo Zagreb still up for grabs.

FK Pobeda (Macedonia) 0-1 FC Levadia (Estonia)

Konstantin Nahk struck early in the second half to give the Estonian champions a lead to take home from their trip to F.Y.R. Macedonia. The match was decided on 52 minutes when Nahk's low free-kick from 25 metres passed through a packed penalty area and beyond goalkeeper Darko Tofiloski. The hosts' hopes of a comeback were dented when defender Neboja Stojković was sent off for a professional foul on Vitoldas Cepauskas in the 74th minute. Levadia should have put the tie out of reach after that, and made sure of a meeting with FK Crvena Zvezda in the second qualifying round, but Vitali Leitan spurned two late chances.

Derry City FC (Republic of Ireland) 0-0 FC Pyunik (Armenia)

John Robertson's side have it all to do in Yerevan next week after failing to take a clutch of chances against their Armenian opponents. Pat McCourt was denied early on and that set the tone for the evening. Ciaran Martyn shot weakly at Gevord Kasparov after the interval with Derry's best opportunity, while McCourt and Barry Molloy also spurned late chances for a frustrated home side. Pyunik will now fancy their chances of progressing to a tie with FC Shakhtar Donetsk when the Irish club make the long journey east next week.

F91 Dudelange (Luxemburg) 1-2 MK ilina (Slovakia)

ilina battled back to clinch a hard-earned victory in Luxemburg after falling behind just before half-time. The Slovakian champions dominated the first half and both Adam Nemec and Mrio Breka spurned excellent chances, but a minute into stoppage time the home side went ahead. Tomas Hubocan brought Joris Di Gregorio down in the penalty area and the striker fired in the spot kick. ilina were not behind for long. Robert Jez drew his side level with another penalty four minutes after the restart and substitute Ivan Lietava headed in the winner on 73 minutes. The winners will play SK Slavia Praha in the second qualifying round.

FC BATE Borisov (Belarus) 3-0 APOEL FC (Cyprus) (agg: 3-2 aet)

BATE clinched a second round meeting with either FH Hafnarfjrdur or HB Trshavn after staging a remarkable recovery to overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit before winning the tie in extra time though Gennadi Bliznyuk. Spurred on by noisy home support, the Belarussians found hope on the quarter-hour as left-back Igor Stasevich's low shot fizzed into the net. The visitors were on course for an aggregate win, though, until 15 minutes from the end when substitute Dmitri Platonov levelled the tie after racing on to Dmitri Likhtarovich's through ball. The hosts went into the additional half-hour full of confidence and turned that into a winning goal a minute before the second half-time break as Bliznyuk pounced from close range.

NK Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) 3-1 FK Khazar Lenkoran (Azerbaijan) (agg: 4-2 aet)

Dinamo Zagreb will face either NK Domale or KF Tirana in the second qualifying round but they were forced into extra time before eventually overcoming ten-man Khazar. Goals by Mario Mandukić (100) and Josip Tadić (116) edged them into the next stage but the Croatian side had it all to do after repeating their error of the first leg by going behind against their Azerbaijani visitors. Brazilian midfielder Junior struck in spectacular fashion for Khazar with a ferocious 35-metre free-kick that completely caught goalkeeper Georg Koch off guard on 16 minutes. The home side struggled to find their rhythm until eleven minutes after the break when Davor Vugrinec headed in Mario Mandukić's pinpoint cross. As in the first leg Khazar were once more reduced to ten men, when Edmond N'tiamoah was sent off in the 79th minute, and it was a setback from which they never really recovered.

FBK Kaunas (Lithuania) 3-2 FK Zeta (Montenegro) (agg: 4-5)

Having scored an away goal with Zeta 3-0 ahead in last week's first leg, Kaunas built on that strike in the early stages tonight when an aggressive and attacking approach yielded three goals in the opening 20 minutes. The first was scored by Ričardas Beniuis as he headed in a Nukri Manchkhava cross after seven minutes, to be followed ten minutes later by Givi Kvaratskhelia's angled drive from the corner of the area. Two quickly became three as Audrius Ksanavicius provided the final touch to a sweeping counter (20), although that was to prove the high point for the Lithuanian side, who saw a Pascal Mendy penalty saved in the 41st minute. By that point arko Korać (33) had levelled the aggregate scores and, amid pouring rain and lightning, Marko Ćetković struck the decisive blow in the final minute. The Montenegrin team will meet Scotland's Rangers FC in the next round.

FC Astana (Kazakhstan) 3-0 FC Olimpi Rustavi (Georgia) (agg: 3-0)

Astana became the first Kazakh team to reach the second qualifying round after overcoming ten-man Olimpi with a fine second-leg performance. Most of the damage had been done even before visiting forward Rezo Djikia was sent off early in the second half as goals by captain Aleksandr Kuchma (14) and Arsen Tlekhugov (52) brought the hosts ever closer to an encounter with Rosenborg BK, a date which was sealed when Murat Suyumagambetov headed in Eduard Sergienko's centre late in the match.

FC Rngers (Andorra) 0-3 FC Sheriff (Moldova) (agg: 0-5)

After an evenly-balanced first half Sheriff added to their two goals from the first leg to complete a comfortable aggregate success and earn a tie against Beşiktaş JK of Turkey, which promises to be a considerably trickier affair. Rnger's were missing two players sent off in the first leg, Gregorio Rodriguez and Sergio Albanell, and the visitors confirmed their superiority with a determined display after the break which brought goals for Benjamin Balima (68), Sasa Kajkut (72) and Alexandru Suvorov (84).

FK Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) 3-1 Marsaxlokk FC (Malta) (agg: 9-1)

This was a tie already put well beyond doubt in Malta last week but Marsaxlokk put up much sterner resistance before experiencing defeat again in Sarajevo. The score remained goalless until three minutes before half-time when Mirza Meić broke the deadlock with a spectacular free-kick fom the edge of the penalty area. Zdravko araba doubled the lead on 61 minutes but the visitors found a response within four minutes through Cleaven Frendo. However, Almir Turković ensured the Bosnia-Herzegovnian outfit had the last word, with an emphatic volley on 76 minutes, leaving the Sarajevo side brimming with confidence ahead of their meeting with KRC Genk of Belgium.

IF Elfsborg (Sweden) 1-0 Linfield FC (Northern Ireland) (agg: 1-0)

Mathias Svensson was the home hero as the Swedish side won through to earn a meeting with Debreceni VSC. Elfsborg were on the offensive straight away with striker Fredrik Berglund twice going close. Mathias Svensson eventually opened the scoring with a header after a neat cross from Anders Svensson, although the ball first hit the bar and the Linfield keeper before crossing the line. Linfield nearly got a priceless away goal when Damien Curran's header was cleared by Stefan Ishizaki and Curran also saw a volley saved by Johan Wiland in a thrilling finish.

FC Pyunik (Armenia) 2-0 Derry City FC (Republic of Ireland) (agg: 2-0)

A glamour tie with FC Shakhtar Donetsk awaits the Armenian hosts after goals in each half from strikers Arsen Avetisan and Gevorg Ghazaryan saw off the visitors. After a goalless draw in the Republic of Ireland last week, the deadlock was finally broken when Avetisan saw his original shot saved by Pat Jennings and followed up to score. Derry defender Darren Kelly headed against the Pyunik bar on the hour but the home crowd were able to relax when Ghazaryan scored from Levon Pachajyan's right-wing cross.

Tampere United (Finland) 2-0 S.S. Murata (San Marino) (agg: 4-1)

After a 2-1 victory in San Marino last time, the Finnish club were always confident of confirming a tie against PFC Levski Sofia. That was underlined in the opening minutes when Tomi Petrescu fired into the top-right corner from 18 metres. Tampere's lead on the night was soon doubled when Petrescu turned provider for Jari Nemi to score from close range. Murata were barely in the contest and had to wait an hour for their first chance.

FK Ventspils (Latvia) 2-1 The New Saints FC (Wales) (agg: 4-4, Ventspils win on away goals)

Despite the scoreline, Ventspils were always in command with TNS's goal on a sodden night coming deep into added time. Having lost 3-2 in Wales, the Latvian side knew a good start was required and it duly came when Jean-Paul Ndeki headed in. The second came soon after the interval when Deniss Kacanovs also scored with his head, leaving TNS needing two goals to go through. By the time, Martin Naylor scored with his free-kick, Ventspils were already dreaming of an encounter with FC Salzburg.

FC Levadia Tallinn (Estonia) 0-0 FK Pobeda (Macedonia) (agg: 1-0)

Konstantin Nahks first-leg free-kick in a sweltering F.Y.R. Macedonia last week ultimately proved enough to give the Estonian capital club a dream tie with FK Crvena Zvezda. The visitors could not find the goal they needed to at least take the tie into extra time and their profligacy in front of the net meant Levadia won through to the second qualifying round for only the second time in their history something no other team from their country has ever managed.

HB Trshavn (Faroe Islands) 0-0 FH Hafnarfjrdur (Iceland) (agg: 1-4)

The Icelandic visitors comfortably won through to a duel with FC BATE Borisov after keeping their Faroese hosts HB at bay. Having won 4-1 at home in the first encounter, there was always going to be little suspense with the return fixture. Hafnarfjrdur, in their third straight season in the competition, also reached the second qualifying round in the 2006/07 campaign but will want to perform better than the 3-0 aggregate defeat by Legia Warszawa suffered then.

MK ilina (Slovakia) 54 F91 Dudelange (Luxemburg) (agg: 7-5)

The Slovakian side edged a nine-goal thriller on the night but always held the upper hand in this tie after their 2-1 success in Luxembourg last week. ilina raced into a three-goal lead inside half-an-hour courtesy of goals from Pavel Devaty, Ivan Lietava and Peter Styvar. Joris Di Gregorio pulled two back either side of the interval but Benjamin Vomacka soon struck again for the home team. Laurent Guthlebera again cut the deficit for the visitors only for Styvar to score his sides fifth. A late consolation from Zarko Lukic rounded out the scoring but it is ilina who will face Czech rivals SK Slavia Praha.

KF Tirana (Albania) 1-2 NK Domale (Slovenia) (agg: 1-3)

NK Dinamo Zagreb will take on Slovenian opposition after Domale added victory in Albania to their 1-0 success at home. Zlatan Ljubijankič, with a header, and Dario Zahora, who missed the first game through suspension, struck either side of a Klodian Duro goal to confirm the visitors' progress. "We played as a team and we took our chances," said Domale coach Slavisa Stojanović. "As I predicted the return of Dario made the difference."
