I watch quite a few of the mpl games and there are some decent players in the league. Thought it might be interesting to see who everyones top 5 strikers, top 5 midfielders, top 5 defenders and top 3 gk were in the league. See how many of these players actually get picked in the cant utd team! Just a bit of fun cheers

I totally agree that the standard is not awfully high here is Chch but Cant Utd aren't gonna import that many players. The mpl is going to be where a large proportion of the players are going to come from...we just dont have the money here that the Auckland sides do to throw at imports.
I think it would be good to discuss who would be most likely to be effective in the ASB premiership. Some names that have played at mpl level but arent proven at ASB premiership level but i think would be effective:
Strikers: Welbourne (CS), Miles (Western)
Midfielders: Piercy (Bays), Smith (Nelson), McIntyre (Bays)
Defenders: Wilson (Western), Parker (Halswell)
Agree? Disagree? What do you think?

I assume that Price will not around for the ASB Premiership as heading back to his college in the US.
The lad Young from Richmond was class as well but ultimately that may come down to finances as well.
AllWhites822011-05-30 23:09:58
Wow Richmond losing one of their big players. Suprised that didn't end up on the interesting Div 1 page.

Yea i think Murphy should be given a go. May not start for CU but would be a good player to come off the bench and make an impact. If its true that Miles is going to the states then this could be a big loss for Western. Think he is their captain, was the youth team captain too, and the couple games i saw was the best player for them. I agree that if Thomas was to concentrate on his keeping he could well overtake Batty for the num 1 spot...but will this happen?
whose the lad at western who plays right back, thinks he's turned out for canterbury youth, I think he's quite tidy, same goes for coastal's left back, used to play for western, he's also played for the youth team and trialled with the senior team but may be a question with attitude, maybe coastal supporters could comment. On top of that apologise because I'm crap with names but the Northern Irish lad at coastal not bad either and can play either winger or wing back. The Brazillian lad ar Bays is worth a mention just because he's been so clinical. Finally I think theirs nothing wrong with having a few weeks of trainig with a large mainland squad and wittle it down after a few weeks. At the very least it may give lads who are close an idea of whats required to make the next step up so they can go away and work on their game. To be honest I think the lads who played for Canterbury from the mainland were the best ones around. Be interesting to see if you all agree, and if not who would you get rid of and why?

Think the guy ur talking about from Western is Anthony Jones, and i agree he should be in the squad as he's been excellent this year and has done well in previous seasons with the Canty youth team. Nelson Suburbs 5 (Feni 2, Alloff, Kay & og)Western 2 (dont know). Half time 3-2
Nelson Suburbs walked all over Richmond last year. If you compare the players one on one, Nelson Suburbs still has the better squad. Richmond haven't played a tough team all season. (except for my Marlborough) Even with Nelson's young squad, they must be favourite. You're obviously a Richmond supporter.
Bays 4 ChCh U 2 Half time 2-2
Woolston Tech 4 Halswell 0
Coastal S 1 Nomads 0 HT 1-0
Nelson 5 Western 2
Results
That makes Tech's catch up game against Western very important now (we get a sneak preview as these two teams square off in the Chatham Cup at Ferrymead Park on Monday), a win in that game would put Tech 2 points behind Bays and Suburbs, they play Suburbs next Saturday at Ferrymead Park while Bays play Western, a game Western desperately need to win to get their season back on track. Certainly not.

Just because a player looks good in the MPL does not mean they can make the step up for the ASB Premiership. The pace of the game at the ASB Premiership is way faster and the defence alot tighter. Sometimes the higher you play it is what you do off the park is just as important s what you do in the on the park.
How high is the standard on the Mainland PFL compared to other top leagues around the country. Having watched the league (the old Southern League, Super Club then the Christchurch League before the Mainland PFL started) week in week out for over thirty years in Christchurch I think the over all standard has dropped in recent years.
It is ten year since the Mainland as been played and there were two season were a team failed to win a single point.
Hell I have heard in the pasT that some MPL sides have only had less than half the squad show up for training had a quick kick around then into the clubrooms for a beer.
When was the last time a Mainland side made the Chatham Cup Final? And what was the score?
We have players playing in the league that do not know the Laws of the games, how many times do you see a player make a bad foul and the ref blows it up with the player, or team mate yelling 'but ref I won the ball".
If the Canterbury United board are serious about winning the Premiership they will have to finance several imports.

Did you see Ryan giggs say exactly that to the ref in the champions League final yesterday after getting pinged for a tackle from behind? Happens at the very top and obviously not a barrier to progressing in the game.
Players I'd like to see given a chance with the Dragons this year -
Strikers: Miles (Western), Ede (Halswell) and Welbourne (Coa$tal)
Midfield: Murphy (Bays)
Defenders: Nicol (Coa$tal), Parker (Halswell), Price (Tech)
Keepers: Highfield (Bays) Thomas (Coa$tal)
Of the lot Chris Murphy is probably the one who really stands out as deserving a chance, he has played to a consistently high standard over the past couple of years. Can play either central or wide midfield and is very creative on the ball, capable of creating goal scoring chances for himself or setting them up for others and doesn't shirk his defensive duties. I would be surprised if he doesn't get a call from Braithwaite this year.

Totally agree with you about Murphy, he's been up their for a few years now, scores, creates and not afraid of a wee tackle either. He actually trained with Canty during pre-season but didn't really impress over 6 weeks, so the question is can he make the step up? I fully expect him to get another crack at the whip this season.Someone else mentioned Piercy, he actually called Keith and asked for an opportunity to try out for canty, which shows the confidence was their, unfortunately he turned up to one session which just happened to be a sunday morning torture fitness session, designed to separate the men from the boys, after said session he told Keith and I may be paraphrasing here that at this stage of his career he was'nt ready to commit to Canterbury. Basically that told the management all they needed to know. Miles is quite well thought off and got a lot of gametime towards the 2nd half of the season and had he not had a few niggles would have probably played more. On top of that I believe he's off to the states on a scholarship in August. Ede's a funny one, quite capable of scoring goals but the perception, and anyone fans of his bear in mind its a perception that when the going gets tough he tends to pick up phantom injuries. Games where I've seen Ede play and the team is down and looks like losing, he's thrown the towel in without fail and limped off. Now the lad could be injury prone but I've stood their and had one of his own team mates comment that he does this everytime it looks like its not gonna be his day. Wellbourne I can't comment but will keep an eye out and give you my expert opinion, lol. Same goes for Nicol. If Parker is the same player I'm thinking of then I would agree, can play centre mid or defence, good range with his passing, not the most aggressive which may be his downfall because I know braith and Pitts tend to favour that style of plyer more. Price and Cowen would probably had their chance by now but they will be returning to the states in august for their 3rd year at college. Highfield has some history with the Canterbury board concerning a past contract. I don't know the facts but basically I think Canty tried to renage on a contract and Highfield either took legal action and won or threatened to. Which should be fine except that I think management were keen to have him on board last season but the board said no. I may be wrong with that but thats how I heard it. Matty Thomas where do you start with him class winger, class keeper, one lazy unreliable bollucks and I like the lad. You just never know if he's gonna turn up, I don't mean meterphorically, I mean literally. The one reason he's not kickin arse for Canterbury or Otago is himself. Anyway I'm sorry to butcher your list of prospects, I have'nt seen nearly enough games to come up with a great list but I would pick alot of the Nelson lads who figured with the youth team. The lad Young from Richmond was class as well but ultimately that may come down to finances as well.

If your are talking about Yong or Green I hear that both are returning to the UK, may be already on the way. I hear Yong as permit issues and Green heading back to coach.

Can confirm that Jordan Yong is heading back to the UK, will have his last game from Richmond this coming Monday (Queen's Birthday) when they take on Suburbs at Saxton Oval in the Chatham Cup.

Can be a barrier if you keep getting carded.
Hopefully Tom Lancaster maybe back from his OE for the sumner and maybe Sam Ayers (Suburbs) also on his OE worth a run if his is back home as well. AllWhites822011-05-30 23:40:31

Richmond drew away to Marlborough Mariners on Saturday so will be interesting to see how they go over the next few weeks in the league up there, without Yong. Richmond two points clear with a game in hand, over Mariners, after Round 8 of 20.

Thomas has several outings for Otago United last sumner, in the outfield, before getting injuried I recall.

Scouse are you referring to Micky Willis (Western), if so he is currently playing in Aussie at the moment.
The Irish lad at Coa$tal is Ryan Stewart (Skippy) who would have played for Otago this year if he hadn't broken his leg at the end of last season. Other lad from Western now at Coa$tal is Danny Moir who learnt his game at St Albans Shirley and New Brighton before going on to Shirley BHS then back to New Brighton where he made his senior debut before going to the States on a scholarship. Danny played for the Dragons under Korouch Monseff and Danny Halligan. Totally agree with a large train on squad (20 - 30 players initially).
Think the guy ur talking about from Western is Anthony Jones, and i agree he should be in the squad as he's been excellent this year and has done well in previous seasons with the Canty youth team. A few of the other shouts in this thread are also worth a call up but it'll probably be the usual suspects that make the team.
Skippy also coaches the Coastal 10th Grade Div 1 side
I mention this because it is always good to see 1st Team players helping with junior coaching.
Builds a stronger club etc...

Ironic that Nomads play Utd at home at Tulett Park next week after Utd were at home there today against Ferrymead Bays, some home ground advantage.
I should be at Coastal Idol but I'm attending a training camp for future All Whites in Papanui .

Interesting times in CHCH football. Nomads must surely be locked in for relegation now, and with Utd, Coastal, Western and Richmond last left in the Chatham Cup, it sure makes for and interesting draw this arvo. I am hoping for Coastal v Richmond and Utd v Western.
I hear Tech had James Price given straight red after about 20 mins, plus 3-4 other yellows in first half and Keith Braithwaite red carded after about 30 min. So western couldn't score vs 10 men for approx 100 minutes; got result in end tho.
Christchurch United v Dunedin Tech
Caversham v Western
Roslyn-Waikari v University
Richmond Athletic v Coastal Spirit
You got your wish Vim! The only all Mainland battle. Interesting that Southern teams were involved a round earlier this year, makes for a few good road trips.
So if all three Christchurch teams lose, then its a three-way tie for the Macfarlane Cup?centre_half2011-06-07 15:46:46

I should have been more specific in my wish and requested it be at home! Such a shame it is short notice too as flights and accom are hard to come by.
