Actually Bays took the lead after round 5 when they crushed United 9 - 0 with Halswel second and Suburbs third and have been on top since, some weeks leading on goal difference over Suburbs.

Thanks for clarifying that AW82, I only have access to the completed tables for each round from the Sporting Pulse website, which obviously has the deferred game results entered as though they were played at the right time. Ronaldoknow2011-06-13 21:30:05

That's  OK.

So will it be Bays claiming their third title or Suburbs a recond fourth. Bay's look to have settled again in recent weeks but have to visit Suburbs twice, including the  final day of the season would be great if that was the decider.

Bays may be in trouble if they lost either or Kamo, de Oliveria and MacIntyre at the same time as the have scored 32 of Bays 38 goals were Suburbs seem to be able to score from anywhere on the park.

Does anyone know if Kamo will be back from holiday for the next round?

Has he been on holiday? Oh well, at least he's out spending that $350 a week and $50 per goal salary.

Sorry, still grates on me.

This got me thinking the other day.....what would / could you do if you were a "wealthy" club and ambitious you obviously want to win so what can you do apart from pay or give perks to get the best players? A lot of people seem up in arms about bays having the $'s to pay for Kamo and the likes but if you can afford it why would you not do it? The can of worms has been opened!

But why pay anyone to play in the Mainland PFL as the standard is sh*te, hell out of 8 teams at the moment only 3 have a positive goal difference.

If I had the money I would rather use it to set up a travel fund for a South Island League, that way the standard is likely to be lifted, or maybe import a few decent refs

Will be great to see a different club in town this Saturday when Dunedin Tech take on United in the cup.

Look what happened to Richmond, sure the circumstances are a little different, but you can't build a sustainable club by throwing money at players that clearly won't be loyal if/when the money runs out!

Agreed AW82, why would you possibly want to put money into a defunct league, with no pay out in the end?

O yes Burnside were quite publicly poaching/paying players and look where they ended up. Good to see the FC Twenty11 club learning from those mistakes

On a non-football note, I hope everyone in Christchurch is safe and sound! Once again football takes a backseat to other more important things in life. Lets hope we can get things back to 'normal' as soon as possible and be playing again this weekend.

If the teams cant play/travel, lets hope there is a little more understanding from those provinces outside of chch than there has been in the past.

There won't be an issue with the Chatham Cup sides playing in and out of ChCh, but there might be a lack of grounds for all other grades though as liquefaction strikes again in the east. Welcome to life in Muntedville. What a nightmare, Quakes 4 ChCh 0 and no sign of full time yet.

Although the MPL is heating up and becoming exciting, I am itching for the next round of the cup this weekend. Three MPL sides in action in the Chatham Cup as well as a couple of English Cup rounds.

My week is boring and need some mid-week banter, what is expected for the weekend? Surely Richmond won't make it to the 4th round of the Cup?

Alot of the chat is that the otago sides will be too good for the canty teams this weekend. Is that a fair prediction according to you guys?

Dont know too much about these teams but have played in a few of the south island play offs and the dunedin teams were usually too strong in those games.

When you have a look at the current MPL table it highlights some of the problems ChCh teams face, half way through the league season and there is only a 7 point spread from top to 7th. Not so down South where a couple of sides (Cavvy, Dun Tech) tend to dominate. In Christchurch there is a far wider spread of quality players amongst the teams while down South they are concentrated in those top couple of teams. Look what happens when the NFC kicks in, Mainland on the whole put out a much more competitive side than Football South. Ironically the "success" of the Dunedin teams in things like the Chatham Cup and South Island play offs is masking a lot that is wrong with Otago football development. If it wasn't for the Uni lord knows how "good" those sides actually would be.

Very true! I don't know much about Southern football apart from the odd Chatham Cup or playoff match, but do Cavy and Tech pay their players?

It would be good to see an MPL team 'upset' a southern team, but the only way I see that happening is if United play their direct football and scrap out an ugly win.

The draw then goes national doesn't it?

Cavy has always payed their players but the money has dried up this year. I believe Dunedin Tech has a club policy to never pay players although everyone always seems to think they do?
I don't really see much point in paying players to play in an amatuer comp with no prize money even up for grabs, makes no sense whatsoever. The talent in Dunedin this year is much more evenly spread around cavy, Tech, Roslyn and Mosgiel. Why Mosgiel didn't enter the chatham cup is beyond me?
I also hear that Cavy and Tech will be below strength due to Uni exams this week and next.

Well Tech players don't get paid, can't speak for the others but doubt it.

Will be good to play against some new faces on Saturday, don't think the sides have clashed since the mid 90's (could be wrong) but we aren't looking into their league position too much.

As these are cup game anything can happen. As already stated about university exams up in ChCh Lincoln Univ have their exams this week and Canty Univ next week.

If the respective tables are any guide then Dunedin Tech likely to be too strong for ChCh United and the same for Cavy over Western as Western still have a few injuries in their squad, and I think the Richmond vs. Coastal game maybe to close to call.

Another factor could be the refs as plenty of yellow and red cards handed out, with some of the player's hard done by. Hate to be a train spotter but also heaps of pens awarded, 15 out of 174 goals (8.6%) by far the highest since the MPL started in 2002, again from what I have seen some of the spot kicks have been very soft, i.e. outside the area.

With it being a full national draw in the next round there could be a few treasurers not that unhappy if their team losses over the weekend as the next round is set down for July 2 - 3, so not enough time to apply for Gaming Trust Funding.

I was expecting most to be canned but no.

Colin Grant (Mainland operations manager?) sent out the snapshot for this weekend and all systems are go...at this stage.

CCC is checking their grounds and Eastern clubs esp have been asked to check their grounds and advise mainland if the grounds are usable.

Interesting article on Nelson Football possibly being entered into the national league. Have to say that would be brilliant for them, they have always produced good young  local players and this will be a great stepping stone for them. On a selfish note this will be a blow for Canterbury and maybe even Wellington as players which would have flocked to them will opt to saty at home. Does anyone know if this would happen this year or would this be a few years in the making?

National Draw not til 1/4 finals , next round will still be between Chch & Dun , this is accordding to NZ Football & Fed 7 ?? , so it will probably mean most games will be in Dunedin ( Sorry CHCH teams but you just cant cut it )

Oh ok, I stand corrected then. Seems strange they would change the rules. However this did happen last year too!

On another note, I see Mainland are advertising for yet another staff member, this time an Events and Marketing Officer. Have you seen how many people work in that office? Check out this page: https://www.mainlandfootball.co.nz/index.php?id=397

Sounds like Football South ,  7 staff there that do f#*k all for Football down here , last 4 years have averaged 300 K of funding for employees , In my veiw thats 300 k the clubs cant get their hands on to help expose kids to football ,

In my eyes all they do is put up costs to cover their expanding pay cheques , All of them are on over 50 k  and some are part time , this really grates me  !!!

That's interesting 'cos when Glading and Patel did there whirlwind "the state of the game" review tour of the provinces last year, when it came to the Chatham Cup clubs were overwhelmingly in support of the National Round coming in before the quarter finals. This was supposedly actioned by NZ Football this year so I am surprised it is no longer the case .
