I fully agree. It's got great football coverage, especially with the Phoenix. I was just a little disappointed this weekend.

They had an article on the back page. The small one above the ads. Saying that we were getting an arse whopping and that there were 20 mins to go. I was disappointed when they only had one of the little "some minor golfer hit a ball in a straight line" bits this week.
I suppose home games will get the best coverage by miles anyway...

Not true Marius. Article on page D6 by Mark Geenty, plus a small article by Terry Maddaford about new foreign talent in the NZFC.
Herald on Sunday - must have forgotten
The Herald on Sunday seems to have quietly forgotten football
this weekend.
I scoured some twenty-odd pages of sports news, but did
not find one single sentence mentioning the world's largest and
most popular sport - not forgetting the history created by the Nix
on Friday night. That is ridiculous. Nobody will convince me that
is a reasonable reflection of the readership market and audience
interest. That is all about editorial mentality and the journalist
pool. There has to be a market for one sentence on football in
Auckland's most widely circulated Sunday paper.
At the very least, football fans in Auckland should make sure
they buy the Sunday News or the Star Times. At least they they try
a wee bit. Even better, you might purchase a special subscription
to the Dom Post on Monday.
Then again, just come straight to the Yellow Fever
website.
Just got it - Disgraceful.

There was no mention of the Phoenix result in the Saturday
Herald and there was no mention of football whatsoever (Phoenix
result included) in the Sunday Herald.
Attrocious.
Think of your public "Herald On Sunday" just because the Knights
bombed, doesn't mean that Football isn't still alive a kicking in

The DomPost was also very bad. It had a little bit on Saturday (it
had more partway through the Central Coast game) and one article
today.
However, it did have a big picture and story on the Football Ferns and EPL.

Unfortunately the Friday night games in Oz that kick off at 10pm
NZT just can't make the deadline even for the Dom's latest edition,
otherwise we would've had it on Saturday.
Dom Post have generally been v good with Phoenix and football
more broadly. Fred W has been a champion and the sports editor has
generally given footy a good shot since Phoenix arrival in
particular.
However, they seem to have decided that away games finish too
late for their deadlines (did not cover the CCM game either on the
Saturday). My recollection (happy for somebody to correct me
if my memory is failing me) is that the newspaper is
happy to stay up for the Hurricanes when they play in
Australia - and that they really should be trying a bit harder
with the Nix. I think they could definitely do better.
But all this pales in comparison to the attitude of the
Herald. No contest

The Hurricanes very rarely play Friday night games in OZ
(usually Sat night). If they do, it's a 9.30 k/o NZT and can
squeeze in for latest addition.
The 10pm NZT k/o, and given A-League matches traditionally
start late and of course go for another 10 mins, just makes it a
logistical nightmare.
But, you make a reasonable point and I'll raise it and
see what can be done in future.

Thanks for the reply and explanation.
I didnt want the grizzle to detract from the great job the Dom
P has generally done re Phoenix and football. I dont know if the
Phoenix have any more evening friday matches in Australia this
year. Anything you can do to cover those matches in the saturday
paper would be much appreciated.
Back to my main point ...
The Herald on Sunday was appalling - and fully deserves to get
bagged.

Weren't those in Saturday's Sanday ?
Yes. Marius says in the fourth post in this thread,"There was no
mention of the Phoenix result in the Saturday Herald and there was
no mention of football whatsoever (Phoenix result included) in the
Sunday Herald." I can`t comment on what was in sundays paper as i
didn`t see it.
Well i apologise if i didnt spot the geenty article - i did go
through the saturday herald this morning. My mistake.
but the comments re herald on sunday stand.
As i don`t live in Wellington, what sort of coverage did the
Kingz/Knights get from the Dominion Post? As the Herald is
predominantly an Auckland paper maybe they are taking the attitude
as this is a Wellington team they will give it minimal coverage. I
would like the Herald to cover them more.
As long as the Post are right into covering the Phoenix that is the main thing.
As long as the Post are right into covering the Phoenix that is the main thing.
Knights/Kings got limited coverage in Wgtn. As far as the phoenix
are concerned i would expect much greater interest in wgtn and the
local papers to reflect that. But, I simply can't fathom how the
Herald on Sunday can not even mention football once in twenty pages
of sports news. Football is hardly a fringe sport in Auckland.
And, while i dont expect the Herald or the Press or the ODT to
give the Phoenix top billing by any means, there is no reason why
the Phoenix should get any less coverage in Auckland than the
Warriors do in Wgtn (and the Warriors get a fair nudge from the
Dom). After all, there must be as many soccer mums on the north
shore than league players in the whole country.
I think as football fans we are too conditioned to the status
quo to sometimes realise how ridiculous it is.
Maybe the poor performance of the football teams in Auckland has
scared the Herald away?
Interesting that those in the media who have made themselves known on this forum are the ones giving the best coverage. Dom Post and tv3. Maybe the others are looking but not making themselves known.
I remember before the rugby world cup started the Herald sport supplement had about 30 pages of rugby and three pages of other sport. Madness.
