How about this one then? It retains the southern cross, uses the red white and black for the maori influence and the koru

Tino Rangatirotanga has picked up a lot of negative associations, mainly related to gangs, which is a shame, because it's a strong flag.

The silver fern is good, but it's more a symbolf our sport than our country.

However if you like the fern, how about one that doesn't look like the AB's uniform:

Regardless, this won't come about until NZ is a republic. Currently we are still a dominion, like it or not. There are steps towards republicanism though - look at the high and supreme courts removing the link to the Privy council, and the removal of knighthoods, OBE's etc. Republicanism may sneak up on us by stealth. The one thing to consider is what we gain or lose by going down that road.

In terms of a flag it's about trying to establish some kind of national identity that hasn't been defined by someone else.

I don't look forward to that day. If we become a republic we will probably need to form a new treaty and it will have to adopt the same principles as the Treaty of Waitangi. There will be protests on both sides. At least by that time all compensation should be completed though.

Yes, needs to change.  NZ flag should be unique amongst the world's flags, instantly recognizable at a distance.  Current one doesn't meet any of those criteria.

Current flag is confusing and, therefore, misleading.  If someone came up with it as a design suggestion today, they would be an absolute laughing stock.  It fails the test of uniqueness.

Current flag says lots about where we came from (British colony), a little about where in the world we are (southern hemisphere - Southern Cross).

But it says not enough (in fact, previous little) about who we are, and where we are at today.

Current flag is about our past (that's not a bad thing, just not enough on its own), but it's not about us, and it's not about us today and in the future.

Needs to change.

It says more than just that - all the blue on the flag symbolises the sea. This is important on two levels: 1) we're an island nation, and 2) the country was settled by two of the greatest sea-faring peoples in human history (Polynesians and the British). These factors, along with the ones you've mentioned, have had an enormous impact on the way New Zealand has developed as a nation-state, and as such they're not only about our past (which is very important in its own right), but really about the process which has led this country to present day, and which is in fact still on-going, since we're still a Dominion and still have the monarch of the United Kingdom as our titular Head of State.
