Yeah you're probably right. Even a delayed game would be pretty sweet though. I'd also like to see a highlights show/ and or full games from the O League on TV too

A lot of league games are available on Youtube - I know all of Canterbury's home games are....

Having televised games is more about getting casual fans and other randoms to watch them though - youtube is really for the fans who will seek it out. If something's on tv then people will see that its on and check it out, and it will get played in sports bars etc, which should surely help raise the profile of the local game

Cost of televising a game in full (live or delayed) is approximately $40,000, if utilising an OB truck etc.  Therefore, for a 14 round season, + semis + final = approx $560,000

Cost of a half hour highlights show which would cover every game of every round etc = approx $130,000

Presumably Sky get funded to show the college netball and rugby.

interesting... $130,000 for all games in a round? That seems alright. I think that with sponsorship and a bit of support from NZF that could still be a profitable option for Sky. Although I say that without a shred of knowledge about the business models of pay tv networks... so I'm just guessing/hoping

that seems odd being as for highlights of all games, you would have to have camera(s) at all games. Whereas a live or even delayed full game, you would only need a camera etc at one game?

I assumed the extra cost would be in the live broadcasting equipment...

So an option would be to not have it live?

Too hell with SkyTV.
Look at streaming games LIVE online first.
If OFC can do it out of Taupo, surely games in ASBPrem can be.

Interesting to hear Nelson Bays Football regional development officer George Campbell slam Nelson's ASB Premiership bid suggesting the talent in the region is not strong enough. This coming from the one man who is paid to coach/create the talent in the region and has been doing so for X number of years.

Is he forgetting some of the players that have come out of Nelson because of no opportunities?

The whole reason they went behind NBF's back with the bid was because they are employed my Mainland Football who are obviously against the bid.

the 40K price per game is because when a game is covered in full, you have multiple cameras, a director, sound techos, commentators etc etc - it is a long technical process with a team of staff involved... an OB truck, where the feed is mixed and output from, is really expensive to use...

and fyi, the 130K for a highlights show is for the entire season, not just for one round... to film all four games in a round, edit them into a half hour show etc, costs 7-8K per show, depending on who you use to do it...

hope that helps

Does it annoy people that the NBL basketball final was live on SKY Sport tonight?

No. It annoys me that the ASBP final wasn't.

Hand on heart who would watch 2 hours of live ASBP football every week?  There is so much better football on TV it really suffers in comparison as a product.  I think highlights should be the limit of ambition at this stage.  Average football is still average football I'm afraid

How on earth could one match tv-production be so expensive?

Here in Croatia we have 4 games each weekend on TV, and our standard is miles under New Zealand's.

I guess the main issue is whether there is enough money in the game and interest from the general public and potential sponsors to make it justifiable/worthwhile.

Repeating myself from the TW thread, but if the point of finishing was a final was TV and media coverage which isn't going to happen now, is there any point in running this not as a proper league??

There was TV coverage of the ASB Premiership Final- it was arranged at the last minute.

I was out of town that weekend but saw the half hour highlights package of the final when I got back- I think on the Monday afterwards- on Sky Sport Highlights channel.

They have to start broadcast games first to see if it would be viable, like one game each matchday would be great - it seems like someone doesn't want to help to boost local football.

Also, more game in calendar is absolutely needed, if Fijians can play that much games, Tahitians, Caledonians, New Zealand can and must too. I was shocked few years ago when I saw there is just 14 games - I was convinced by default that there was 28 games..

I think you'd need more money from/for the competition before you can justify doubling travel costs though. I doubt having 14 more games would automatically do that. Youve got to put the horse before the cart else it'll all fall over.

Yeah, but football, local one - by local I mean on domestic, New Zealand football, should be there for much longer period that it is now. Game every two weeks (3-4 weeks between home games) is just too little to get league better.

It seems to me there is not so much interest from local companies nor local authorities in football, as I thought it would be after WC 2010 success.

I hear that it looks like the eight ASB Prem teams from the season just completed want to be back in action late this year so will there be an increase in numbers, if so likely to be a ten team league.

Still awaiting the make up of the league i.e. the current 8 team format, or increasing the number of teams or rounds

Wairarapa cant even field a Central League team with players from their provience. If you are going to have a team of imports base it somewhere thats easier to get to for travelling teams and where you are likely to get a decent crowd.

This is great but can we avoid BS rubbish like heartland etc?  They are a football club, that's all, not some representation of community spirit

Also, Nightz this has nothing to do with regions these are semi-pro football teams.  They are allowed, and should be encouraged to sign players from outside their region

i think it's up to them how they chose to appeal to their own market - if 'heartland' works for them and gets people to buy in then good on them

If Masterton can host a national league side then so can Nelson, New Plymouth and definitely a 3rd team in Auckland.

It's not about the size of the place, it's got to be about having a football infrastructure in place, including someone who is going to back the thing with cash.

agree, but it will become an issue of diluting the *talent*

at the moment the lack of $$$ means that some good players are not bothering

an extra couple of, well funded, teams would in theory increase the standard

too many extra teams would spread the talent too thin
