Travel around New Zeland
Hi
First of all I'm glad to see the Phoenix holding their
own this season and was stoked when you lot handed Sydneys arses to
them. This may be my first post here but I'm looking for some
advice if possible. I'm sure some of you supported the Knights.
Remember we gave them their first win in V1 :p
I'm planning a trip to NZ in November with a friend for about 12 days. The basic gyst is that we want to fly into Christchurch, go to Queenstown and do all the extreme stuff skydiving, bungee jumping, white water rafting etc. Then we'll probably head north again, definitely want to see Waitomo (caves and black water rafting) and I've been pointed towards the Bay of Islands and 'the hole in the rock' by friends. Then we'd fly home from Auckland.
I was going to hire a car but to be honest if there was good train transport I'd probably opt for that. I've found there is a line from Wellington to Auckland which is good. How long is this train? It seems to go past Waitomo, can one alight there?
Any recommendations about transport from Christchurch to Queenstown along how long it takes would be great. I want to put the skeleton of the trip together before I start looking at things like accomodation etc.
If there is nothing between Auckland and Paihia maybe I'd rent a car for a couple of days bring it back to Auckland, then fly out.
Thoughts?
Remember, I only have 12 days, but if you can think if anything I absolutely must squeeze in... let me know!
Cheers much appreciated,
Daniel

Rail would be brave.

Do the TranzAlpine if you get the chance, out of Christchurch but the others are kind of slow and don't exactly run to your schedule. Views are generally quaility though.

If nothing else comes up, the Naked Bus service is quite a good way
to get around and cheap too. I once got a return ticket Hamilton to
Whangarei and back for $24. To put that in perspective it normally
costs $80 driving or $100 by other bus services. Website is
www.nakedbus.co.nz from memory. Definitely head up to the
Winterless North mate...best part of the country!!!
Its pretty straight forward here theres
only two roads Highway 1 and 2 and half a railway line loads of
bush and mountains in the middle and its all surrounded by sea
!!
Thanks for the help so far fellas. I've travelled to alot of places
but despite NZ always having had been near top of the list it keeps
getting usurped. Can't wait to go, it looks a beautiful country.
I'll look into the buses.
This 'half a train line' This is on the north island right.
Does anyone know if there is an actual stop at Waitomo? Or
otherwise, the best means of getting there?
If ya book using naked bus in exactly the right time in advance (usually 28 days) you can score yourself $1.70 one way tickets.
its www.nakedbus.com not
.co.nz lol
As your time is short, if you can afford it rent a car. You can
drop it off in Picton and pick another up in Wellington. The extra
expense is well worth it. Spent three months driving around N.Z. a
few years back.
The train doesn't stop at Waitomo. But you could stop at Hamilton
and get a connecting bus perhaps?
The train leaves Wellington around 7am every day, and arrives in Auckland around 8pm.
Quite a slow journey but great scenery.
