Good match for the Phoenix
Wellington conceded three corners in the first two
minutes then the Mariners (via Wilkinson) scored off the fourth
corner. Phoenix then settled down and Royce Brownlie had two
good chances which forced Mariners GK Danny Vukovic into some good
saves and Jeremy Christie then sent a header straight at Vukovic
after he was found unmarked on the back post after half and
hour.Adam Kwasnik, who doesnt actually look like he should be a pro
footballer, then ghosted in to nail home a pass and send the
mariners 2 nil up. Nick Mrdja for the mariners then sent a
free kick into the wall after an unlucky handball was called
against phoenix late on in the half. The Mariners then laid
seige to the Wellington goal and 10 mins into the second stanza the
Phoenix's Steven D'or was sent off for a second bookable offence
after brining down Sasha Patrovski, Mrdja did better this time with
the free kick but Glen Moss handled it well despite a deflection.
The Phoenix created some chances late on and the injection of
Felipe Campos after the sending off helped complement the already
good work that was going on for a new team.
Once the players get combinations sorted and the language
barrier is broken down a bit more with some of the Brazilian
players then they will certainly be ready to go come the season
proper
