Hello there,
In recent weeks I have been creating a website archive for Sitter, New Zealand’s first national football (soccer) fanzine, which was founded from humble beginnings in May 1995 under the editorship of Derek Walker - better known as The Jam around these parts - until its final issue (No 62) in January 2005.
Many of you people here will not be familiar with Sitter (For grammatical ease the traditional exclamation mark accompanying the title has been left off here) but it was something of a literary landmark in New Zealand football.
Sitter agitated, informed and entertained with dodgy humour, incisive analysis, and forthright (and occasionally defamatory) opinion, having been born in an era when the internet was in its infancy in New Zealand. As the Sitter blurb used to say, it was “for serious fans, not puddings and toss pots”.
To date this website displays the covers (which can be enlarged) of all 62 issues, has a complete PDF of one or two issues, and links to specific articles in a number of issues, particularly the more recent ones.
Unfortunately digital versions of many of the Sitter originals (articles and photos) have been lost somewhere in the mists of time, but old steam-driven hard drives are being scoured. The intention is to get as many as possible of the feature articles digitally archived here.
Meanwhile for those seeking a hard copy, a lot of these Sitter editions can still be purchased at their original cover price of $3 - rarer ones where there are just a couple left are priced up to $10 - until stocks run out.
The website is still a work in progress and nowhere near complete. This is just to advise people that it now exists.
