They shouldn't have a Coup then.

Though it mainly effects fans etc hopefully the Military leader would take notice, and Fifa should really Disqualify Fiji or make them play without the keeper.

Hence punishing Fiji.

And yes the Fans would be 'punished' but still, Coup's are bad. And Fifa is spose to be about piece.

No Michael you've got it wrong. It's not the Fiji soccer teams fault.

What punishment do you think we should all have because of Doug Howlett's dumb actions???

A similar question.

Not really. One case is the actions of an individual and dumb rugby player, the other has to do with illegal change of a state's constituional arrangements and suspension of democracy that won universal condemnation from the rest of the world. Slight difference there.

Wrong. The history of sport is littered with teams rightly being excluded from international competition for political reasons. The banning of South Africa from international sporting events for about 30 years is an excellent example of this, and there are many more. Just last year, the Government did not allow the Zimbabwean cricket team to tour New Zealand.

A footballing example would be the banning of ex-Yugoslavia from EURO 92 although they had qualifed, because of the Serbian role in the wars in Croatia and Bosnia. This, conicidentally, allowed Denmark to win that particular Championship, although they had not in fact qualified for it, coming in second behind Yugoslavia in the qualifying group.

FIFA are the innocent party here, as you say FIFA promote peace, equality, and are very much against racisim etc.

What I fail to understand here is:

i. Where is the NZ Sports minister
ii. How is it that the Rugby sevens side is allowed entry into NZ - should be very interesting next year [being election year] what happens in Feb 2008 and the rugby sevens!

With regard to the Fiji sevens in Wellington this year - they were allowed to come and compete under the same exception as the Fiji football team was minus the goalkeeper. However, they were not allowed to participate in the parade and the official ceremony preceding that.

Someone mentioned he is on bereavement leave following the death of his father.

Hi Hard News - I presume that the Sports Minister's office can operate without him or is the dept completely inept. $50 million on the AB's or should that be AC's [All Chokes], $34 million on the America's cup and b..... all on FOOTBALL.  Once again the NZ government uses sport as a tool to stand on 'principle'. It dosen't matter who is in power, the politicos are all the same
We are the laughing stock of the sporting world, particularly given the state of our inability to accept defeat. NZ was just getting over this loss [last Sunday] and with Howlett etc, the sports minister's office should take a stand- even for the supporters of sport in general - absolutely pathetic. All the wrong messages are being sent to our youth.

Hi El Q - I fail to see how a "potential" son in law to a military officer, even if it is Barmy Barny himself, should impact on our Nation. Words leave me for dead, apart from sour grapes and hidden agendas!
