Was the Fiji move correct?
Jessie Owens showed in 1936 that sport and politics didn't mix by winning gold.
1972 and Terrorists took the lives of some Isrealies in an
attempt to make a political point.
1975 - 1990 something, SA were in the sporting wilderness
until their were changes.
The Russian Olympics and the boycott, what did it prove?
Personally I see no place for sport in politics. It's an old
cliche but why punish sports teams because of what politicians
& their egos tell us what's morally right or wrong? Peters has
cocked up, or should I suggest, someone in his department has
and he's taking the heat. Mallard - the Minister of everything, is
strangely quiet - mind you, in fairness he's been VERY quiet since
the MP's Rugby Trip to France hit the news. It never should have
but the politicians wanted to score some very cheap shots at damien
o'Connors expense. The Ab's loss has also kept Mallard very
quiet. normally he'd be crowing about now and conveniently showing
up in France on "Official" Government business had the AB's carried
on winning.
Sp[eaking of France, are they now our friends? Ranbow Warrior
& all? I wonder what the green party view is? And the USA were
also there, but hey, what about our Nuclear free policey? Should we
be at tournaments where these two countries are participating?
Speaking of Nuclear Free - pull your heads out of the sand, Nuclear
free? NZ is NOT Nuclear Free. There are at least 6 small Nuclear
reactors within our country, two in the Wellington Region alone. So
let's get real and welcome the US back - and their dosh of
course!
So I feel for this Fijian player who has been singled out. A
scape goat, because if our Government were being serious, we'd have
nothing to do with most of the countries in the world, including
China - human right - yeah right, The USA - their middle eastern
policies, Fiji? They are no threat to this country surely.
I feel sorry for the NZFA whom have gone to the effort of
having the game in Auckland and actively advertsied it for a decent
crowd.
I feel for Ricki Herbert and the squad for being dragged into
the political arena when all they want to do is get to the World
Cup Finals in South Africa.
I feel for those Fijian fans whom may have made the ffort to
support their country's football team.
The Government has scored the NZFA a big black eye and
embarrassment in the Football world. $200,000 in losses? I'd say a
lot more than that but then, the All Whites and associated parties
are losers all because of one little beaurocrat. Oddly enough I can
think of another "little corporal" whom wanted to make a big name
for himself too.
But of course Auntie Helen's seat as the United Nations Chair
Person has been looking shakey of late, maybe that's why she has
been quiet on this issue as well.
sports and politics dont mix and this govt shows this real good
stuff u winston
