Getting told by your employer that you won't be offered a new contract, on the last day of your existing contract.

Thats harsh. End of financial year?

Bit of context - I was on a fixed term contract to complete a 3 month internship, and when the internship finished they offered me an extension to the term, and we've been extending it by 3 to 6 months at a time for the past 2 years. This time around though, they chose to not offer me another extension, completely out of the blue. It's legal.

That would piss me off as well.

Actually...if you had a reasonable expectation that they renew it, you may have a case. Or you could actually prove that you were actually a fulltime employee, there are criteria where it has been determined contract workers are actually fulltime workers in court. Very vague memories from commercial law paper I did years ago. 

Yeah, I was told by a union delegate at work that if my fixed term contract was renewed more than twice that technically my employer would have to make it a permanent contract. Dunno if that's a universal thing or an existing part of our collective agreement or something though

It's probably worth getting it checked out - that's if you want to still want to work there. 

When you get older you realize that there are very few companies that give a fuck these days about their employees despite the rhetoric. That's why I could never work in  H&R - I wouldn't be able to sleep at nights.

I agree with the others, get this looked into Patrick. I think there are grounds. 

The scheme that fucked me off was from National where you can get a 90 trial in a job and then your employer can let you go if they want to. 

I am sure there are firms out there that would check this out for you at no cost if you lost. I see that ad on TV for the guy that gets sacked for wearing a Simpsons tie.

Yeah, it's just an ad, not real but the company very much is real. If you win, they want payment, if you lose you pay them nothing.

There is a community law office on Willis street who provide free legal advice. Pretty sure if it goes past one year, you are considered an employee.

While all true regarding being deemed an employee etc, and it sure sucks to be let go with no notice, Personally I would tell the pricks to get stuffed (in the nicest  possible way without burning bridges as you never know when you need a reference!), back myself to pick something else up and move on. Sound like not the sort of place you would want to work anyway.

Ads on Sky for some show on Food TV about FOOD TRUCKS where they give teams of people a FOOD TRUCK each and they have to run the best FOOD TRUCK for their chance to win their own FOOD TRUCK.

Taco trucks are one the best American things.

I don't have Sky but there used to be a show on TV1 that had a FOOD TRUCK.  This chef called Michael used to go around to various fairs/events in his FOOD TRUCK and try out new recipes.

I think it was called FOOD TRUCK.

I always preferred TROOD FUCK - a show where different contestants had to try to cop off with Sting's wife.

American Food does set a pretty low standard to better though!

The prick on my floor at work, whose arse hole does not seem to point down like everyone elses and has trouble shitting into the middle of the loo and is to fucking ignorant to clean up his own mess afterwards.

We've had a couple of folk like this, basically during a team meeting about house keeping I bought it up and it usually resolved the issue. Do you actually know who it is?

You can see why TROOD TRUCK never really made it off the ground and FOOD TRUCK did. Rarely have I seen a couple that needs a good slapping more than Sting and his missus.

Problem is it is a multi tenancy floor with 8 other organisations.  I will actually do a letter or something today I think.

That's what made me chuckle about yout post as I remember first seeing the advert and remarked to the wife "How many times are the going to say f*cking FOOD TRUCK?"
