Pretty average dutch team imo. Dont think they will make it out of their group.

It will probably come down to the game against Chile, looking forward to that match. Chile's backline is pretty weak, I would back the likes of Sneijder and van Persie to put enough past them.

I reckon they might surprise Spain in the first match and score a win. Won't get much further in knock out stage though

From what I understand, Chile are still playing the fairly narrow, three-at-the-back system that Bielsa had them playing which could be stretched and forced back by a typical Dutch 4-3-3. However, it is a side in transition and if the older players are too past it or the kids don't step up then they could lose to both Spain and Chile.

Rafael van der Vaart out of the world cup with a calf injury. Big blow for the Dutch? Does this greatly affect their formation/tactics?

No worry to the Dutch - hasn't featured for them at all the last six months and in only six games last year.

Last played for the Netherlands in a friendly Nov. 19 last year vs. Colombia and was subbed at half time. Has missed both friendlies since then vs. France and Ecuador. Of Holland's 14 games last year and this year, only played in six games:

vs. Colombia, the friendly game vs. Japan on Nov. 16, (unused sub in Holland's last World Cup qualifier vs. Turkey October 15), full game vs. Hungary October 11, but otherwise played in only the August friendly vs. Portugal and the March World Cup qualifiers vs. Estonia and Romania.

The loss of Kevin Strootman, AS Roma's 24 year-old midfield general, is probably more significant. Also out injured and rumoured to be a target of Man Utd.

Ghana looked atrocious imo (only watched the first half). Dutch looked good going forward and were never tested defensively.

Was similar in second half, but a lot of mistakes in the attacking third meant chances to make it a bigger win were left on the park.

I reckon van Gaal thinks hitting Chile and Spain on the break is the way to go, given how quickly they got the ball forward. The shape is similar to that used by Celtic when they stifled (and beat) Barca a year and a half ago, and given that Torres was the 'big man' in Spain's game yesterday, I think it would be a decent way to go about things. That front three with Snjeider as the 10 and Robben and van Persie as inside forwards looks exciting and should stretch better defenses than Ghana, but sometimes during slow build-ups a big gap built up between them and the midfield.

Holland's chances of progressing from their group:

Some interesting stats which I worked out by analyzing the World Cup Finals history of the Netherlands and Chile:

(Re-posting from the Group B Thread - "B" for "Beautiful Football" of course !!!)

Hard to pick between Chile and the Netherlands but I'm going with the Netherlands (I'm half Dutch).

(1) The Netherlands have never failed to progress from the group stage since 1974 when they first entered a professional side in the Finals (Holland's only two previous appearances in the Finals were in 1934 and 1938, fielding only amateurs, when entry was by invitation and teams only played one first round game, the winner making the quarter-finals). Of course, they never made the Finals in 1982, 1986 and 2002.

Amazing to think the Netherlands only have forty years of post-war World Cup Finals history - much less than most other major countries.

Dutch clubs were weak before the 1960's and the national team only allowed professionals from 1956 when Holland's first pro league was formed.

(2) The Netherlands have appeared in the Finals only seven times since World War Two but have made the Final three times.

(3) By contrast, Chile have only made it past the group stage three times in eight World Cup Finals appearances...

(4) Chile's best performances have been a third-place when they hosted the Finals in 1962 and two Round of Sixteens.

Stats don't always predict current performance - but I'm hoping so !!!

HOLLAND AND BRAZIL - A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

Several of the Dutch side are close to being of Brazilian ancestry, being of Surinamese ancestry - either born or growing up in Suriname, the former Dutch colony on Brazil's northern border.

In the current squad, Nigel de Jong, Michel Vorm, Georginio Wijnaldum and Jeremain Lens are of Surinamese descent.

(Against Spain, de Jong started and Wijnaldum and Lens came on as subs; Vorm the second-choice keeper)

Five others are of Caribbean or African descent.

Jeremain Lens, the Dynamo Kiev striker's uncle is Sigi Lens, a former professional footballer who was one of the 11 survivors of the tragic plane crash in Surinam in 1989 that killed 176 people, among them a group of Dutch football players of Surinamese descent who were travelling for a friendly match. Sigi Lens couldn't play football again after the disaster because of hip problems caused by his injuries...but became one of Holland's leading players' agents, including handling most of the major Dutch Surinamese stars.

328,300 Surinamese people live in the Netherlands, compared to 438,000 Surinamese in Suriname itself.

Dutch is the official language of Suriname. Only became independent in 1975.

The Dutch swapped New York for Suriname in 1674 with England - thus ensuring football rather than economic benefits!

Dutch football greats of Surinamese descent include Gullit, Rijkaard, Kluivert (current assistant to van Gaal), Seedorf, Davids, Winter, Hasselbaink, Vanenburg, Bogarde and Babel.

About 30 players of Surinamese descent have played for Holland. Frank Rijkaard has managed Holland.

In 1991 a Suriname XI featuring Gullit, Rijkaard, Bogarde etc. beat Holland 3-1 in an unofficial international.

Much interesting info about Suriname and it's impact on Dutch football:

"HOW HOLLAND BECAME THE BRAZIL OF EUROPEAN FOOTBALL"

http://sabotagetimes.com/reportage/how-holland-bec...

"It’s five times bigger than the Netherlands, has a population of half a million and its main exports are bauxite, bananas and footballers..."

The famed tolerance and open mindedness of Dutch society has also contributed to the Surinamese having a bigger impact on Dutch football than the relatively minor impact of players from former British colonies in the Caribbean have had on British football....

Edgar Davids has a theory. ‘Surinam has many similarities to Brazil,’ says the Juventus midfielder who was born in Coronie, 130 miles west of Paramaribo [capital of Suriname]. ‘There’s a lot of poverty and a lot of kids on the street who have no money, come from broken homes and have plenty of time on their hands. They play football all the time and they learn to play with their bare feet.’

http://makingplansfornigel.wordpress.com/2012/05/2...

Hypothetically, a Suriname national team (composed of Dutch Surinamese) would have been dynamite at World Cup 1998.

Three of the starters and four on the bench for Holland v Brazil in the 1998 semi were of Surinamese ancestry.

After this morning's game against Brazil, it's interesting to look at how the Dutch went:

- they scored and won when coming from behind - Spain, Australia, and Mexico

- they scored and won when it was not do-or-die - Chile, and Brazil

- but failed to score at all when it was - Costa Rica, and Argentina

It seems they needed to go a goal down, or be playing a game they were less concerned about, before they could give themselves licence to play less conservatively and really go at the opposition. Perhaps if they'd conceded an early goal to Argentina they might have ultimately won that semi!
