Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal says two of his players refused to take the first penalty in their World Cup semi-final shootout defeat by Argentina.

Defender Ron Vlaar stepped up but Sergio Romero saved his kick. Argentina went on to win the shootout 4-2 and will face Germany in Sunday's final.

"I asked two players to take the first ball before ending up with Vlaar," said new Manchester United boss Van Gaal.

What an absolute trainwreck if this is true.

You'd think that any world class team would have a clear, definite pre-determined strategy and lineup for a shootout. Failing that, you'd think the coach would have the spine to tell players the lineup, not ask them.

Surely it says a lot about the culture of the team when nobody wants to step up when it matters, including the coach. What an embarrassment.

Nope, not always the case. Sometimes players pre-designated to take a penalty are not in the right frame of mind given the occasion or physically not 100% after extra time. I'm sure similar discussions would have been held by the Argentinians.

Not much point having pre determined lineup for shootout. What if two of the players are injured and subbed. Maybe a couple of the guys are having a nightmare. Usually works best  if players are confident.

It has happened before and will happen again. Coaches will have worked out their preferred pen takers and then at the time will ask to make sure they are in the right frame of mind and body to take one. At the other end of the scale Baggio wasn't fully fit when he took his penalty against Brazil and missed, many questioned whether he should have taken one.

In that case I bow to your supeior knowledge as I couldn't hit a barn door from two feet.

I literally tried to hit a barn door from two feet one time, just for a confidence booster. Still missed the target. To be honest it haunts me to this day and maybe I'm still looking for someone to blame. Thought I had a scapegoat in van gaal, but apparently not.

Ramble over. As you were.

Interesting discussion this (and it reads better for Van Gaal when you see the actual text - he felt Vlaar would have confidence so good on him for being honest on making that call).  However, I would have thought Huntelaar would have been one of the penalty takers - fresh and a penalty expert.

Not the best strategy, in my book, to have your best waiting at #5 (assuming that was the case).

Edit: re discussion on Van Gaal picking Vlaar as #1.  Couldn't be arsed including the whole thread.

Seeing as you're being pedantic, i meant during the game. Not the shootout following the game.

I saw Messi was the fist name on the sheet for the Argentinian penalty takers.  Stood up and slammed it in, thereby freaking out the Dutch...

I don't know what happened to the Dutch.  Robben should have said F this and  taken the 1st penalty....

Sorry, I forgot this was serious business.

According to our Zürich overlords, he only had one save to make during the gamehttp://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=255955/match=300186490/statistics.html#nosticky

In Linux, Ctrl-Shift-U to enter unicode mode and then type in the unicode value for it (00fc) and press enter.

For Windows, try one of the methods given at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9C#Keyboarding

Wow. If the ball didn't touch Vlaar's should it may just have rolled in; from one angle it looks bloody close to going over.

Certainly touched it. Totally hypothetical if it would have crossed if he hadn't, though I like to imagine he didn't touch it and the ball crossed while the 'keeper is off celebrating.

Unfortunately RVP had a stomach bug in the days before the game and was touch-and-go to play. Van Gaal said after the game, he had to take him off because he was not in a good state by then.

Such a close contest and whoever lost would have been unlucky.

Van Gaal has been disparaging about the value of the 3rd/ 4th play-off, while Big Phil has been talking it up as a way to regain lost pride.

Just hope the Dutch don't take it too lightly and end up losing by a big margin....
