Attendances across the ASBP have fallen since year one. Its not just a wellington trend.
The very fact that you have asked that question renders any explanation and further discussion pointless! You clearly refuse to see that just possibly for all the positives of having Phoenix in A-League there maybe be the odd negative.
Even if you accept the notion that there is some drag on Team Wellington crowds that is caused by the Phoenix, how big do you really think that drag is?
Even if removing the Wellington Phoenix caused a 100% upswing in TW attendances, you're still talking three figure gates. It's hardly transformative.
But there is zero evidence to suggest that the Phoenix reduce Team Wellington crowds. I don't think you could even find anyone at Team Wellington who would say that they'd be better off if there was no NZ A-League team.

I really haven't got time to contribute to this discussion at the moment (and everyone in Auckland knows I'm just being a cunt anyway) but here's a reminder that this is roughly how the ASBP is currently funded:
As soon as you start talking about having an officially semi-pro league (as opposed to the current 'hear no evil' model) then you have to take nearly $2m dollars in revenue out of the picture.
So that's your start point - you're currently spending $3m but only have $1m in non-pokie revenue (and half of that is dependent on getting to the CWC). So how do you make up the difference?
