I guess we could have done the same if NZ football had a spare million dollars.

Don't think the Ffa have a spare million either.

Being sponsored by Qantas might have helped.

I do not see peru as being that much stronger than those teams specially without guerrero.

spot on there mate. This team was able to lose to teams worse than Peru, and now we drew with Peru. Big step backwards.

Peru with guerrero may be on par with the likes of mexico , japan and russia

Peru without Guerero is not.

Its not even about winning or losing. My point is I do not think we played great yesterday and I don't think a draw was a good result for us

But if we make it to the world cup , I m just not as optimistic as others. Playing like that usually is a recipe for disaster

Im hopeful coach makes some changes , Get Wood in from the start and asks the mids or defense to get a clean ball to him. I m hopeful we do not get to see this kicking a long ball anywhere on the opposite side everytime we get the ball BS.  Lets give the peruvian defenders some work.

Stop pretending like you know anything about Peru. You're like Craig Bellamy pre-match for BeIN - no fudgeing clue.

Apparently the pitch in Lima is quite a bit wider than the Westpac stadium pitch.

May be harder to limit their wingers space in the next game. We're going to have to defend our asses off (and still score)

They feel Peru did not play with enough urgency...took too long transitioning into attack and allowed nz to regroup with numbers. essentially never got out of second gear

They tried to show patience but ended up being to patient on the ball..almost expecting a goal to happen without having to do much

Basically sums up your post. If you can't remember key parts of the game, why even bother composing a huge rant? Most of your observations are so wrong I'm not even sure you watched any more than the Peruvian media's highlights.

yeah there was quite a bit of talk in peru media that the width of the pitch helped nz defensively. Not sure how much wider lima is but could mean a harder day at the office for the wide defenders

How much wider is the Lima pitch? The Cake Tin strikes me as a fairly large football field.

Aren't there rules around max pitch sides etc... I thought at International level these were pretty standardised to stop pitch doctoring as it were - direct nations shortening the pitch etc.

Length: minimum 100 m (110 yds)

maximum 110 m (120 yds)

Width: minimum 64 m (70 yds)

maximum 75 m (80 yds)

From FIFA laws of the game.

And according to Wikipedia:

The Peru national stadium in Lima is 104.9m x 67.86 so doesn't seem outrageously large.

to me Peru biggest mistake was having no urgency in attack they seemed to take their sweet time getting attacks started much to Farfan annoyance. He was making runs that required a through ball but the mids never tried to filter those passes through

They played Farfan like he was Guerrero and he requires a different passes

also they highlighted GK, Reid and Thomas as key kiwi players and feel Hudson won the tactical battle

Alberto Rodriguez was essentially only player that escaped criticism and The goalie but he did not have much to do. Ramos the other cb got an ok mark

it's mostly criticizing  the team confussing passivness with patience. They expect the same deep defensive set up by NZ in Lima with usual long balls and hoping to bury one at least one

the negative press is always present and has been for the whole process so in that sense they are used to it

    I was at the game:

    1. We were not outclassed.

    2. 0-0 was a fair result.

    3. We have a very real chance to win in Lima.

    4. I would of preferred a taller striker to start but can understand Hudson starting Rojas and Kosta because he really knows what they can do and are capable of whereas he has limited [and in Brockie's case - nil] with Brockie, Fallon and Smeltz.

    5. Crowd participation by both sides was great and loud.

    6. My only negative comment to make is that we are a lot slower than the likes of Peru to launch attacks, they just seem to flick a switch and its on.

    7. Made the cooment to my mmate as we were leaving - we need to be playing against this standard of opposition more often in this Country, we will draw the crowds and we are capable of grabbing some results against these top tier nations.

Peru's home games have produced 2 losses 3 draws and 4 wins

    lost to Chile 4 3

    beat Paraguay 1 0

    drew with Venezuela 2 2

    beat Ecuador 2 1

    drew with Argentina 2 2

    lost to Brazil 2 0

    beat Uruguay 2 1

    beat Bolivia 2 1

    drew with Colombia 1 1

so they have conceded in 8 out of 9 games

side note the draw with nz has stretched Peru's current unbeaten run to 9 games (all in 2017)

I haven't read all of this thread so I'm sure I'm repeating much of what has been said.

Awful first 15 minutes, apart from that we looked fine and Peru didn't create much.  We looked dangerous up front after Wood came on and this has me pumped for the second leg.  Early shambles in defence but Marinovic did bloody well to get back and clear off the line.

Last 10 mins with a few great chances the tin was rocking and we could have snuck a 1 nil win.  Thomas's one that shaved the post!  Damn that was a close one.

Nil all is a great result and I'm hoping the boys get confidence from this that we are competitive.  First 20 in Peru is huge, stay in it and as the game goes on they'll be getting nervous.  The pressure is all on them.  Half day on Thursday for sure.

Just for the record, I owe AH an apology - as unhappy as I was about keeping Wood on the bench, the team functioned well (well enough at least) without him. Agree that we looked more threatening once he came on, but if he wasn't 100% recovered, then resting him for the crucial return leg was a smart idea.

Also want to say how amazing Saturday was - coming from Italy, I'm used to big games and tense atmospheres and I felt we gave Europeans and South Americans a run for their money on the weekend.

On a side note, if we don't qualify, I'm going to have recurring dreams of that Ryan Thomas shot for many many years!

Can I just say, this was amazing! Never heard our national anthem sung so loud, was a great call by Shane and NZ Football to not having a vocalist lead it and to have the words on the big screens.

Always thought FIFA regulations meant that it had to be played via CD, and had to be just music. And 90s max

FIFA just do recorded music not words..so words on screen was good idea.  Was never going to be a singer like ABs.
